(NEW YORK TIMES) – The software giant Oracle will oversee the security of Americans’ data and monitor changes and updates to TikTok’s powerful recommendation technology under a new deal to avert a ban of the service, according to a senior White House official.
A copy of the algorithm, the recommendation engine that powers the app’s addictive feed of short videos, will be licensed from China to an American investor group that will oversee the app in the United States, the official said.
Oracle will also invest in the new American TikTok, as will the private equity firm Silver Lake, another senior official said.
It will be “secured” in the United States outside the control of TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, one of the officials said. The U.S.-run TikTok will work to retrain the copy on users’ data in the United States, and China will not have access to the data, the officials added.
The deal is an effort to meet the requirements of a law that would have banned TikTok in the United States unless ByteDance relinquished control of the app. It was intended to address national security concerns that the app’s ownership could give Beijing a channel to spread propaganda or to collect sensitive data about Americans.

The exact mix of investors has been in flux. Mr. Trump hinted this weekend that the media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his son Lachlan were considering an investment, which could come through the media giant Fox Corporation, a person familiar with the talks said.

Combine that with Google slurping up all your Internet data, and the banks voluntarily handing over your banking data to the Feds (or the highest bidder), and healthcare entities “sharing” your data across all their platforms (which has nothing to do with your health or privacy)… etc… and just KNOW that your digital world is going to change unless you completely opt out of the system.
Currently, you have zero privacy. Consider the next steps, which directly threatens your freedom.

I’m retired and currently play a lot of bridge…different locations, different groups (female, for the most part), etc. almost without exception, they all bring their cell phones with them to the table and think absolutely nothing of taking a call (usually from a family member) in the middle of a game. It has never been an important call but they wouldn’t’t dream of missing it… or letting it go to message to be answered later. And…unlike the younger generations, they certainly weren ‘t raised attached to a phone. It’s both amusing and maddening.

Age 84 in 23 days, I am enjoying the Autumn years of my life. I will admit to sending semi-monthly emails to my grandsons, now in their 30s, titled “Grandpa’s History” as I enlighten them to my life in the 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

I don’t do TikTok and have no stake in whether it lives or dies. Save for some appreciation that it was there when Trump was banned from all kinds of other social media (a problem that can be handled other ways than preserving TikTok), I don’t care.
When this issue first came up, I opined that if and to the extent it was (and it was) feeding dangerous brainwashing garbage to young people in the U.S. (and it is), but not China, I would have preferred that it just be banned.

What I know about TikTok is that it pushes filth. A LOT of filth. Data is King $. I spent a several days at the Gaylord in Nashville for business. It is a totally gross manufactured indoor environment. Every restaurant we went to the hostess would ask for my phone number. I would say no thank you and the person looked at me like I had 3 heads. One said it was so we can track you… ??
I know my phone number was already given to them at the front desk. But the interesting thing was after the trip my phone blew up with spam text and phone calls.

I never return the hotel room access cards upon checkout since I read that they are programed with my info. So why leave that lying around?
I never use a smart phone to scan those barcode images, like they do for some restaurant menus and marketing ads now. Who knows what info those barcodes will scrape from our phones?
I also don’t add my phone to any vehicle consoles to play my music or gps. I don’t use internet patient portals or consent to the sharing of my medical info.
If I go to a website and am bothered to consent to their privacy policy, I just leave the site.

I recall reading somewhere in the information I got checking in that we’d be charged some fee to replace those cards if we didn’t turn them in- so I always have.

If there is advertising on the card for someone (let’s just say for pizza delivery to your hotel room) that card is free to the hotel & paid for by the advertiser. Advertiser may also be paying additional monies to hotel for preference to use their card over a competitors card like say a small business (me) vs a chain store or chain vs chain. (auction, which is how fakebook advertising was for me when I did it)
I was hit by several hotels to by them but unless I buy 100,000+ of them, pricing is outrageous per card and not all hotel key cards use the same card, at least 4 versions are common. As a small business I just gotta say no as I do not have 10K (.10ea) to blow on free hotel key cards that would take more than a year to just make the investment back.
Now if I were a chain store that could buy say, several million of them for 2 or 3 cents apiece that has a 1-800-talk-to-India hotline to order a pizza to anywhere then that would make sense.
Looking @ current pricing from a reputable supplier 5K of limited print (x 8 options) on one side is .43 ea, way more options for card versions (x 4) & mag stripe options (x 4)

I remember many years ago, before they went out of business, a very upscaled women’s store called Jacobson’s required your social security number to get their in-store credit card. In the days when almost every store had their own credit cards) I told the office it’s against the law to require this protected information and the reply…well, then you don’t get a card. Wonder what happened to all that information when they closed their stores.

#1 is get a google voice phone number, it works on Android or Iphone.(free option)
Give that # out when anyone that you know will SPAM you, you can set G voice to just not ever ring within the app. I have had restaurants request the phone # so they can text you when table is ready instead of having those (expensive) table ready devices they used to have.
It is a money saver to them as most people don’t care & have unlimited plans to just ignore the spam. I still pay as I go since I don’t talk on cell much, business wise I have a VOIP phone system.
VOIP can send anyone calling to my cell(s)(sim-al-ring) if I am unable to answer physically if I am not in the shop.

Anyone here in perhaps their late 40s and onward remembers the perfectly fine life we all had not all that long ago without all this technology.
We drove to work every single day with no phone.
We kissed the family good bye every day and no one saw each other again for perhaps some 12 hours or so..
We ran this entire country on paper and pens really not that long ago.
Looking back at those days, which such a large part of this readership remembers so clearly, I think we were far better off back in those days.
I think that as we look around at society, at the cultural rot, our destroyed family units, at the corruption, at the not only the levels of crime, more heinous crimes, I don’t see how we can add this all up and say we’re better today than those days.
I think that collectively all this is playing a huge part of why we’re dealing with such a mental health crisis.
I’m hoping that as we get rolling on our Revival to continue with Charlie’s work, we can encourage people to not only cut the cord, but also unplug and scale back some of this technology in our lives.
We have got to work and push towards finding a far healthier balance.
I’m not asking to go back to the 50s or the 70s, but in some aspects, yes we should go back to that place, that place where we all had intact traditional families.. where we all took better care of ourselves, where this all was a very high value to us all.
I think it’s entirely possible and needed to have one foot in the past and one foot in the present and looking towards a future- to then strike a needed balance.
All this stuff in this article means nothing to me, if the little bit of tech I have in my life died tomorrow, it’d be perfectly fine with me and my family.
