Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is in Davos ahead of President Trump’s visit on Wednesday and Thursday. Secretary Bessent was asked by the assembled media about current administration policy toward Greenland. WATCH:
What most people don’t understand about the strategically worded letter to Norway’s leftist Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, is how President Trump has just framed Støre as the defacto head of Brussels, representing the interests of the EU toward the framework of Greenland.
It’s not about the Nobel Peace Prize; it’s something far bigger. President Trump did not initiate contact with PM Støre; the contact was first made by Støre calling President Trump to notify him that their position was to defend Greenland against any threat from a non-NATO nation. President Trump asked how Norway was going to secure that pledge and Støre had no response.
Trump is correct; we cannot abdicate our own security to the promises of other nations. This perspective not only applies toward the USA but also applies toward the EU and is the entire reason why Trump has told NATO they need to be able to defend themselves.
Norway said it cannot defend itself from Russian threats and needs the security of the U.S. Accepting this statement Trump rightly asks: if you cannot defend yourself then how can you possibly defend Greenland. Støre had no reply. President Trump is unwilling to accept platitudes and statements in lieu of structural reality.
Prime Minister Støre previously said, “Norway’s position is firm: Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Norway fully supports the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. There is broad agreement in NATO on the need to strengthen security in the Arctic, including in Greenland.”
In context President Trump’s position makes a great deal of pragmatic sense.
President Trump will not abdicate vital USA strategic security on the hope that NATO will defend our interests if needed. In fact, the quagmire and inability of Europe to defend a European country like Ukraine proves the pragmatic point. If Europe cannot organize strategic defense of Ukraine, then why the heck would Trump believe Europe would organize the strategic defense of Greenland.
Denmark cannot protect itself from China and/or Russia. Why would the United States believe Denmark could protect Greenland?

The U.S./Denmark issue around Greenland is between two NATO countries. It serves no purpose for other NATO members to intervene other than to fracture the NATO alliance. And then what do they do when big trouble comes? Støre has answered.

Denmark holds sovereignty over Greenland, so that would trigger NATO’s Article 5.
The U.S. would immediately move to cut the supply lines from the home country of the invasion to its expeditionary force, leaving it isolated.
Whatever equipment the invaders had managed to get ashore would be bombed by the USAF into smithereens, and the invading personnel would likewise be attacked.
I cannot for the life of me see why anyone takes the possibility of China or Russia invading Greenland seriously.

It is all but impossible for Ukraine to cut the supply lines connecting Russia to its forces in Ukraine.
OTOH, if Russia invaded Greenland,
it would be duck soup for the U.S. Navy and Air Force to cut (i.e. interdict) the supply lines connecting Russia to its expeditionary force in Greenland.
To compare the Russia/Ukraine situation to a hypothetical Russia/Greenland situation is just plain stupid.

I think the entirety of what was once considered Western civilization in Europe is too weak to defend themselves from Russia.
Did Denmark capitulate to Germany in approximately six hours? What makes any rational life form believe that Denmark can protect Greenland againt China or Russia? Is the USA to be bear all expenses to protect these NATO countries from threats?

Once again EU and other countries there are broke, dead broke, they cannot afford anything to oppose Trump, the only countries not broke is Hungary, Slovakia and Czech because they refused to fund Ukraine. Ukraine is where EU and non Eu countries send the money they are stealing from the own countries and splitting it with Zelensky and his gang if thugs.
Interesting note … the much advertised “deployment” of German, UK, French and Danish Troops amounted to being nothing more than a “training exercise” …. sending fewer than 250 TOTAL personnel to Greenland ON CIVILIAN Airliners. By the way, those contingents have already departed for their home bases.
The current Danish Forces on Greenland consist of a Command-Logistics-Training Unit, a few local volunteer Home Guard militia squads and few fisheries patrol vessels.

French Guiana (France)
Bermuda (Great Britain)
These are just three examples. There are more. Granted these places are tiny compared to Greenland, which is mostly empty, but would their mother countries defend them?
Guadeloupe and Martinique, also French. Curacao is Netherlands, too. And no, thy’d demand we do it.

On a tangent: I’ve been to Curaçao (Netherlands) which is an awesome island super close to Venezuela!! The island is big enough, and sparse in spots for a very large US military base that could control the entire South Caribbean and the North of South America.
