You seem to think you know a lot about what Russia will do. All those four regions contain ethnic Russians and have already voted to join Russia and are now in the Russian system (pensions, mobile networks etc).

I’m saying that historically (and geographically) the northern Donbas isn’t of that much importance to Russia, not like the rest. If they are given what they think is a good deal, they will release it — and they will have to negotiate something in order to get any deal, that’s how negotiations work.
Donbas or Crimea and its approaches? They’ll take the latter every time.

If I were President, I would tell Putin:
Stop the war, settle for the Donbas and no NATO for Ukraine, and I’ll get you a terrific bilateral Trade Deal and normal economic relations.

And Putin would simply tell you that he (Putin) will do what is best for Mother Russia…
