In Canada the Liberals had looked doomed to suffer a massive loss in this year’s election. In early January, the CBC Poll Tracker had given the Conservatives 44% of the vote, the Liberals 20%, the NDP 19%, the BQ 9%, the Greens 4% and the far-right People’s Party 2%. With these vote shares, the Conservatives would have won a landslide with well over 200 seats.

This latest election for us in Canada was our 2020. A definite cheat.
One could argue that all the Trump rhetoric statements about Canada becoming the 51 State caused a backlash against the Conservatives. Take a step back and realize that might have been the desired outcome Trump was seeking. Pierre and Trump would have gotten along too well.
With an opponent like Carney who will more than likely double-down on stupid; well that just means more winning for. the USA. Trump will exercise the precise amount of leverage to get what we want in any trade deals with Canada. Meanwhile, Alberta has positioned itself for succession legally. Were they to pull the trigger on that, then Alberta might eventually become the 51st US State. All the crude / shale oil is in Alberta and shipping raw crude within Canada is not feasible. But pumping it to the US to be refined then sold back to Canada is how things have been working.
Canada is so screwed if they do not turn around and start playing fair. Time will tell if Carney will bend the knee or not. It is very true that the US props up Canada and keeps its weak economy working. None of this is the fault of the US or Trump. It is Canada who dug the hole and now they need to climb out of it. Even Trudeau admitted they would collapse if the US equalizes the trade imbalance.

Russia is in fact losing and losing very badly. The Russian military is downright incompetent. They have a top-down micromanaged style and mostly conscripts. They haven’t changed since it was the Soviets after WWII. Most of their military hardware is WWII surplus. They don’t have the industrial military complex to effectively manufacture. They are running out of ammo and munitions which is why they are buying North Korean ammo and munitions, the quality control is so bad it’s nearly a 50/50 chance your artillery barrel will explode. Pretty much ceased flying over Ukraine territory as their planes are constantly being shot down. They’ve taken to flying near the border and using glide bombs but now the F-16’s have shot a few of those attempts down as well. The armor on their vehicles is so bad a tiny FPG drone carrying a small explosive can pop the top off a T-90 tank with impunity. The Russians destroyed an Abrahms M1 tank (not the latest models) but the tank crew survived because the armor protected them. They escaped and Russia just kept pounding the already disabled Abrahms. Then they towed it to Moscow and put it on display tour. The fact that the Abrahms withstood such a pounding is remarkable when compared to the T-90’s. US Bradley armored vehicles with a heavy gun are being used by Ukraine like it’s a full tank. Turns out they can scoot and shoot and take out T-90 tanks with ease with surviving direct hits. The FPG drones are changing the face of war. Now they have some drones with a very long fiber optic cable so their wireless controls cannot be jammed.
If Putin won’t come to the table, Trump will authorize more advanced toys for Ukraine to use against Russia and within Russian territory. Ukraine will take more territory and it only gets worse and worse for Russia. Add in more sanctions, etc.
Trump has so many levers he can pull. Don’t compare Neville Chamberlain with Trump. There is no comparison. If anything, Trump aligns more with Churchill.

But with respect to Chamberlain, I think he was largely a victim of a failed strategy put in place after WWI. That strategy called for the starvation of the German Federation’s people and the creation of a group of “mini-states” in Eastern Europe to contain Germany with the UK’s military backing. Post-WWI UK was in no position to maintain the military force required to make that “backing” credible, so Chamberlain was in the position of having to stall for time while the UK rebuilt its forces.
(France, for its part also had a failed strategy that relied on defensive works to prevent another Franco-Prussian War but didn’t maintain credible force for the Belgium border.)

Interesting results. Especially since the pro-NATO candidate was trailing far behind in the polls, leading up to the election .
So…Romania had a 65% turnout…the exact percentage that we did in 2024. A separate article that I read said that this election there was a noticeable increase in voting from abroad (i.e. fraud opportunity).
