
The colonies had been in conflict with England for over a year in June of 1776. A Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia on June 7 of that year. Richard Henry Lee from Virginia offered up a resolution with these now famous words:
“Resolved: That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.”
Lee’s words spurred the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. A committee of five was appointed to draft a statement making the case for the colonies, a statement to the world of the intent and the reason behind that intent.
Members of the Committee were John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Robert R. Livingston of New York and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia. Jefferson took on the task of actually drafting the document as we know it today.
The Continental Congress reconvened on July 1, 1776, and on the following day, the resolution for independence by Lee was adopted by 12 of the 13 colonies, with New York not voting. Minor changes were made to the Jefferson document.
Work on the document continued through July 3 and into the afternoon of July 4, when the Declaration was officially adopted by the Congress. Of the 13 colonies, nine voted in favor of the Declaration, two — Pennsylvania and South Carolina — voted No, Delaware was undecided and New York again abstained.
As we all know, John Hancock, President of the Congress made his signature large enough for King George to read “without his spectacles.”

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. – That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, – That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. – Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. Those are the facts about our Declaration of Independence, the history that we as school children have learned since the creation of this great nation that we celebrate, that we love and honor so.
Often we cannot adequately find words to express our own sentiments, let alone those of a nation and successive generations to come, but Jefferson and that Continental Congress did just that.
The words have stood throughout several centuries as a clarion call for freedom, for breaking free of tyranny, for men to put aside their individual causes and join together to battle for the right of every man, woman and child together to become a people united in goal and resolve.
Today as we celebrate, today as we pledge allegiance to a flag that has gone from 13 stars to 50, may we remember not only the sacrifice, but the resolve. May we honor not only the words, but the unity and deeds of our forefathers. May each of us dig deep into our hearts and work out our differences for the betterment of our nation and our children and grandchildren.
Say a prayer for America today. Rekindle hope today. Honor the past by determining the future.

I have a direct ancestor who was among the founders at Jamestown, an ancient planter, and a member of the original House Of Burgess, I’m proud to say.

Ironically, we left England, but, kept the parliament. I have been saying for several years now that in our haste to not make the President a monarch, we gave the parliament much of the power. Funny thing about the separation of powers, originally, the Supreme Court and court system was little more than an afterthought. If the Congress serves as a check on the power of the President, who checks the power of the Congress?
Yes, there are many forms of tyranny including ‘tyranny of the parliament’ or ‘tyranny of the majority’. And when confidence in elections ebbs this type of tyranny is even more unpalatable.

Born over a century ago, some of President Reagan’s earliest 4th of July memories were of parades featuring marching veterans–Civil War veterans!
“For one who was born and grew up in the small towns of the Midwest, there is a special kind of nostalgia about the Fourth of July.
I remember it as a day almost as long-anticipated as Christmas. This was helped along by the appearance in store windows of all kinds of fireworks and colorful posters advertising them with vivid pictures.
No later than the third of July – sometimes earlier – Dad would bring home what he felt he could afford to see go up in smoke and flame. We’d count and recount the number of firecrackers, display pieces and other things and go to bed determined to be up with the sun so as to offer the first, thunderous notice of the Fourth of July.
I’m afraid we didn’t give too much thought to the meaning of the day. And, yes, there were tragic accidents to mar it, resulting from careless handling of the fireworks. I’m sure we’re better off today with fireworks largely handled by professionals. Yet there was a thrill never to be forgotten in seeing a tin can blown 30 feet in the air by a giant “cracker” – giant meaning it was about 4 inches long. But enough of nostalgia.
Somewhere in our growing up we began to be aware of the meaning of days and with that awareness came the birth of patriotism. July Fourth is the birthday of our nation. I believed as a boy, and believe even more today, that it is the birthday of the greatest nation on earth.
There is a legend about the day of our nation’s birth in the little hall in Philadelphia, a day on which debate had raged for hours. The men gathered there were honorable men hard-pressed by a king who had flouted the very laws they were willing to obey. Even so, to sign the Declaration of Independence was such an irretrievable act that the walls resounded with the words “treason, the gallows, the headsman’s axe,” and the issue remained in doubt.
The legend says that at that point a man rose and spoke. He is described as not a young man, but one who had to summon all his energy for an impassioned plea. He cited the grievances that had brought them to this moment and finally, his voice falling, he said, “They may turn every tree into a gallows, every hole into a grave, and yet the words of that parchment can never die. To the mechanic in the workshop, they will speak hope; to the slave in the mines, freedom. Sign that parchment. Sign if the next moment the noose is around your neck, for that parchment will be the textbook of freedom, the Bible of the rights of man forever.”
He fell back exhausted. The 56 delegates, swept up by his eloquence, rushed forward and signed that document destined to be as immortal as a work of man can be. When they turned to thank him for his timely oratory, he was not to be found, nor could any be found who knew who he was or how he had come in or gone out through the locked and guarded doors.
Well, that is the legend. But we do know for certain that 56 men, a little band so unique we have never seen their like since, had pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. Some gave their lives in the war that followed, most gave their fortunes, and all preserved their sacred honor.
What manner of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists, 11 were merchants and tradesmen, and nine were farmers. They were soft-spoken men of means and education; they were not an unwashed rabble. They had achieved security but valued freedom more. Their stories have not been told nearly enough.
John Hart was driven from the side of his desperately ill wife. For more than a year he lived in the forest and in caves before he returned to find his wife dead, his children vanished, his property destroyed. He died of exhaustion and a broken heart.
Carter Braxton of Virginia lost all his ships, sold his home to pay his debts, and died in rags. And so it was with Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Walton, Gwinnett, Rutledge, Morris, Livingston and Middleton. Nelson personally urged Washington to fire on his home and destroy it when it became the headquarters for General Cornwallis. Nelson died bankrupt.
But they sired a nation that grew from sea to shining sea. Five million farms, quiet villages, cities that never sleep, 3 million square miles of forest, field, mountain and desert, 227 million people with a pedigree that includes the bloodlines of all the world. In recent years, however, I’ve come to think of that day as more than just the birthday of a nation.
It also commemorates the only true philosophical revolution in all history.
Oh, there have been revolutions before and since ours. But those revolutions simply exchanged one set of rules for another. Ours was a revolution that changed the very concept of government.
Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people.

“Trump 2020” would not have been the same as what we are experiencing now, had he – and we – not first been thrust through the fire. We might have heard just four more years of platitudes like, “drain the swamp,” and thought that we had actually done it.
But, fortunately for all of us, Trump’s enemies hated him – and us – far too much. They could not do anything but reveal themselves.
I think the same thing about Rush Limbaugh. I wish he were with us today, with his “talent on loan from God,” talking with us every weekday from noon-3pm.

Thank God is right. America is the only beacon of light in the world. That’s why so many legal and illegal immigrants are trying so desperately to get in.
this does give one pause doesn’t it? what I mean to say is that yes, America represents a very real living idea…come here and live freely…a land of incomparable liberty, and exercise of rule of laws that are reasonably correct…mostly.
but then that same country, and society has also carefully selected basic requirements that MUST BE MET to make this your legal home. Freedom you see, is not free…there is a “cost”. and that cost is bearing responsibility to meet at least the basic requirements.
overall, from a world view, there is nothing stopping most countries from BECOMING sister states to the United States. but they fail to initiate revolutionary action, nor do they have moral righteous cause. Everyone can be hungry and down trodden, under the foot of overlords, subjugated. The price our fore fathers paid IS special, but it’s not ridiculous to consider the question:
why have so many other countries and peoples not decided to copy paste in perform their own transformation>?
when you realize his answer, it actually reinforces many of the reasons why this country should remain inflexible about basic requirements and laws for legal entry.

I am honored to be old enough to remember performers like Red Skelton. People who came from vaudeville, and sometimes from very grim childhood circumstances (“because I was hungry …”), and then practiced their skills on the newly-discovered mediums of radio and then television. Alas, we will never see the likes of them again. But, we will also never forget them.
Celluloid Heroes never really die.
My Dad liked Red Skelton and we watched him on dvd frequently. He came from Vincennes Indiana, a once beautiful bustling city- the type that maybe someday will see a resurgence from tariffs.
We watched it every week at my grandparents’ house. He always seemed genuine and honest, we all learned alot from Mr Skelton.

I agree, Betsy. But not all parents are up to the task; many families are not so fortunate. Many parents unfortunately don’t themselves possess the needed patriotism to do that. We have to acknowledge the role schools and other layers of culture must also play in instilling patriotism in the young.
I know this about parents. And that is a tragedy for their offspring.
But the way too many schools are run these days, especially in the cities, I believe they are unreliable for the task.
This is why I am grateful we have a President immersed in love of country and bold about showing his patriotism and celebrating this day with the all the pomp and ceremony of deserves.
Let’s hope this administration is able to implement changes in school staff and curricula that include civics classes (as we once had) and history classes that reveal America’s greatness. Teacher training and standards are key. We’ve had enough lunatics and Marxists invading our schools from K through college.

My little country town is all decked out for 4th of July. A parade of flags all up and down main street with an historic home literally wrapped in an American flag. I will forgo tonight’s festivities as the town will gather for the fireworks and I’m too old to stumble around in the dark. LOL. But, I will be able to see the fireworks from the farm. I pray no barns catch fire because they are full of hay right about now.
I love small town America! We are the life blood of the country.

1 England and Britain are NOT the same thing.
2 England and America have NEVER been in conflict.
3 George III was king of Britain; not England.
4 In 1776, the “Americans” were over 70% of English origin. The British forces numbered less than 30% English.
5 The American Constitution is almost entirely based upon English Common Law (just done better); see Supreme Court’s doors where at least one of the reliefs shows the signing of Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215.

This is the sentence that started what we are as a country. The courage it took the men who put their names at the bottom of that document should be remembered. Many of them sacrificed everything on that day 249 years ago. They KNEW they would be hunted by the British. Some were executed, some had everything they built burned to the ground. Some had their families destroyed.
All so we can exercise the freedoms we have today.
So, the next time you wave the flag of another country on this soil, you dishonor those people that gave you the right to do so.
We Americans are a forgiving, tolerant people.
However, pushed too far we WILL push back.
First, through our laws, then our police, followed with the help of our military. Push too far, and you will see the same spirit exhibited by the men who Declared their Independence from England. May God have mercy on you after that, because Americans will not…
