I had California farmers as customers for decades, from single owner farms to corporate and the fleets of new white pickups were legendary, as were their gambling junkets to Reno and Vegas. It was the same in my own family since I descended from Russian immigrant farmers.

Hmmm. My family, over the last 150 years, has farmed and ranched in middle America (Kansas). Started with 160 acres and a mule. Hard work and perseverance has increased it to almost 18,000 acres. I can guarantee we’ve never employed an illegal – mostly because it is a family only operation. Most of the land is ranch land. I have the newest truck in a 2022 ram 2500 after driving a 1994 chevrolet for most of my life (born in the 80s, started driving in 1999). While you may have these legendary stories, I can assure you that is the exception and not the rule. My uncle drives a 15 year old f350. Cousin drives a 12 year old ram. None of our vehicles, including mine have less then 100k miles on them.
So while you paint with broad brush strokes, just remember that generic descriptions of your tiny experience does not make the whole. I bet I know well over 100 ranchers and farmers, and only know of 1 that fits the description you make. The rest of us break our backs making sure you can put a steak on the table while simultaneously making sure you have the wheat for your bread.

As I drive my 27 year old Ram 2500 through the Mississippi Delta I can guarantee you that the farmers there that keep Bennie Thompson in Congress do live like that and Catholic Charities has many outposts to see that they have plenty of help.

I think PDJT just made a very large and consequential mistake. A lot of the legal immigrants have moved over to the Republican party on the word of the President that he was going to remove all illegals.
It only takes one broken promise to bring it all down for President Trump. The trouble is, it brings MAGA down with it.
BIG MISTAKE. No longer promises made promises kept. It is my understanding that farmers can employ non nationals that have work permits. The Government have not stopped giving out work permits have they? There is no reason for this.
We still have H-2B. It’s seasonal. There’s a cap on the number of visas but that could probably be changed.
H-2B is for non-farm (Elon Musk’s employees). H-2A is farm workers…. as I understand it.
H-2A is agriculture. H-2B is non-ag. No degrees required. H-1B is what you’re thinking. Degrees required. Elon.
Why do farm and ‘hospitality industry’ workers get special treatment? Why not house painters and others working in building trades? Nannies?

The seasonal immigrant farm workers were in south florida long before my family moved there in 1959. Same for southern CA. This is not new for farms.
As a Christian business owner, I do not think it’s ever beneficial or principled to reward bad/illegal behavior. Not in the short term. Not in the long haul.
While I respect and appreciate the illegal aliens who have come here to better their family situations and even build solid businesses, I do not think winking at their law breaking helps us build a better society. Previous administrations did invite our invaders.
Maybe the solution is to wink them into a performance based citizenship while establishing and maintaining a hardcore performance based immigration system moving forward.

It is the employers responsibility to get work permits for these workers. This is an unnecessary problem. I fault the employers, they are knowingly facilitating the law breaking.

Yes. My sons SSN was stolen when he was 17 yr old. He is 22 yrs old now. Every year for the rest of his life he has to get a code from the IRS to file a tax return. Right now he is in college and he has to get the code for us to claim him. He had to have facial recognition on 2 separate devices with the IRS to clear his name because an illegal tried to file in his name reciving mega money.

I am so upset. My wonderful daughter just graduated magna cum laude with a degree in education. Her dream to be a teacher has been shattered. For months she’s been planning her first classroom. We’ve gone to thrift stores and bought books, furniture, supplies, etc. She has been so excited to be a teacher! She substituted for 3 years while in school so she could get a great position. Well today she recieved her job position. The worst school in the county teaching English language learners in a split of 3 grades. She doesn’t get a classroom, she gets a cart to roam around from room to room. Our county has so many illegal children and there’s not enough teachers or resources. The experienced teachers refuse to take those kids so the new teachers get stuck there. My daughter is a youth leader at church, she’s done everything right and this is just so wrong! To hear trump is going to change on service workers infuriates me. Our county is full of them (tourist county in east tn). There’s no housing, emg rooms are full, crime is rampant and our schools are overwhelmed.

As I understand it, the H2-A visa is for farm workers. The way the program is conceived is that TEMPORARY workers will come when the farmer needs help and leave when the season is over. The FARMER is supposed to be responsible for their housing and medical insurance so that the TAXPAYER IS NOT ADVERSELY affected. If the law is followed like this, I can’t see anyone objecting to it. But as we know, employers don’t follow the law and once they are here, they never go home. And now Trump is sounding like he’s going to bend the rules also.
No job goes infilled if you pay enough. We need to employ only U.S. citizens or LEGAL immigrants. Anything else is simply unacceptable. No excuses!

Retired Magistrate here: I am a realist. We had an open border for 4 years with millions of unvetted individuals pouring over our borders. Biden (actually his handlers) laid out the welcome mat; sanctuary cities offered all kinds of incentives to make a home in their city. We don’t even know how many people came in during that 4 year period. Some were given special status, others weren’t. Add this unknown number to the illegals that were already here and yes, we have a huge problem.
Currently we don’t have the personnel to deport them all. President Trump is trying to get the “bad actors” out first and he is being stymied at every turn, although we are deporting some but not as fast as most of us would like. It is not because President Trump is not trying; he is. President Trump is being pragmatic and attempting to get the worst of the illegals out first. Then he will deal with the rest but it is going to take years to get them all out, if that is even possible.
The Biden Administration intentionally left a real mess for President Trump to deal with and he is dealing with numerous issues at the same time. So, I will wait and see how this plays out.
Finally, I also understand the problem with the H-1B visa holders as my husband’s job in IT (main frame) was taken by an individual from India here on a H-1B visa.

In 1959 my family moved to south Florida and seasonal Mexican farm workers was an accepted practice long, long before we arrived.
It also is a season practice in the hospitality industry during high season with the influx of snowbirds.
This is a long standing practice and accepted. These aren’t the people we need to be worrying about.
