President Trump has not made any statement after Ukraine launched an attack yesterday deep into Russia targeting long-range nuclear capable bombers. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also remained quiet throughout the day today. However, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaking from Vilnius, Lithuania, publicly bragged about the operation today.
According to Turkish officials (note silence from Russia & Ukraine), the previously scheduled meeting between Russian and Ukranian negotiators ended today after less than an hour. There are no details about what took place inside the Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, just that once the meeting attendees were seated and gave initial remarks, the event dissolved. Both the Russian and Ukrainian teams left the building.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared full of nervous energy as she spoke to journalists outside the White House, noting that President Trump was in meetings and discussions all day while taking phone calls.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have also remained silent.
Inside Russia the general sense is one of preparation. As I noted in my debrief from last year, the government of Russia has been preparing the Russian people for an expanded escalation of the conflict for quite some time. The Russian media are deliberately pointing to Ukraine -and only Ukraine- in their domestic reporting of the attacks. There is no mention within Russian media of EU, NATO or USA support for the events that took place Sunday; however, there were a few mentions of Great Britain as a likely assistant to the attacks.

It would have been nice if the Ukrainian negotiator and the Russian negotiator met at mid-room, and one or the other said (e.g. the Ukrainian speaking), “We had a win yesterday, you’ve had some win’s like Kursk. This war has gone on for three years, we’re both losing too much. How about we get to work on some serious agreements to bring about peace, one item at a time?” For the Russian, just invert a few words: “You had a win yesterday, we’ve won big in Kursk and across the battle lines ….”.
Yep, I suppose I live in fantasyland. It doesn’t seem that anything like that occurred. The Ukrainians are thugs, former Soviet type thugs, and the Russians are still thugs, even if the “Soviet” part has passed. (Those who claim otherwise, lack perspective.) It’s more like the meeting of two Mafioso families at war. It’s too personal, too much pride on the line, too much to lose if one or the other gives an inch. Both sides are entirely convicted of their own righteousness and the inherent evil of their enemy, and are unwilling even to hear the other side’s position, or potential terms.
Trump knows that all of life is a negotiation. We can negotiate up front with less pain, or we can negotiate later, after a lot of pain. Even the side that “wins” in the latter situation, loses too much. Look what the WWII “win” cost the USA and her allies. The cost was not only in blood and treasure. The pre-war countries changed. What happened in WWII changed America for both the better, and many things for the worse (lookin’ at you, self-entitled “boomer” generation, which I am an unfortunate part of). What Trump is fighting in the current “trade war” is an attempted reversal of some of the WWII side effects upon America. For Europe and Japan, it seems that WWII drained most of the testosterone, and a good deal of common sense, from their male population and fractured families. BOTH sides lose a war that is fought to the bitter end. Wars that result in a negotiated, long standing peace, give both sides a chance to “be better”, to prosper.
That said, and it applies to my own position on national defense, if the war must be fought, fight it with every ounce of passion, of blood, of sacrifice, and effort the collected efforts of a country can muster, make it short, decisive, and win the dang thing. If none of that applies, if it’s not strategic, why the hell are we sacrificing blood and treasure IN THAT war?!
Until both Russian and the Ukraine come to understand those terms, no one can end this war, and for damn certain at the end, no one will win the war, either.

I don’t think there is much negotiation to be done with Russia. There is negotiation needed within NATO and between NATO and Ukraine.
Putin, before Russia began this military operation, stated in early 2023 the reason for their action and made their expectations clear — mainly a neutral, non-NATO Ukraine, no further expansion of NATO, and safety and freedom for Russian ethnics inside Ukraine. He noted violations against Russia of previous agreements.
I don’t think Putin is going to be ‘negotiated’ out of these expectations.
As for fighting the war with passion — remove US passion and other US resources from the war as soon as possible.
