Not surprisingly, it appears the Chinese trade delegation that previously made commitments in Geneva, Switzerland, were wearing a panda mask at the time of the negotiations with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
According to a Truth Social post shared by President Trump, the panda mask was recently removed and the true Beijing dragon behind it appeared. This is not a shock to anyone who has followed the dynamic of Chinese trade promises and practices for a while.

China was moving slowly on promises to issue export licenses for rare earths minerals. The Geneva deal called for China to lift trade countermeasures that restrict its exports of the critical metals needed for U.S. semiconductor, electronics and defense production.
“The Chinese are slow-rolling their compliance, which is completely unacceptable, and it has to be addressed,” U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC, without specifying how that would happen.

We have massive deposits recently discovered in Wyoming.
Gas production fracking water in Pennsylvania is coming back up with significant dissolved rare earths in it, I suspect these could be far more cleanly refined than starting from raw ore.
That’s really the highest hurdle in the equation, clean processing of rare earths seems a good target for a bit of a moonshot effort; conquer that problem, and obviate the draconian controls placed upon it, and rare earths will be anything but rare, and America will lead that metal race too.
Thorium will always be an issue with some of the minerals dug up out of the ground so long as the nuclear regulatory environment favors ridiculous amounts of red tape.

I think it is coming soon. There are only a small number of US rare earth companies. The main one is a public company called MP Materials. Their stock ticker is MP and it’s trading around $22. Similar to Palantir and US steel, this will likely be a financial beneficiary in this administration. Albermarle is a big Lithium company that is US based, but I don’t believe they are involved in rare earth currently, but it would be interesting to see them expand. Mining needs a long lead time to get productive. We need several entities making big moves in this space and soon.

A big factor in that I’d guess is the insistence on continuing to rely the linear no threshold model for radiation exposure. There’s more anecdotal evidence that contradicts the model then replicateable experiments to confirm it’s veracity.

I’ve wondered for the last many years if keeping our known reserves of minerals and fossil fuel reserves unworked, just inventoried, has been part of a plan. ‘Oh, we’ll run out in fifty years, a hundred years…..’ I don’t give the environmentalists much credit, but maybe there IS a plan to preserve mineral wealth for the folks living centuries after us. Food for thought at least.

Trump needs to take the Doge money, or the Harvard / Ivy league Grant money and use it to build large factories immediately. These will build the products which we need that China currently sells us. We must do this as fast as possible and cut our ties to China.

We have rare earth materials in the US. Declare a military weapons emergency requiring rare earth minerals for chips and begin mining now.
Open up Federal lands that actually have an abundance of rare earth minerals. At the same time make the mining process safe, while being ecologically and environmentally sound. Repair the displaced earth as the mining moves along.
This is America and if there is any way achieve such a thing it is the application American brain power. Elon has great tunnel tools that may be adaptable. He has robots that may do the dangerous work.

As mentioned above, there are rare earth minerals in waste products from other processes, including water and coal ash. Maybe we should initiate research to develop those sources thereby solving a couple of problems at once.
American “branpower” has been destroyed by the upward theft and centralization of new technology invention. Traditional American values and the Constitution flow from the individual, not from top-down ownership and control. Top-down theft and control makes peons and slaves of our creative people.
The US Constitution provides for “securing” patents and copyrights only for Authors and Inventors themselves, to their respective Writings and Discoveries. The 13th Amendment prevents involuntary servitude, and the 1987 Peonage Act prevents State peonage.
But virtually all State (and private) universities now require graduate students and professors to assign all their inventions and software (copyright) to their universities, in advance. There is no choice, because they all do it now. Our best, smartest and most creative people are concentrated at universities during their most productive early careers. This peonage is responsible for the decline of US technology leadership.
Economists are ‘baffled’ aboout this decline, which was well-apparent since the mid 80’s.
Universities famously used to collaborate with startups and industry after WW2 through the 1970’s. Professors and students went back-and-forth between industry and teaching. Companies funded grad students and research. Grad students and professors owned their inventions and software they wrote. Famous examples are Sanford/Hewlett-Packard and the rest of the explosion of technology during that time period. “Old” companies and monopolies were displaced by new technology and ‘startups’ owned and controlled at least in part by the free (not enslaved) inventors and software creators who worked their asses off to create and build. Established entities internally block new technology, which is well known.
By the mid 70’s, Universities first began to draw massive funding from Congress, and concluded that “industry” was their prey to ‘license’, not their collaborators. Patent ownership law was changed in 1982 (and detrimentally much more later) and Universities required all students and professors to assign all their future inventions (not just those funded by the US Government) to their University. There is no choice – all Universities did this. A monopoly salvery/peonage system. Intellectual slavery (of the primary skill of the slaves-their technical creativity) enforced by the States at State Universities. Gone was the individual incentive to work, create and succeed. But the established system was no longer threatened.
Software continued to be owned by the software writers, which facilitated continuation of US software creative leadership for a while. But Universities then (apparently thinking they should have owned and gotten royalties for the internet) later required students and professors to also assign any and all future software copyright to their universities. So te US lost both technology (invention) and software leadership.
US Government employees who make inventions, however,now own their inventions without the Government even getting a practical license, after patent law changes reportedly made through NIH. So NIH employees can own and license drug inventions, while they ‘create’ and award their grant topics, and while the FDA controls drug approvals. A quite classic organizational conflict of interest. Remarkable!!!
Abraham Lincoln pointed out that “The patent system added the fuel of interest to the fire of Genius”. The effective involuntary servitude imposed by university peonage – removed the “fire of interest”. Why work hard to invent, when the university has already taken all your future inventions? Eliminated your social and economic mobility in a now top-down stratified system? Better to spend time trying to get funding with something within government employee-originated funding Topics, and publishing “minimum publishable units”.
The US won’t regain tech capability, much less leadership by continuing to steal the creativity of our creative citizens for university licensing. University reform has many requirements to get us back to a functioning country.
Of course, universities are supposed to teach, not be in ‘business’. The arrogation of inventions and software from the inventors and authors is even more evil, because it is the Professors (and grad students/researchers) who generate technology themselves to get funded and get published. Universities have moved WAY beyond their original mission to teach, which gained them tax, massive grant funding from taxpayers, and other special status. And Universities are not like a business paying a salary to employees. The students pay tuition, and Professors even need to get enough funding from their own ideas to support not only themselves and their grad students, but also the EXTREME bureaucratic overhead that has grown with university expansion beyond teaching. Didn’t RFKjr say during recent congressional questioning that the NIH ‘overhead” on grants can be 70+% of the amount that would go to the actual research? The professors need to fund the same bureaucracy that steals inventions from them and their gradstudents-researchers. What a scheme!! I remember a uniersity that tried to take a competitive award from a professor and grad students who worked on their extra ‘own time’ to win a major DARPA prize. After the award, the university tried to claimed the million(s)$
Universities licensing offices focus on medical inventions because of the enormous royalties from the drug companies. Inventions that take work to develop tend to be ignored.
Another issue state Universities ignore. If there is licensing or other stock/revenue from inventions taken from professors/etudents, shouldn’t (by the same logic) that revenue go directly into the State Treasury that funds the university, rather than the University that has taken it from the inventors? crickets….
