Industrial production fell under the Left-leaning “traffic light” coalition of Olaf Scholz and continues to slide under the new government, with GDP declining by 0.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2025.
Meanwhile, spending on social welfare has exploded, and is set to increase further this year as Germany’s population ages and unemployment rises. Although the majority of benefit recipients are German, large numbers are non-German citizens.

I was backpacking through Europe in the late 80’s and was surprised by how effeminate the British and European, heterosexual men appeared. The exceptions were the men in Italy and Greece. So if the government would just listen to the will of the majority of the people and actually do this, this alone would free up a whole lot of money to keep funding the needs of their own native population.
It would also settle these people down because to do all this, this one point alone, to do this would solve so many other issues.
Crime would go down, the expense of the crime.. this all frees up money to spend on your own people.
I find it so incredibly frustrating that governments can’t simply be run as we all run our households.
You cannot eat steak for supper every night when the money to pay for it isn’t there.
You can’t feed the neighbors kids when you can barely feed your own.
You can’t fund these ridiculous fantasies when the money isn’t there- no more than we can afford lavish vacations when we live pay check to paycheck.
You can’t shut down your vital economy that the people entirely rely upon to chase these green dreams.
It’s like all the people running this place are delusional and completely unaware, incapable of seeing reality in any way, shape or form.

Interesting that Merz is saying this. But he won’t try to get the Bundestag to do what is necessary, which is to reduce the welfare state to the point where the mostly “non-German citizen” beneficiaries will start to remigrate home or to some other country with better benefits. All the European countries with migrant problems need to do this, but none will even suggest it. You cannot blame the hordes for coming if you are enticing them with a life better than they ever could experience back home.
Merz suggests raising taxes on top-earners. He is smart enough to know that won’t work. Top-earners will simply move elsewhere or move their money or both. So what is it he is really suggesting?
As some others here have suggested, he is likely bringing this up now because of Trump’s tariffs and the negotiations over ending the Ukraine war and reconstruction that will follow. He doesn’t want to cut anything in Germany or tax the rich or anything of the sort. He wants to maneuver for the best deal so that the U.S. will continue to pay for his country’s problems. I certainly hope Trump and Lutnick and Hassett and the rest of the economic team are completely on top of this and will prevent the U.S. from being used to make up for their loss of the Marshall Plan and other former advantages. Merz and the other Europeans will want to structure new economic deals to keep the U.S. paying for their foolishness, with the deals just being called something new. They need to solve their own self-made problems and not rely on the U.S. to keep doing it.
WHY is it just assumed by all that WE, the citizens of the USA, have to pay to rebuild that corrupt-to-the-bone Ukraine? WHY? Just leave it for others to do.
If that war is ‘now’ the EU’s problem, let it be the Eu’s problem to rebuild it if that’s what they want to do!
Maybe because the United States has been a sucker for so long that they think they can continue treating us that way indefinitely. Also, because so many in our government for so many years have just not cared how much of our money they throw around while playing their power games.

It begs to ask, why were the Germans benefitting from the Marshall Plan, when they were the instigators of WW2?
Back in the aftermath of WW2 there were competing plans for what to do with Germany – the Marshall Plan and the Morgenthau Plan. Morgenthau (FDR’s Secretary of the Treasury) wanted to deindustrialize Germany to the extent it could not rearm and potentially start another world war. It was called “industrial disarmament”. It was a good idea and it had a great deal of support while the war was still ongoing. But after the war, it started losing support because it didn’t take into account the Soviet Union and the start of the Cold War. When it became obvious that a healthy, although denazified, Western Germany was essential to the formation and success of NATO and effective opposition to the Soviets in Eastern Europe, the Marshall Plan fairly quickly prevailed and was fully extended to the new Federal Republic and the Morgenthau Plan was discarded and forgotten.

Unfortunately that has never been the case, including the pre and post-Independence periods. We were even tangentially drawn into the Napoleonic wars during the Quasi-War with France and the War of 1812. The only example that comes to mind is the Franco-Prussian War and that ended very quickly.

You’re correct in the short term, but the long, post Trump term is less clear.
There are long term historical trends which are difficult if not impossible for individuals to permanently change, simply because there are underlying structural dynamics in place which are hard to even perceive, let alone influence, in real time.
There is a difference between pointing out these dynamics exist and need to be acknowledged and addresed as likely complications, and being defeatist about them. My observations fall in the former category.

Will Merz be proposing a Marshall Plan for Ukraine and support it with the calls for $500 billion to a trillion? The USA needs to promise not a dime more and have Ukraine reconstruct itself by hard work, production and exporting goods and minerals.
