The first part of this announcement is clear, Chinese tariffs are now raised to 125% effective immediately. The latter part of this announcement is less clear; however, it appears that all other trading nations have their reciprocal tariffs lowered to 10% for a period of 90-days.

At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.
Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. I went into one of them back in early December and the line was around 20 people long and 2 cashiers. The line did not move for 15 minutes. I put my purchases down and left the store. They cannot compete with online stores. There is no need to have a physical store.

For any of us in Australia, we are hit with a minimum 10% Goods & Services Tax on imported items (for the most part) – on top of import duties, etc on larger items.
This GST is nominally collected at point of sale and reimbursed to the Australian Govt.
Note also that all businesses in Australia have to register for GST – it is a cumulative tax, increasing by 10% at each step along the way to the consumer [importer, wholesaler, retailer, business, (ALL with mark ups, plus additional freight & handling costs) and finally the consumer]- BUT only registered businesses can claim input tax credits – ordinary plebs are the end payers.
For 90 days, the USA will only charge 10% tariffs to those who are waiting in queue to Make a Deal. They can continue to charge whatever they have been charging but, my guess, is if they do that, then they will not be showing any good faith in actually wanting to have Fair Trade.
I believe that the smart countries should start lowering their tariffs and continue to lower their tariffs as they move towards the front of the line. That shows a good faith effort.

My husband is traveling in Japan. He was at a coffee shop and overheard some locals discussing the 90 days/125% tariffs on China.
They were lauding how brilliant President Trump is and saying how thankful they are he was fixing the world.
They were thrilled he was taking on China.
Sometimes I wonder…
I purchase a couple of particular items from a business in America on an ‘as needs’ basis.
They are trusted suppliers and a pleasure to do business with.
However, the items I purchase from them are made in China (to a specific standard) – thus I can purchase and have them landed at my door for between one quarter and one third of the cost of the same items as sold in Australia.
Even with a 125% Tariff, purchasing from the American suppliers would still be my preferred option as remaining economically viable.
I would expect that a similar US manufactured product would be far more expensive and of similar quality, so then it would become an option to again purchase from an Australian business (who, for the most part, charge like a raging bull).
I see the price variations between businesses here selling the exact same product and shake my head in frustration – from AUD 2.50 to AUD 18.50 Retail – and wonder who is ripping off whom – AND the items haven’t even been ‘rebranded’.
Go figure.
