This view is in line with the foreign policy establishment within the United States. Although the media in the U.S. is widely reporting that it was President Putin who requested this meeting with President Trump, in fact it was President Trump who requested this meeting, having boxed himself in threatening secondary sanctions against countries buying Russian oil, i.e, China and India, which has failed to have the intended effect. The U.S. has no leverage against Russia and secondary sanctions are an empty threat.
The idea that President Putin is not serious about ending the carnage shows a lack of understanding of the root causes of this conflict, which are NATO expansion, which Russia views as an existential threat, and Kiev’s aggression against the Russian speaking and aligned peoples of Eastern Ukraine. His intention and goal, as he has articulated since June of 2024, which the Trump Administration and NATO have not acknowledged or refuse to accept, is to bring about a lasting peace and to do that root causes must be addressed.

Ukraine is a sideshow in my estimation with regards to this meeting, but: Ukraine and Russia both will have to trade something for peace. I have always regretted that President Reagan left Russia hanging economically and in global politics after the miracle of Berlin. It seems as there was no plan for the after time.
