The more I think about it, the more I believe that Putin/Russia is under a lot more stress than we realize. This was the first thought I had when Rubio (on one of the Sunday shows) stated that Russia is a big country with lots of people, and can grind out a win.
That sounds more like flattery than the truth*: (1) Russia is using N. Korean soldiers; (that has got to mean something); (2) Russia is using more missiles and drones in lieu of an army; (3) Rubio repeated 20K men lost by Russia in July (!). (4) Simple threats (secondary sanctions on India, more weapons and defensive patriot anti-missile tech to Ukraine) immediately chased Putin to the negotiating table.
The rumors that Putin will accept “security measures” is also very strange, because that is his “root cause.” It may not be Nato in name, but operationally it sounds like the same thing: Europe and the US in Ukraine with troops(!).
So the strategy is to shower Russia and Putin with respect, play up how big and strong it is, how magnanimous when it concedes on some demands. It cannot look like a surrender by Russia, or they will be incentivized to take it to 11.
As it makes sense (to me, anyway) that the Russian speaking parts of the Ukraine would vote to join Russia, Ukraine would do well to cede that territory. But if I am right, Ukraine will win back more than expected. (Just not too much.)
* Of course, I assume that support from Europe will continue, including US arms paid for by Europe.
