The original architect in the late 1940’s of a policy of containment of the Soviet Union’s expansionist ambitions, George Kennan, was appalled that NATO was expanding eastward after the fall of the Soviet Empire.
NATO was conceived as a defensive alliance, and there was no need for an eastward NATO expansion after the fall of the Soviet Union.
If he were alive today, George Kennan would be even more appalled at proposals — apparently originating inside the Trump administration — to place American forces in direct confrontation with Russian forces in an area of Eastern Europe which does not have any vital national security interests for the United States.
To needlessly place American forces into a circumstance which has every possibility of leading to World War III is an absurdly stupid proposition. MAGA voters will not support a politician who will place their sons and daughters into that kind of situation.
If the Europeans want to risk a direct war with Russia, let them do so by themselves. America’s vital national security interests are in the western hemisphere and in the far western Pacific in dealing with our main adversary in this world, China and the CCP.

Fortunately, Putin will never agree to stationing American troops in Ukraine, so Trump cannot fall into that trap. Putin is looking for a Ukraine that is neutral by treaty, like Austria during the post-WWII cold war, and obviously there will be no foreign troops in a neutral Ukraine. I don’t think Putin will object to a guarantee of Ukraine’s sovereignty if Ukraine is a neutral buffer state, with no foreign troops and constitutional limits on the size of Ukraine’s military.
Read what that means. It’s just coordination for us. EU has to do the heavy lifting, as I understand it.
