There is a solution which preserves free speech and keeps the government out of the mix:
Repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, for all web sites (misunderstood as ‘platforms’). That means they are really publishers with editorial control, and are liable for what they post on their sites, and can be sued, like any private entity, just as newspapers and magazines have always been.
Been the problem from day one. No accountability.
The fb, googles & such have an army of lawyers on staff. Anyone that’s going to sue them doesn’t nor do they have the means to pay for them.
Keep section 230 for those who don’t censor or employ secret algorithms to do it. If they censor, they’re a publisher. If they don’t, they’re a platform.
Censorship is a government activity. Editorial judgment is not censorship. If a web publisher doesn’t publish your comments, go to a different one.
The problem we had during the scamdemic was the Biden regime using the web publishers as tools of government censorship. When you study tyranny and totalitarian states – how the seeds were sown and watered – you often find yourself thinking “Surely they’re not just going to say the same things and go through the same motions again.” But they do! And it works! When the people abandon God and become lazy and blindly jealous and selfish, you find almost every path other than the one that leads to a healthy and self-regulated society will be taken by the mob.
“We need to limit your rights so we can protect them!” As soon as you accept that, they take the next step to “protect” your rights, and before long you have a steamroller doing laps on your back. So many examples: the Soviet constitution guaranteed a litany of “rights,” but all with a proviso that basically cancels them the moment they conflict with “the interests of the state.” And your could add Nazi Germany, Communist China, DPRK, and so on. In the end, your wealth is gone, your means of protecting yourself and overthrowing the tyranny are gone, and you don’t even remember what free speech was like because every word you speak in public is carefully (but not always successfully) self-censored.
I always wonder if these proto-tyrants are so stupid they actually believe everything they say, or if they know exactly what’s behind what they say and think we’re that stupid.
