White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hold press gaggle outside the White House. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gives details on the China tariff increase and the 90- day tariff pause on other countries.
As outlined in the press remarks, 75 countries have contacted the White House to renegotiate their access to the U.S. consumer market. Secretary Bessent noted, each of these new trade agreements needs to be handled independently and “President Trump wants to be personally involved in each one. That’s why there is a 90-day pause.”
Bessent revisited his prior comments and warning to global trade partners about not retaliating to last week’s announcement. The hostile response from China was the triggering mechanism for the tariff increase. WATCH:

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/04/congress-to-question-whistleblower-who-accused-meta-of-helping-china-in-ai-race/
In her prepared remarks, which will be delivered at a Senate subcommittee on crime and counterterrorism hearing this afternoon, Wynn-Williams accused Meta of working “hand in glove” with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). That partnership allegedly included efforts to “construct and test custom-built censorship tools that silenced and censored their critics” as well as provide the CCP with “access to Meta user data—including that of Americans.”
Wynn-Williams worked as Facebook’s Director of Global Public Policy from 2011 to 2017. She left at the height of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, just before Mark Zuckerberg got grilled by Congress over misinformation and election interference on its platform.
Will she use two bullets?
That’s what tripped up the last guy who staged his AI suicide.
Amateur.
somewhat related, but snagged this comment because it captures some of the truth…but then also commits an untruth (I’ll unroll it after the quote)
“Deepseek is better than any of the llama models. Qwen is as good as llama models. China has long been putting out important papers advancing the state of LLMs and nearly half of the major researchers at the major US labs are Chinese. It is absurd to suggest that llama or AI research briefings from Meta have in any way significantly advanced China’s AI progress.
In any population with good education infrastructure the percentage of intelligent people capable of making AI advancements will be similar. China has 4 times our population and thus all else being equal should have 4 times more major AI advancement contributions.”
the first para is true…deepseek isn’t simply the best effort so far, but it realizes advancements at a practical useful level that is pennies on the dollar cheaper in terms of microprocessing power and total energy tolls. (nvidia investors were quite clear noticing this…as the price action followed that truth)
the second para is somewhat true but with some twists. it’s not the size of a population necessarily that realizes exceptional advances in science and practical tech. Israel is a perfect example..as well, Ukraine…yes, I said it..before this war, Ukraine had some of the most effective cyber criminal in the world. (one must accept that even if you don’t like criminals, we can still respect the intelligence as it were). now here is the twist. how does china exceed technologically. obviously population size and even education numbers do not actually correlate to that cause. the reality is that china steals.
if one would follow the long arc of investigations, arrests and also sudden advances in Chinese tech,…what you discover is that these Chinese post graduate, graduate, h1b visa enabled foreign nationals are embedded and working at some of the most leading edge tech companies in the world…specifically right here in the US. It’s no surprise that China has strange advances that defy statistical scrutiny. What I am more interested in? how much of these tech companies are actually propped up with stock investors cutouts who basically pay for access?
God Bless America
Bessent is perfect for the job. Thanks PDJT for appointing him and keep up the good work.
The adult in the room, keeps things on an even keel. I need to know more about him, maybe I can learn a thing or two.
He’s a class act, that’s for sure.
Calm, confident, and cool under fire.
Like you said “ class act for sure “
It makes one wonder if the B2 Stealth Bombers on Diego Garcia are for Iran or China?
Didn’t see that (cmon Wordman!) report.
Maybe Taiwan….
Good point. Maybe this is PDJT saying your move Xi!
Of course it is and he’s showing everyone how it’s done.
We have the leverage. He and his team knew this was going to happen once the tariffs went into effect. I would bet there are proposals prepared for every country. Some of these meetings will take hours. Some will take days. The first will be Japan and South Korea (IMO) and they will be good fair deals that, yes benefit the US but also provide value to them.
Those will be the kickstarters.
And there will be some who learn the hard way.
They don’t know either. “ their heads are on fire and their ass is catching”!!
Most of the minor countries with super-high tariffs on this schedule, have those super-high tariffs because they serve as transshipment points for Chinese goods that evade Chinese tariff’s. If they wanna be Chinese serfs, these countries are gonna be tariffed like their Chinese masters. Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc.. Since these are reciprocal tariffs, the other minor countries like Lesotho, are most likely bad actors on their own, using targeting US goods to prop up an illegitimate government, out of ideological bias (i.e. “MUSLIMs”), and so forth.
But hey, my response to the anti-Trump, anti-tariff boys and girls out there is, “… better a trade war than a shooting war, which is what anti-US trade policies will eventually lead to”.
Read the fine print. The schedule has nothing to do with “super-high tariffs”. It is all based on the difference in goods trade value with fudge factor for things like “elasticity of demand”.
So consider a small country. You need oil, but oil is priced in dollars so you need dollars. How to get dollars? Well, one way is to trade, say natural resources, to the US for dollars.
If you want the dollar to be the petro-dollar and reserve currency, then obviously you have to export dollars from the US, either trade in goods, services, financial instruments, or currency swaps.
The Trump Administration is cutting out the B.S. by focusing on the trade imbalance. Fudge factors, i.e. non-tariff related trade barriers against US goods are a natural part of those negotiations. The tariff’s are the hammer to bring the countries to the negotiating table. By “bad actors”, I include both economic and strategic barriers, as Trump’s negotiating team will also do. However, the “jihadi” nations are going to have tariff problems with the USA regardless of their trade barriers against the US market, the same with any other of the USA’s enemy states.
Interesting.. And lots of food for thought.
Thanks for the post
Exactly.
Nail on the head ! What should happen to countries caught shipping for China to avoid the Tarriffs?
@sundance This is what I was talking about in other posts. 47 is not sticking with the plan of big permanent tariffs on every country. This herky jerky plan makes it look like a Hussein Obozo Syrian red line and makes 47 not to be taken seriously even though he has left still higher tariffs for some items and a general 10% for everyone else. The DemonRats and Left Wing propaganda media will use this as evidence to say that Trump is a clown and should not taken seriously. Also, they will say that Trump is like Biden and has lost his cognitive abilities with all these inconsistencies. SMH.
Don’t worry about it. If they didn’t have this issue to attack Trump they would make up something else.
Agreed! But I don’t want Trump to make it too easy for the DemonRats and Left Wing propaganda media to try and destroy Trump and MAGA.
He won’t, Poison. He will be attacked regardless, even by Republicans. Can’t avoid that.
He knows their game, and he has them dangling. They can’t anticipate his moves. He is sitting in the driver’s seat.
Hes letting them bloviate and scream thus exposing themselves as fatted, ignorant leaches who have been sucking on American blood for decades.
No worries….👍🏻
I agree Betsy Jones. But my concern is the average person that doesn’t pay attention to the details and believes anything that they see the Left Wing media propagandists, the DemonRats, and the RINOS say and do on tv. Remember millions of regular folks believed in the injections regardless of what some of us told them not to take it a few years ago. So there are millions of gullible people out there.
The support of Trump is over 80% on several issues. CNN just called him a ‘soaring eagle’ and legacy media has viewers in the thousands, not millions.
Enjoy seeing the activation of “Art of the deal”
1. Shock proposal.2.expose the imbalance or enemy.3. renegotiate.
China is fully exposed as the source of economic imbalance
Suddenly I’m picturing Bill Murray vs the gopher in Caddyshack, for some reason…
Hahahahahahahaaaaa!!
Yes, there are.
Let’s hope there are more of us… those who can see, who voted for him along with increasing numbers whose lives are being improved and who recognize who is responsible and join the MAGA crew.
Let’s also hope that the Democrats, growing more and more insane with each passing day, become so repugnant, will continue to self own their clear anti American selves (violence and public disturbances) so even those who claim to be adherents of that disgusting uncivil party are driven away.
(I as well sit stunned at the magnitude of the uninformed and reactionary public. I am unsure if there is any help for them.)
Pray for that.
Trump is a tested, known commodity. His ways and means were long-factored into the voters’ minds. He didn’t fool 78m+ voters, they counted on him doing this.
His second term would have been fought tooth and nail, the same untrustworthy sorts surrounding him, Greg. He more than likely would have been impeached again.
No one can tell me that Almighty God didn’t allow that terrible four year hiatus of darkness. To show us the hideous globalist, authoritarian dangers which his third term is routing.
The preamble, in retrospect, to His great His mercy following.
And there was a ton of planning going on during that four year hiatus. Great, great planning.
He’s doing exactly as he said he would do.
Amen!
I Pray the Republican’t Bootlickers in the House and Senate continue to unmask themselves as their Demon-scat Masters twist and shriek now that the First Rays Of Sunlight Shine On The District of Criminality in a very long time.
They can’t help themselves, dear brother.
In truth I believe deep inside, if they were honest (I know…), they wish like heck they were President Trump.
They’re envious of everything he has and is, and envious of the love he receives from millions upon millions. And the power he is exercising, something they’ve always consodered to be solely theirs.
President Trump is changing the lives Ds and Rs in Congress never give a thought to; and they despise him, a non member of their sanctimonious privileged Big Club, for it…
Just a quick non professional take from an armchair observer.
Sad but true, Rand is a POS
That narrative is also collapsing before our eyes. It took 4 years but the vast majority of Americans do NOT any longer buy the propaganda of the moonbat media. There aren’t even enough liberals left to create real “Hands Off “ protests. They had to go to the marijuana dens and hookah bars to find people they could pay to go to them.
😶🌫️🤣
Let TheAveragePersonTM figure it out on their own. I did.
So like most warfare, speed is key.
This will be over before anyone understands what happened.
Are you better off is all that matters.
Always on target Betsy.
Bless, sis…
And I love history!
A great teacher, Horse, for those willing to learn.
Haven’t you heard that his favorability polls went up 4% in the last few days? The average person agrees with what PDJT is doing. 54% agree with him. Get over it.
Re “Remember millions of regular folks believed in the injections regardless of what some of us told them not to take it a few years ago. So there are millions of gullible people out there.”
There are millions fewer gullible people out there BECAUSE they believed in the injections and subsequently died as a result. As time goes on, more and more gullible people will die from having taken the jab. Don’t complain, the playing field is steadily becoming more level. God works in mysterious ways.
It doesn’t bother him anymore, he does what he does, and it goes where it goes. They can play the fool all they want to, no one cares to hear them anymore.
The media, paid Bots, and Act Blue have to pay people to react, it’s just AstroTurf.
No, Xavier, it does not bother him. Small beer compared to what he has been put through. They damn themselves.
And so while they’re huffing and puffing, President Trump remains completely focused and dedicated to fulfilling the promises he has made.
A man of honour.
And I truly believe a man at peace.
I am glad I scrolled. Perfect encapsulation as usual.
Love you, dear sir 😘
But But wait he destroyed the stock market….. never mind
Wow!!! Super powers!!!!
He also somehow induced the DementoRat party to destroy itself.
Must. Get. More. 🍿 .
As the saying goes, he has ALL THE CARDS.
The whole deck, Joan 😎
Are we enjoying a mostly Eeyore-free thread here?
I won’t know until I go back and read the rest. But they do seem to be in hiding..
..for the nonce!
There is one apparently, steph.
Here’s the antidote 😉
Watched Rand Paul complain about it . cudlow agreed Tarriffs are taxes and we don’t like taxes . Rand Paul keeps proving he’s a bionic idiot brat ! The playing field is like a New York City court supplied by Alvin Bragg Donuts ! We have been in a gun fight with paper straws ! Oh squirmy legs let’s surrender like Apghganisyan and the “news “ will report it’s ok now ! ?? Is that what we should do ? “We have 1 chance “ . Surrender like a baby boomer you expect to go to a school board meeting ???
the leftist media asked him to do targeted tariffs and mocked him for not doing it… then he did it
tom sawyer if he wanted this the whole time
Yep, getting that fence painted !
😁
Best thing is that the WH is NOT taking questions from anyone who has pronouns on their bio!!!!
He doesn’t give a shit what these “democrats and left wing media “ jerks think and do and I’m glad he doesn’t!!
yep his give a dman busted many many years ago … while he watched the USA being stripped of our resources and our money…he is in that stage…..eff em!!!
Hope that Jodee song gets some air play, perfect for this time
Poison, stop giving the left real estate in your imagination.
😁
I have a feeling that PDJT has the dirt on so many of these corrupt people and will release it at the optimal moment. It will knock them back on their heels.
When I say “dirt” I mean irrefutable evidence.
I’m not a Pollyanna. I just feel that PDJT has had a lot of data for a long time, and with DOGE’s access to systems and AI technology, I think it’s nearly a “shooting fish in a barrel” situation.
If he can set them back on their heels, they will not be in a position to nip at his heels.
Reminder…..
PDJT attended a lot of their elite parties, without consuming alcohol.
Pretty sure he has the goods on all of them 🤷♀️
I knew a highly intelligent trial lawyer who was so good at pretending to be stupid that even other lawyers in his office thought he “wasn’t all there.”
The man used his “he’s stupid” reputation to flatten his opponents, time after time.
And after a victory, he’d do something really stupid to make it seem that his victory was only an accident.
Trump has played the clown his whole life. It’s one of his powers.
He is bringing chaos . . . for a reason hidden in dark clouds.
I played stupid at an American legion card game faking drunk and making dumb bets. Then cleaned up. Whatever it takes.
There’s no mystery here. VSG states repeatedly and clearly what he is trying to accomplish. You simply need to take him seriously.

and my favorite!
All of this is calculated . . .
It should be obvious the President Trump is a highly intelligent, highly calculating, cautious and deliberative man. But many of my smart friends think he’s stupid and chaotic, and I can’t convince them otherwise.
And that’s because Trump throws up a smokescreen, time after time. He is an actor playing the clown, while inside his fascinating mind, the wheels are whirling, the deals are being planned.
I knew a few lawyers like this, and they were very effective.
It is fascinating to observe him manipulate the press and the conversations to items he deems important. He reveals snippets of his intellect in his humor, So quick witted. I am in awe of how great he really is.
…- Battle of the Billionaires!… – Man, I would *LOVE* to see him break out the hair clippers on alla these punks…
I hope this strategy works because the DemonRats and RINOS will try and use this inconsistentcy to try and impeach 47 after the midterms if the DemonRats win uh I mean steal the election.
By midterms, the factories will be humming in the United States, and food will be cheap at the grocery store.
That’s easy to predict.
Not all the factories will take that long. Men who run manufacturing plants are accustomed to “re-tooling” their lines. So the ones who will just be making the same widgets as before will need to retool to build newer widgets and get cranking.
I am NOT saying it’s easy. I’m saying that we have intelligent people who know how to do it and it isn’t going to take several years. In some cases…
Remember the point of one of the best articles Sundance ever wrote – “We’re not good. We just rucky.” 🙂
Yes, employees will need to be hired long before the factories are “humming”.
Yes, but the refineries to convert raw materials into usable forgings will take a tad longer.
Oh, it’s you again
Yep. He made it back to give us his snippets of gloom, doom, and concern.
yep, should be over at BlueSky moaning with the other dummycrats
The trend line is the issue, and Obama used it to win re-election. You don’t need everything at 100%. Remember “It’s Morning In America”? Morning is sufficient.
What about the thousands that were closed?
Some should be available.
coal mines already reopening!! Hiring signs up all over … take the federal buildings that nobody is at and retool them. Easy
Not true for all factories.
My business manufactures parts that are similar to high dollar electrical components, but at a lower cost. Many of these more expensive components come from overseas, including Germany, Japan and others on the tariff list.
I am getting a flood of orders currently and am ramping up quickly. I could go up tenfold this year if I got this orders with aggressive scheduling. Even more if needed.
WOOHOO!!!! 🇺🇸
I agree this will take time, but balancing trade flows is step one..
This alone will solve many problems.
We are Americans! Research the number of Bombers produced during WW11, in record time with much less technology Head up, eyes forward!.
I suggest you use manners even if you disagree. It’s the courtesy we extend other Treepers.
Not true!
I have worked on many factory builds and expansions that have been fast paced to completion.
When the principle wants it done it gets done!
No. Many options.
Ain’t happening, that whole steal thing. Nope
Very apt pseudonym.
He is in the process of commiting premeditated murder….
Of Globalism.
The cancerous beast and its attendant proponents are being taken down, one Trumpian action at a time.
An excellent explanation…

Hahaha!!!
Edgy, WSB. 👍🏻
All of a sudden it hits me why the Panda is also Pooh.
His land is populated with Eeyores…
Sweet, steph!!!!!
LOL, Betsy!
“He is in the process of committing premeditated murder….”
Perfect and accurate description! I add it’s a LONG OVERDUE reckoning with the globalists.
The right man for the right time, Nerd 👍🏻
Scarlet Pimpernel .👍
Concern noted
He could find the cure for cancer and they would still hate him.
Waking up every day with the concern of “how will they hate Trump?” is a waste of time. They always hate Trump and will never stop hating Trump.
They’re just not that into him. And I can live with that.
Oh they’re into him, all right.
That’s not indifference that they evince.
Would that it were! His life wouldn’t be as difficult.
Their hate energizes him.
…- Matter of fact, it’s *All* projection: – They hate themselves, first and foremost…
Tailored tariffs and a pause would ALWAYS have been Trump’s plan. Trump is negotiating publicly. For those countries who cooperate, they will get tailored tariffs. For those countries who retaliate, they will get FAFO rates. And PDJT isn’t only introducing tariffs for $, he is simultaneously introducing tariffs to fight and break up the deep state (and cause the media to expose their cheer leading and BS, yet again).
Another unknown; is Xi Jinping fighting his own deep state? Massive tariffs against the CCP is a great weapon.
Respectfully, I disagree with your conclusions. China is going to be on the their economic back foot even faster than in his first term despite their violating the trade agreements they signed up to during his first term.
Rest assured 47 is being taken quite seriously by numerous countries. If I understand what transpired today, those countries that want to sit down and reach some accord on tariffs etc. had theirs lowered (10%?). Do not retaliate and things get better. Retaliate and get punched hard (Ex. China).
As for the left, Note that they don’t address the real elements and actions of governing and making things better. All they do is seize every opportunity to try to weaken the President. Who cares? They have no game, no ideas, only overregulation, Lawfare, judicial overreach, fraud, and other nefarious freedom crushing crap in their “toolkit”. They also foment and encourage violence across the country. Unacceptable. They are infused with hate, envy, and have no blinkin’ idea how to govern in a free enterprise, capitalist country.
Never confuse activity with real accomplishment ( That does positive things for the country as a whole). Trump gets it. The Democratic Party and its supporters do not.
You’re clutching pearls over MSM stories about Trump? Is this new to you?
Right now Democrats are seen as advocating for China with all there expertise of the economy. They can keep saying what ever they want, but their protection of China says a lot.
The varying rates prove his cognitive ability. He thought intently about each nation and considered all the factors.
Besides, we don’t care what they say anymore. It’s all garbage.
Listen to Secretary Bessent’s explanation over and over and over again until you understanding his comments on PT’s leverage and reference to art of the deal. I don’t think you grasp what he said, just like the legacy media won’t grasp it either.
President Trump Won!!!!
Not that this crowd need to be told but “47 is not sticking with the plan of big permanent tariffs on every country” is silly.
“the plan” was never some neo-isolationist routine. Trump said quite clearly when campaigning, in the runup to the tariff announcement, and all this week that we are not going to be taken advantage of any longer. No more free entry for country X stuff, and they virtually or totally block what we make.
If country X wants to make a fair deal ***which means we can create things here and sell fairly*** then barring any other cause there’s no reason why to put a wall up. So, when they lined up to get someone on our side to pick up the phone and schedule a visit, it’s not “herky jerky” but Exactly What He Always Said.
It’s the left and RINO types that make up a hateful story about Trump and then try to attack him when he doesn’t fall into the fake definition they’ve made. If that game still worked he wouldn’t be President.
I disagree. It’s not herky jerky, it’s rope a dope.
You’re not getting it ! Every country in the would is now paying 10% like idiots in America are saying $3 a gallon gas is a good thing ! It was 0% 1 month ago ! REMEMBER?
You’re not getting it ! Every country in the world is now paying 10% ! Minimum! like idiots in America are saying $3 a gallon gas is a good thing ! It was 0% 1 month ago ! REMEMBER? China went from being President of the United States to now being a January 6th protester ! Get it ?
Eggs are now $1.99 a doz

Dave Portnoy says he’d ‘absolutely’ vote for Dems in midterms if Trump continues to rattle economy
Amazing what money does to people! He made it big but wants the YOU not to. He is not a SMART person! Like PDJT would say HE’s a STUPID PERSON!
Because of guys like Portnoy, that’s why they put directions on pizza boxes…
Are you still here?
Like PDJT says Mark is a STUPID person! Why are you here on this site? Obviously, you are here to show your ignorance to all!
You think maybe he’s being paid to post this stuff? lol
Just here to see what the Trump cult is writing about today.
You all never disappoint with the laughs.
Ohhhhhhh Mark. Winnimins just don’t sit well with you, do they? How about you take your wife, Karen I’m sure is her name, and go see a movie or something. Snow White perhaps. Take a break. Walk away from the keybord. It’ll be okay.
If not a movie how about the beach and pound sand.
You know why you said “I never thought I would say this?”
It’s because you never think, period!
What’s stupid? He didn’t like what happened, and neither did a lot of other people. Nobody even knew what was going on nor were they presented with a clear explanation.
The truth is the people who gave honest feedback and warned about the dangers forced Trump into a much better strategy that is more likely to achieve goals that benefit America.
Or if you are MAGA, you could read his tweet He was being a bit coy in what you chose to quote, but the tweet gives the facts.
See Sundance’s article today but here’s the tweet:
Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.
Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” [SOURCE]
IMO he was going for this all along. Plus they need the time to work with all the countries who want to deal.
Australia’s Allahbanese hasnt called. When asked he said he “had people dealing with it”
Meanwhile Xi makes overtures to Allahbanese aka “Handsome Boy” (Xi’s own word!)
IMO ALLAHBANESE IS UGLY INSIDE AND OUT.

…- When you find yourself in injun territory, *Deep* behind enemy lines, ‘prolly not a good idea to send up signal flares, willy-nilly, and telegraph your position, ya think?…
Portnoy needs to stick to critquing pizza… although who cares what he thinks or likes!
Doesn’t he throw away $20,000 at a time on sports bets and lose?. I don’t take his fear of losing money with any credence.
Anyone who can vote for darkness and lies is sick in the heart. Let him.
Pray for him. Pray for all of them.
‘Tis the season for penance and returning to God and God wishes everyone to return to Him.
and who is Dave Portnoy? Never heard of this dude so he can’t be to well-known.
That guy is a clown. I knew he was full of sh!t when he was pushing for recreational cannabis in Florida that would have expanded the horrible Vertical Integration Cartel that was created when Big pHarma was allowed to write the Florida Medical Cannabis Amendment through their fully funded proxy The Partnership To End Addiction formerly known as The Partnership For A Drug Free America based in St. Pete. (Kinda funny Big pHarma would have a non profit with “drug free” in the title hence the name change).
No one should be pushing weed for anything as long as it’s Schedule 1.
…- Bartool…
(…- *Not* a typo…)
He’s annoying to begin with. Being a disconnected New Florida Highroller with a platform to spew backassward nonsense doesn’t help the situation.
I wish he’d throw his back out sportfishing to have some time to read CTH and get his small mind right.
So the guy sitting on a barstool is criticizing the man sitting behind the Resolute Desk.
😆
With countries around the world sending trade delegations to the US to negotiate new bi-lateral trade agreements with the US (and perhaps more that just trade as Trump has said these meetings will be “one stop shopping”), I wonder how much of the marketplace accessibility in those countries will China lose as US goods displace Chinese goods and the US potentially acquires other benefits, as well? While tariffs are certainly powerful, the fact that Trump is renegotiating virtually all of our bi-lateral trade agreements means the Chinese could lose a vast amount of worldwide marketplace accessibility and that would hurt China much more than the tariffs. This may be the real reason behind the tariff war — renegotiate bi-lateral arrangements and thereby cut China’s marketplace accessibility throughout the world.
Well, that would be the Marxist take, yes.
We underestimate China at our own peril.
China’s GDP in 1985 was about $293 billion, the US was $4.4 Trillion. Today: US $28T, China $18T. The greatest economic miracle in the history of the world and what do our comments say: “I wonder if it could trigger regime change in China” “I think China will attack Taiwan” and such like. Tariffs on China will hurt, they have a whopping 14% of their foreign trade with the USA. It’s time for us to look at the some fundamentals.
Over the last 30 years, China has invested billions of dollars in their supply chains, investing in mines, railroads, shipping, ports, etc., both domestically, and in foreign lands.
What has the USA invested in over the same time period? TRILLIONS in regime change, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, War on Terror, Ukraine, ad nauseam. Don’t forget, the Fed pumped great liquidity into the stock market for the trillionaires!!
China has invested in helping other countries, we have invested in destroying other countries.
China has invested in their industrial capacity, we have invested hundreds of billions in climate change, homelessness, illegal drugs, and alcohol abuse.
The solution to this small cross section of our problems is to set China up as the Boogeyman? I don’t think that is the answer.
We have met the enemy and he is us.
We need to figure out our problems and solve them, not blame them on someone else.
I think Trump and his administration have a pretty good handle on what the problem is and are in the process of fixing what they can. Your assumption that you have some better insight to what needs to be done and want to minimize the danger of Chinese Communist party makes me laugh. I guess I will just call you comrade from now on.
You couldn’t have proved my point better.
We seem to take much more glee in name calling than at problem solving. In fact, (and I read it again to make sure,) I made no mention of the Communist Party in China or anywhere else. The fact that the Chinese have worked hard and are now in position to dominate a lot of the world marketplace is a testament to their hard work, not our name calling.
MA, I appreciate thoughtful analyses. We don’t see enough of that in today’s world where “we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.” [JFK 11 June 1962 speech at Yale] Name calling (on-line viciousness) is to be expected: “Reasoning will never make a Man correct an ill Opinion, which by Reasoning he never acquired: For in the Course of Things, Men always grow vicious before they become Unbelievers.” [J. Swift, Letter to a Young Gentleman Lately enter’d into Holy Orders, 1721.].
hard work my arse … they are where they are because of “most favored nation” … sold out by OUR OWN. EFF em….
With all due respect, you’re conveniently omitting all the intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers that have occurred (particularly within the last 25 years). They’ve benefited from factors far more significant than simply “hard work.”
“Your assumption that you have some better insight to what needs to be done and want to minimize the danger of Chinese Communist party makes me laugh.” Your remark suggests to me that you think government knows best: was Trump’s “15 days to Slow the Spread” (March 2020) government knowing best? MA is offering an insight which ought to be considered. Take issue with specifics and offer counterarguments, but please don’t dismiss thoughtful offerings.
I will have to say that I am skeptical of claims of an honest economic miracle.
It was not that many years ago that similar language was used to describe the USSR.
Time will tell.

I have changed some of my thinking about China since I started reading his articles. Tough for an old dog to learn new tricks, but it can be done.
But don’t make the mistake of thinking China or its policies under Communism are in any way benevolent, especially in its investments in other countries. It is all about self-interest & power.
It is all about self-interest & power.
You name one foreign investment the USA has made that wasn’t in our self interest? SHEESH – MAGA is all about America First. DJT has said himself other countries should be doing their business for their own self interest. I am sure Xi has a MCGA hat he’ll sell you if you donate to his re-election campaign. (He might even be selling watches and sneakers!!!)
I don’t know about honesty, but their trains and airports and subway systems are better than ours, on average. Very impressive. They move vast crowds of people with incredible efficiency, and they are all pretty new.
Our average citizen standard of living is much higher though.
OTOH, they do not have drug addicts, or any homeless or beggars on any big city streets, unlike us.
and you know who paid for all of that … the US taxpayers shouldered most of that burden. I don’t like them don’t care what happens to them. Period.
“the US taxpayers shouldered most of that burden.”
And who was it, precisely, who arranged that wvgal’?…
…- Imma go and jump on in here because this is an interesting thread and you raised excellent points, wvgal’…
…- First of all, the CCP can all go and burn in hell (I’m not even going to conclude with the usual “for all I care” bit… – They *Absolutely Should* all burn in hell.) – But marcus aurelius makes a valid point, although I do not for one second believe China’s economic miracle was achieved solely by their own merit and effort… (- Check out, eg: Rockerfeller’s bankrolling/grooming of Mao…)
…- Here’s the thing: – The construct known as ‘China’ is merely *One Node* in a transnational, supranational network of criminal conspiracy of the most heinous sort, that appears now as a cult, now as a mafia, now as a terrorist organization, like SPECTER in the James Bond flicks (only, if James Bond was actually a member of SPECTER, himself…), that currently has the *Entire World* by the short-and-curlies…
…- Neither Deng Jiaoping nor Hu Jintao marched on over, back in the ’90’s/’00’s, and held the USA at collective gunpoint, and ordered the creation of the Rustbelt, but then, clearly, from your comments you know that already…
…- Eyes on the prize, and don’t let that squirrel over there distract you: – It is the ‘power(s) behind the throne’ that are the true and *Ultimate* enemy here (for whom, BTW, ol’ Uncle Klaus of the WEF is merely an errand boy)…
…- What they are very fond of doing is setting up little petri-dish experiments here-and-there, and around the world, in order to trial-run their plans: – Communist China is one such petri dish as is Cartelized Latin America… – Australia and New Zealand during ‘Event Covid’ were another pair of petri dishes as is the post-industrialized, welfarized, fentanylized, current-year United States of America…
…- What they want, to be sure, is *Nothing Less Than* One-World, Global-Gulag, *Literal* Hell on Earth…
…- Eyes on the prize, Treeps… – *Eyes On The Prize*.
…- Or, TLDR:…
“The issue which has swept down the centuries and which will have to be fought sooner or later is the people versus the banks.”
Lord Acton
TO be honest-IMO- the only good Communist is a dead one. They have caused so much evil in the world
…- What’re they up to by now?… – A hundred-plus *Million* bodycount, at this point?…
…- Like I said: – Petri dishes… – It’s all just some sick, twisted experiment to them.
Because they kill them and harvest their organs. They have roving mobile ambulance hospitals which do that
hahaha …. too funny
Didn’t you listen to Pelosi and Schumer and Hillary…………..all condeming China for raping the USA on trade? Wow
Really? Raping the USA on trade? President Xi personally come down and make your big self go down and buy all that Chinese junk down at Walmart?
basically they screwed the American worker by closing all the factories…outsourcing it used to be called!!! Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Shumer, Hillary Clinton … all called them OUT. But of course you won’t see that. They deserve to sink in the ocean and never recoup. President Xi is a communist pig and should be tried for numerous crimes against humanity.
and if you know it all…take up the mantle and run for President next term!!!
and you know who made them RICH … we the American taxpayers. I wish China would fall in the ocean. ALL OF THEM
Don’t buy anything that originates there going forward. It will be more toxic than ever if not intentionally laced with fentanyl. That is what I keep coming back to in my mind.

If anything … the President’s 90-Day “tailored” pause has fully exposed the Wall Street Whales as resisting the President’s Traiff effort by ARTIFICIALLY wagging the Markets as part of their pump and dump scam to preserve their profits at the same time.
Yup. Even the overnight 10s bond spike is apparently due to *10 Or Fewer* hedge funds doing forced unwinds of overleveraged basis pair trades… – Kinda like the City of London taking a collective dump all over the freshman Liz Truss administration, here in the UK back in ’22, with Gilts.

Fed finaced by tarriffs
Will we break china, and settle into comfort zone level of tarrifs?
Tarriffs and a flat tax or sales tax?
Canada and Europe should still be getting their higher tariffs because they retaliated against the US.
Yes. All Canada had to do was work to stop the fentanyl. Although if China stopped shipping through Canada that problem would take care of itself, no?
The 10% base remains.
The 25% vs auto’s remains.
The tariffs on Steel and Aluminum remains.
There are other tailored tariffs not discussed.
There is nothing in the announcement that says if the EU or an EU member or Canada does something stupid, there will not be a tailored response.

America is forging a new path, leading with strength and resolve toward a prosperous future.
Literally, Trump blinked. If tariffs are going to be a mere negotiating tool for multiple bilateral trade agreements, there will be little resources and stability for domestic producers to fill in gaps of trade or for capital to move into the US to create new production. The country needs a firm protectionist system based on what the made America great, that being the historical American system which operated from 1790-1975. Anything less is political theatre and self interested aggrandizement.
I made a post yesterday about this exact issue, particularly the conflicting messaging. I am very concerned about a strategy that includes a deal with China, because I know that it won’t work. There appear to be two different factions within the White House (Navarro vs. Other Cabinet Officials).
This was my post:
Realistically, what deal can you make with China that’s actually good for us? We have a $300 billion trade deficit, and with them stealing all of our manufacturing, how do you remedy that? Their best talent is lying, cheating, and stealing, and anything they promise, they’ll renege on it like they always do. When I hear Peter Navarro speak, the impression I get is that he wants to keep tariffs high and punitive, especially on China. We then use those tariffs as an ongoing revenue source and at the same time invest in manufacturing here. He seems to lean heavily protectionist on the Asian countries (likely to counteract the allure of cheap labor) , which I love. There is nothing I support more than American ingenuity.
There seems to be an opposing faction within the White House that wants to do individual trade deals that would apparently lower the tariffs. I can technically see this strategy working, as long as you keep tariffs high on China. This would cause an exodus of manufacturers, as they head to more favorable countries (ie. Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, etc). What I don’t like with this strategy is that they won’t come back to America. They’ll head to the next best option for cheap, slave labor. If you make a deal with China, similar to the other Asian countries, I don’t see how this solves anything. Sleazy business will be happy, China will return to deception, and the status quo will continue. I don’t like the Chinese government, I don’t trust the Chinese government, and I don’t want to do business with the Chinese government.
if they do that Trump will tariff the nation they go to. Do you think Donald Trump is stupid????
Did I say he was stupid? It has nothing to do with intelligence, it has to do with reality. Let’s use Vietnam, for example. I’m sorry to inform you, but once they sign a trade deal, he’s not going to do anything. That’s just reality. The optics of reneging on the agreement would not be good. If the tariffs are higher on China, it’s going to cause companies to shift their production to Vietnam or some other Asian sweat shop. The only way to avoid that would be to have high tariffs. Our companies are as sleazy as they come. They want cheap labor and cheap goods. They couldn’t care less about the citizens of our country.
You’re beginning to get at the root of the problem, Chris:…
“…it’s going to cause companies to shift their production to…”
…- The companies are the problem… – More specifically the majority *Institutional* shareholders of those companies: – The commercial banks (JP Morgue, Teh Vampire Squid (Goldman Sucks), Douche Bank), Blackrock, Vanguard, State Street, et al… – *Even More* specifically *Their* majority shareholders, whose names and faces we likely don’t even know…
…- Those assclowns gad about ‘Nation-shopping’, in the manner you just described, in much the same way Dem activists gad about Judge-shopping, in a never-ending race to the bottom for alla the rest of a held-hostage mankind…
…- Dig out the root, problem solved…
“The issue which has swept down the centuries and which will have to be fought sooner or later is the people versus the banks.”
Lord Acton
I agree. China was admitted into the WTO in spite of being communist hoping it may become more capitalist or democratic. This hasn’t happened. Instead we have a rich communist bully.
They are flooding our country with substandard, in some cases dangerous products, inferior to American standards and getting rich doing it. They flood our country with fentanyl killing thousands each month.
Enough already. We can, must and will return quality manufacturing back to the U.S.
Yes. China is THE EXISTENTIAL THREAT. We must realize that the US society is even more infiltrated by Chinese influence than the US was by Soviet influence during and just after WWII. Worse, the Chinese have material influence the Soviets never had. On the other hand, the Chinese are so very obviously “Chinese.” It might be been easy for some Anglo-Protestant Ivy League guy to listen to Alger Hiss cuz the Prols needed help. But, Swallwell is no Alger Hiss, and no Anglo-American is really gonna trust such an obvious alien civilization cuz principles. Nope, they’ll do it for cold hard cash and know they are traitors. So, we might roll them back quicker.
It must be done. China has a population that is 99% native, to our 75-80% native. In turn, it can rely upon an even larger loyal population than we can and they already have population four times larger. The Chinese steal, seduce, transfer, and defraud technologies, patents, new breakthroughs, records, etc on a vast scale. They have every research paper and scientific investigation written by every academic, scientist, research from the end of WWII to the 1990s. They have stolen or bought the majority of newer research. In turn, they have the personal identity information, biography, family records of the aforementioned. They probably even habe their genetic information. Thats alot of information they can leverage with and analyze and execute plans and operations against. Theyve done the same thing to entire companies at the corporate level.
China must be isolated like we did the USSR. We need an international trade regime with our allies which jointly forbids the transfer of information, technologies, personnel, education exchanges, etc with the Chinese. I doubt but perhaps less than my fingers are there people in government who even remember the name of such organizations and the structure of such regimes from the Cold War era; even I can’t remember the name off the top of my head anymore. There is alot more Trump Admin needs to be doing.
I think we already know China will always go the “negotiate in good faith” & execute the trade deal in bad faith. Fentanyl is a good example–they agreed to stop the flow of fentanyl to the U S. & continued to do so anyway–even stepping the flow up by moving it thru Mexico & the cartels. Likewise, they dumped their products in countries like Vietnam & “manufactured” goods under those countries’ companies to avoid U.S. tariffs. It’s why Trump put tariffs on islands occupied by penguins. I trust Trump to be smarter than most of his WH staff &, for sure, Congress. And he’s been absolutely correct on China for decades.
Chris, I agree, Navarro v Financiers, Chinese crooks, Asian labor threat, etc.
Trump likes to often play Celebrity Apprentice with his underlinings. But, I didn’t think this was happening with Navarro v Financiers. I honestly believed and still tend to believe that those two sides are in broad agreements on changing the Global economic regime. Instead of being a Celebrity apprentice match, I estimate this debate surrounds geopolitical questions and reserve currency vulnerabilities.
I believe there is a threat the Chinese would try to pull various countries into their orbit over the protectionist trade barrier issues. The Belt and Road Initiative is a means for pulling wayward counties out of American orbit thru trade infrastructure. Simultaneously, the threat of disgruntled and angry capitalists and to sink American finances thru the bond market is a real one.
The combination of the two above likely played a major role in debates inside the Trump Administration. Its entirely possible they got new Intel on the financial front that spooked them into leaning into the Trump Financier coalition’s argument. In general I oppose this and believe full steam ahead and damn the torpedoes is the way to go. But, I recognize there are unknown intel on the financial markets I am not privy too.
I am just not happy with their being a lack of a more sophisticated roll out of a new American Protectionist regime than has been done. I realize that with the resistance so far from China, foreign nations, domestic and foreign capital, reducing tarrif’s down to 10% is leaving precious little room to increase them sufficiently to restart American manufactures and technologies. Thank you for the response.
you are literally stupid.
What a nasty response to the poster. He gave you his perspective, you don’t have to be rude.
President Trump didn’t blink. Read his tweet, which you can see in the link below. Trying to say he blinked is beyond ridiculous.
https://theconservativetreehouse.com/blog/2025/04/09/president-trump-raises-chinese-tariff-rate-to-125-triggers-90-day-pause-and-baseline-10-for-all-other-nations/
Whether he thought in his head that he blinked or not, the world perceived that he blinked. Reducing down to 10% is better than reducing to status ante. But, its so marginal given the trade barriers of the other countries as to do very little.
Instead of creating a new trade regime based around protectionism, Trump appears to be creating a new geopolitical alliance to be structured around New trade agreements. This appears to be a long drawn out process of trade negotiation as existed during the 70s and 80s whicj was a period preparing us to go off the cliffs starting with NAFTA. In short, this is wind down of GATT to be restructured under a different series of trade alliances.
In turn, if this takes a similar period of time to create, even if it is created toward a real protectionist regime, I will be dead before we restore an America First Trade policy and so will the country. We didn’t put 10 years of blood, sweat, and tears into electing Trump to piecemeal renegotiate 75-100 trade deals. I could be wrong but I don’t think Trump Admin has a real long term strategy of re establishing the American System of Economics that existed between 1790-1975. This is the moment to do it though. So, why blink?
I don’t think President Trump “blinked.” I think he intelligently made a great strategic move with regard to the 90 day pause.
I’ve read 75 countries are ready to negotiate. I expect these negotiations will occur within the 90 days, and in the meantime a 10% tariff is a great idea.
Long term his intent is to eliminate our balance of trade deficits, wealth leaving this country.
So happy to see a president standing up for the U.S. for a change.
Yep They literally CRAWLING to negotiate. Well screw them all Let them stew
And here I thought I was going to have to read all the pages to find the first “Trump blinked” assertion…
He did NOT BLINK
This was the plan all along. He played them like fiddle

God I love this women
Now that’s believable…to an extent., but far from being applicable to All of those anti-Trump RINOs.
No the majority of Uniparty hacks are the ones who have grifted & personally profited from the Democrat scams for decades; who never rejected Democrat nominees; who may or may not have ever even authored “sternly worded letters” re. DemoRat malfeasance.
They just quietly go along and keep their heads down, rarely ever publicly admonishing DemoRats or publicly supporting Republican conservatives, especially Donald J. Trump. They sometimes vote with Democrats if asked to (or paid to) due to close votes on low-profile legislation, but generally they’re allowed to vote with Republicans on most bills.
Then, at campaign time, they put their conservative mask back on and pretend to be concerned about their constituents.
Yep
go deeper….Do you know why every grassroots MAGA candidate has been effectively blocked from higher office since 2020?
HINT:
Sundance explained that one long ago. The GOP state clubs are notoriously closed to newcomers. They do everything within their considerable power and influence to shove those challengers to the side, including unethical smear tactics, and vote manipulation if the polls are super close just before election day.
They’ll even run a 3rd and 4th fake R candidate (primaries) who looks nearly as good as the MAGA challenger but is secretly beholden to the Big Club, in order to split off as many of. the challengers votes as possible.
It’s all about power and the money that power attracts.
When Trump tells you elections are rigged, do you really think that is what hes referring to?
I said since 2020.
Heres another HINT:
lol
I suggest you simply state the points you’re trying to make instead of playing 20 questions.
If you still dont get it, I dont see the point
I’ll repeat it for you – I suggest you simply state the points you’re trying to make instead of playing 20 questions.
I don’t come here to play games. My time is valuable.
Thanks. It gets old.
Look at the picture. Although your examples such as illusion of choice are problematic, it is not what installed Herman Munster into the US Senate. The majority of people did not vote Fetterman any more then they voted for the fake President.
A mix of the following election/voter fraud tactics is what did it:
Dirty Voter Rolls
Electronic Machine Manipulation
Voter ID
Mail-In Voting
Early Voting
Ballot Harvesting
Ballot Drop Boxing
Election Day now Election Month
No Chain Of Custody
I thought we understood this already. If you didnt then I apologize for not taking the time to elaborate. but it does get old having to repeat this stuff after all this time.
Yes most of us have understood the multiple vectors of fraud perpetrated to steal elections.
Most of that was revealed to the electorate after the 2020 general election prompted hundreds of people to investigate WTF happened. There have been extensive articles here plus hundreds of comments with more links to findings withheld by the media.
Independent reporting via social media, especially newly created social media that was not subject to extensive censorship as the legacy social media had become, exposed explicit details of fraud and methods, and how the data analysis simply did not support Biden winning as was claimed.
Instead of the circuitous riddles that are unclear to some of us as to your specific line of thinking, you might consider simply commenting to add all the other reasons you believe Republicans lose elections. I don’t think anyone including myself would have disagreed.
However I stand by my original reply since Sundance has described explicitly how the GOP scammed the Tea Party candidates in Republican primaries back in 2010 and 2012.
They’ve used the same tactics against MAGA challengers in 2016 and forward. Ballot fraud wasn’t made easy until 2020 and the use of mail-in ballots becoming widespread.
Fraudulent voter roles and voting machine programming with algorithms was also necessary to support the increased amount of mail in ballots and the manipulated numbers coming from the machines.
There were no mass mail in ballots in 2016 my friend. Its critical that we all understand what the purpose of the fake pandemic was for….. NEW Normal started in 2020. However, I assume you believe the pandemic was real which does have a lot to do with the inability to go deeper .
Look at the picture…NEW normal.
“Ballot fraud wasn’t made easy until 2020 and the use of mail-in ballots becoming widespread.”
Maybe you didn’t read that part of my reply.
We actually agree, but you continue to argue. Bless your heart.

Headline: Breitbart Business Digest: Trump Outmaneuvers Markets, Allies, and China in One Day
Subheading: Whiplash: Markets Rally as Trump’s Tariff Strategy Becomes Clear
The article does a better-than-average job of defending the President’s strategy – that he likely had planned all along! NOT a sudden softening / change of heart due to media & WallStreet whining!

“The trade corridor in question is officially called the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), but it is better understood through a term that I helped introduce: the New Golden Road. Unlike China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which is billed as a revival of the old Silk Road, the New Golden Road is a revival of a much older network of trade and commerce. Long before modern geopolitics, this route linked India to the Mediterranean world, carrying goods, ideas, and cultural influence across an ancient superhighway of trade.”
The Golden Road Trump Should Take
Reviving a forgotten Roman and Indian trade route could contain China, unite America’s allies, and reshape the global order.

You can plug any country you want and see the numbers. Be mindful of when the Council On Foreign Relations pushed and passed NAFTA, created the WTO, and when Clinton lobbied as partial payment for the ChinaGate treason, for China to gain membership in the WTO over many member nations objections.

It occurs to me that the absolute worse thing that could happen to the core of globalism would be implosion of the CCP
Imagine that, and then think about how Trump takez every opportunity to support Xi THE MAN…
What happens when you isolate a bully? You automatically empower the intimidated, which then exposes the corrupt globalist lackeys acting as facilitators…GATES, Zuck, Schmidt, Bourla, FAUCI….KERRY….triggered WTFers clowning on Capitol Hill today (lol) as meek and mild Greer maintained his composure…the freakout…I’d consider the screamer a legit candidate for psych eval/72hr hold
And, I think that the American press will be startled to discover that these “75 negotiations” are secret.
If you have never read The Art of the Deal cover to cover, then go buy a copy and do so now.
Maybe a District Court Judge can rule that the negotiations MUST be public.////
Liberals are desperately trying to spin this as President Trump folding. You can only laugh at their ignorance.
you knew that would happen.

Stock market posts third biggest gain in post-WWII history on Trump’s tariff about-face
https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/09/stock-market-posts-third-biggest-gain-in-post-wwii-history-on-trumps-tariff-about-face.html
Good timing for the announcement. Like I wrote the other day, him calling people “stupid” was not a good look. (I know it was about a reporter’s question, but the reporter’s question was not stupid.)
Like it or not, a fair number of people really do invest for retirement in the stock market, whether through an employer 401K or their own savings. It seems like they let a little panic set in for “our trading partners”, but there is a point at which if the Dow goes too low, bad things start to happen.
So they make this announcement and get a Dow rebound. That helps calm savers…many of whom were cashing out their 401K’s locking in their losses AND setting them up for big penalties later. Never underestimate how bad people are with money.
While the 90-day pause will be portrayed as a reward for countries who didn’t retaliate, I suspect the prime motivation was to calm the markets. That’s the “yippy” people Trump was talking about.
Remember, when you INVEST, you’re giving a company money that you believe they will use wisely to grow their business. If they do, and the company’s revenues grow, you get a dividend as a share holder (most investors like us just reinvest the dividends), plus you get a higher share price and your portfolio grows in value.
It’s not a lot different than fixing up your own home (investing) to increase your future resale value (profits) so you get more when you sell.
But the opposite is also true. If you take tons of cash out of your home, and direct it to other things, your house will fall apart from disrepair, its value will fall. And worse, you might have taken on more debt. That means less profit when you sell. Or you lose the house entirely because you’re under water.
For companies, when investors flee, companies collapse. The Dow is just an aggregation of share prices across companies. If they all lose trillions in investment, those companies will collapse. Total economic collapse IS NOT AN OPTION.
If Coca Cola implodes, even the guys who work there who don’t have 401K’s lose their jobs. It’s not about “protecting Wall Street”. It’s about ensuring we don’t crash the economy.
Trump implied in an interview recently that there is no floor to how much he’d let the market fall. The guy has nerves of steel to say that because there very likely IS a floor. He just hoped countries would beg for trade deals before we reached it.
If you left your money alone, good thinkin’. As things rebound, consider carefully rebalancing to reduce your exposure, but do it in a way that doesn’t lock in massive losses.
I don’t put money in a 401K any more. My wife still does. Although I lose out on the employer matching (free money), I’m a Dave Ramsey disciple, so my focus is on debt reduction – paying down the mortgage. A house the bank can’t take away is more valuable to me as I get older.
I actually disagree with you. I also thought it was a stupid question from your typical stupid reporter. We were nowhere near the point where “bad things start to happen.”
I don’t mid disagreement. Their reaction today is a sign that they let it go on as long as they could without going into freefall.
In a weird way it reminds me of the end of “Trading Places”. They knew there would be a market reaction, and a trade partner reaction. They let that belief take hold (high tariffs). The markets moved bigly downward. Trading partners, like the excited OJ traders buying at $1.42, frantically called trying to get in on the negotiations expecting the price to go up higher.
When enough trading partners did, Trump announced the pause. The market recovers, and we get on with negotiations. In the movie, panicked buyers of inflated OJ prices were willing to cut their losses agreeing to sell to Winthrop and Valentine low price contracts. Winthrop and Valentine sold futures at 1.42 and bought at 0.29. They become millionaires because the low to high is extreme.
Buy low, sell high. We’re not buying high tariffs. We’re buying low tariffs by convincing trading partners they’re holding high tariff futures. The country collects the difference because we gain something more valuable than tariff money: market access.
But I’ll bet $20 they had a floor they didn’t want to get below. It’s bad enough that retirees and Main Street investors were cashing out 401K’s. We don’t need stock traders jumping off of rooftops.
I dont know. I heard the bond market was blowing up and that is why Trump pivoted
Why did the bond market blow up?
National panic about the Dow led investors to “safe haven” investments like bonds. There was a massive jump in yields.
A lot of institutional investors have their accounts on autopilot. If there’s a stock market correction, money flows out of stocks and into bonds. That outflow accelerates the selloff, leading to even more bond purchases.
Suddenly the government is faced with an increase in interest payments. We can’t afford what we’re paying already. Trump had to hit pause to avoid a complete meltdown.
stupid question from a stupid reporter. Trump knows what he is doing
It wasn’t a stupid question. It was a fair question. The issue he had with it was that it forced him to do even more brinksmanship which added to the potential Dow sell off.
A 30-40% correction like we saw during COVID would have required a massive infusion of cash from the Fed THAT WE DON’T HAVE. You can only get that money by selling Treasuries, which other countries can refuse to do.
He got what he needed without tanking the market and destroying my mom’s retirement savings.
It was a pretty stupid question. Even if the market had tanked, it would have recovered. Your mom’s retirement savings would only have been destroyed if she sold her positions.
No, it’s not. You have zero ability to know that what you claim is true, first of all. You’re basing it off a set of rules and assumptions that will no longer exist.
And try not to be so flippant, and your comment is flippant. If I spent 50 years saving and have $100,000 in the stock market to help in retirement, I’ve got 3-5 years of retirement if I skimp and lean on social security. If my $100,000 is now $70,000, I am f&ucked.
You write “it’ll come back” like that’s a lock and hey we have 30 years. Old people DO NOT.
My point remains. There was a floor to the Dow correction the President did not want to fall below.
It’s easy for you to write that because it’s not your money. If you’re 82 and living off your savings, losing 20-30% is a catastrophe.
They had to hit pause before people started jumping off buildings.
If someone is in as precarious a position as you describe, they should not be in the stock market at all.
They should be in bonds or gold or both. They should be concentrating on preserving principal rather than growth.
But I am definitely not saying to sell now and lock in these loses! After it goes back up, then they should rethink their risk level.
IMHO, it will go back up and reach new highs once these new world trade arrangements take hold, and we start seeing results from the Trump Great New Deal.
Again, your point is IRRELEVANT. Millions of people in this country started doing “dollar cost averaging” investing in the stock market 30-40 years ago. These are not gamblers. These are people with IRAs. Why did they do that? Because they knew social security probably wouldn’t be around or enough to live on if it survived.
Now they’re either retired or on the cusp, and their IRA might lose 30%? That’s madness. There’s no time to recover if you’re 75.
It’s a cop out to say they shouldn’t have invested because it relieves you of responsibility for the consequences of playing brinksmanship games with other people’s money.
You guys are ALL making my point for me without realizing.
I truly believe President Trump can and will completely destroy China.
I don’t think he’s out to destroy China, just the CCP.
I’m now imagining a future where there is reunification of Taiwan with China… as a unified Republic of free peoples.
I hate to say it, but I think to destroy the CCP you have to inflict serious economic pain on China as a whole. Having them in a complete economic tailspin would be ideal. Even with a representative form of government, I think that China will continue to be a problem. We need a break from them.
soooo it will be in not so diostant future -UNITED KOREA……watch….
My prediction too.
Trump will be to China as Reagan was to the Soviets.
Not that I have any proof of course.
CCP…. he will do it as Ronnie destroyed Evil Empire…..he will be buddy with Xi in new non commie CHINA….
China …. FAFO
wonder what the chicoms are gonna do with all those container ships full of crap heading this way?eat the tariff or reroute the ships to europe.
If they want to go through the Panama Canal then they have to wait behind American ships who get to go FIRST and get to go for FREE.
I sat at the CYA black box today around lunch time and was just amazed.
Somehow the hedge fund managers who tried to short the markets got the memo that this was not working!!! They pushed the button to buy back after PT called the pause!!!! Just hysterical!!! Never seen a vertical upswing like this ever!
It is so obvious now that almost all countries have no recourse but to keep themselves going…ONLY…if they admit their earlier graft and change their ways with the USA.
I was only down 2% but have recovered 30% of that today.
Everyone, just keep holding on!
Looked like a mechanized rebound, IMHO.
I hope people at least recognize how absurd the posters here who were attacking anyone who criticized the previous strategy or recognized the harm look now.
