What I saw personally in farming was a transition, one I participated in personally with my business, from field labor to automation. As a machine shop owner, I was tasked to work on prototypes and short run experiments in the then new field of mechanized labor replacement. I think, in my own area, it was mechanical grape harvesters and tray laying and pickup machines for grapes that got the most attention. However, industry wide, there was a move to automation that literally removed humans from all over the landscape.
By the time I left in 2023, about the only labor I saw around me were a few tractor drivers, the sweeper/shaker drivers for almonds and some orchards still pruned by hand but increasingly machines were used for pruning too.
Even truck vegetable growing and harvesting was largely mechanized and hybrid plants developed to work with it.
The rub, to me, as you pointed out about business models, is that humans are greedy. Greed is good. Maximizing profits and wealth is good. That seems to be the cultural imperative as I look around me today. Greed and the decay of morality and spirituality are in my opinion driving a lot of what we experience today. Simply watching the activities in LA over the last week underscores that but by no means covers it. Look around the country and the world. Shocking and sad, if one asks me, an old male forest dweller. Hope it works out.
And besides the sheer greed of cutting numbers, the type and quality of the plants that must be used for this type of farming is not the healthiest.

Due to the wisdom of the Supreme Court’s decision on who should be counted in the census, the state of CA has 5 extra representatives in the HOR because of these people. How can the country continue to exist when illegals have representation in Congress? Being that we effectively have NONE, I think it is entirely fair to argue that Mexican citizens are better represented by our Congress than we are. How to stop it? “Aggressive removal” of ALL of them without exception.

As far as wages are concerned, inflation by the fed since the early ’70’s has made life miserable for all of us as wages do not keep up. I was making $1.65 an hour back in the ’71-’72-time frame and could buy 5 gallons of Super Shell, 95 octane, selling for $.30 per gallon. My kids in the 2007–2008-time frame made about +/- $8.25 an hour. One of them came up to me and asked me what I made back then and told them. They all laughed and said they were making 5x as much. I then asked them how many gallons of gas can you buy with your $8.25? The answer was 2 at a watered-down octane of 87. Game, set and match for dear old Dad. It’s not how much you make but how much you earn can buy.
Our ‘dollar’ is worth so little now in comparison to when it was first brought out, that it ‘may be’ worth .02 cents today. Our money is nearly worthless now…

Before anyone screams “but I thought we were getting rid of ALL of them!” Trump had earlier this year said that he’d like the illegal workers to be vetted and documented first, then if the employer could vouch for them, they could have a temporary visa.
Was that before we voted?
Too bad he didn’t provide the same courtesy to the 20,000+ Federal workers, let go due to their probationary status.
This is kinda like the Selective Service back when we still had the draft…anyone might be drafted into the army but some were more likely to be drafted than others.

Time to start prosecuting the CEOs of companies who appear to be knowingly hiring illegal alien workers using fake or stolen SS numbers, or paying in cash with no SS number at all. The reason the immigration system has never been fixed is that the companies that use illegal labor don’t want it fixed, and pay big campaign donations to make sure it is NOT fixed.
