The first part of this announcement is clear, Chinese tariffs are now raised to 125% effective immediately. The latter part of this announcement is less clear; however, it appears that all other trading nations have their reciprocal tariffs lowered to 10% for a period of 90-days.
“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.
Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” [SOURCE]
♦ Steel and Aluminum tariffs of 25% remain for all.
♦ Auto tariffs of 25% remain for all.
♦ Reciprocal tariffs 10% for all, 125% for China.

Big win for USA right here. Let Panda sit in the Corner alone.
The Panda dropped it’s masked and showed the entire world the Dragon. And PDJT just exposed it for all the world to see. He’s a genius.
Chyna is is between a rock and a very hard place.
They can talk tough, but any physical war is out of the question. That would put end to all trade with them and accelerate their decline.
Agree physucal war is not an option for China.
The ONLY option they have is opening their markets.
The Panda’s on Time-Out. No crayons. No video games. No juice box.
“China vows to fight to the end” in economic war with America.
The end just got nearer
The concept of “face” is very strong in China. There is no way they can be seen as losing face.
“The mandate from Heaven” is what XI is in jeopardy of losing….
DJT has been through h-e-l-l in
so many ways
so many times
These past ten years.
What are they gonna do, arrest him?
Put him on trial?
Impeach him?
Bankrupt him?
Defeat him politically?
Ruin his reputation?
Smear him?
Threaten him?
Kill him???????
The President is operating at a level I don’t think I’ve ever seen a leader do in my lifetime.
Amazing!!!
“The President is operating at a level I don’t think I’ve ever seen
a leader do in my lifetime.“He had 4 years of OJT and then 4 years to design, rehearse and execute his game plan (if X, then Y). His execution thus far has been almost flawless.
President Trump is in Almighty God’s Hands. God is blessing him. Thank You Holy, Heavenly Father. Please keep guiding, protecting and blessing President Trump.
AMEN!!
Correctamundo!!!
👍 👍 👍
Mandate from his ChiCom cronies, which in the PRC is basically the same thing.
Good point, 58Mike.
I’ve heard Jack Posobeic speak of that often. The mandate from Heaven resides in the supreme leader of the CCP for his lifetime (their “elections are fake)…
…until, suddenly, like flipping a switch, it doesn’t.
Those around him simply take him out with the trash and do what has to be done.
So China doesn’t lose face.
Xi does.
We are very likely to be looking at China’s Berlin-Wall-Fall moment.
It’s not a good look when the whole world sees Trump spanking them badly, either!
Trump won’t just let them agree anymore. They f-ed up! Now they have to bow down and kiss the ring.
Hard to save face when you’re bent over with your ass in the air! 😅
This will bury China.
Ya think they want the days of good ‘ol’ Hunter back who caves in for 2 ho’s and 5 lines?
No wonder they like Democrats!
This wouldn’t be pay back for Covid, would it?
It’s certainly reciprocity.
Uhhmm, heck yeah!
The CCP and gang are nothing but two-faced, conniving serpents, far as I’m concerned.
Also, pretty porcelain vessels are nice enough alright, but at the end of the day, they’re still empty.
The CCP’s a porcelain vessel alright… – The type you find in a bathroom.
COVID was an act of war carried out by our own corrupt and thoroughly evil DOD…..China was just their helper
I agree.
You come at the King, you best not miss.
Escalating was a very stupid decision on their part. They can probably get some of the PR people from the old Democrat regime to put some spin on it so it looks like they won! lol.
I believe that the President knows that, and will find a way for them to acquiesce with dignity. This truly is about fairness.
They already have lost face, and now their pouty little tantrum face is being slapped by President Trump 😉
“The concept of “face” is very strong in China.”
So’s the concept of ‘kow-towing’… – Pooh bear oughta read the room…
“Face” is a perception in the eyes of his fellow Chinese. It’s internal to China not external. The opinions of “uncivilized foreign barbarians” (non Han Chinese) don’t matter.
If he has to, Xi will inflict enough pain on his country to make them forget all about face. Xi will just blame it all on those dastardly Americans and use enough propaganda and collective punishment to make it stick.
It did indeed GB.
They are so used to the traitors who used to run America giving them everything they demand and more. This is a tough pill to swallow. President Trump may be the end of Xi when all is said and done.
👍 👍
Just like our Fake News. They will defend China till the end. China won’t be able to hold out for another month or two before they crawl back to PDJT. They are afraid the people will overthrow their Gov. if a lot of Chinese people are unemployed.
The Fake News is owned by Chyna.
…and Rupert Murdoch and family. Many pages of media owned…
It’s not mass unemployment Xi is worried about. The commoner masses are unarmed and under constant surveillance and propaganda indoctrination. They can’t do much on their own.
But when the wealthy oligarchs, the party’s Princelings, the corrupt CCP officials, connected PLA military brass and other elites all see their stolen fortunes evaporate, see all their perks and luxuries dry up – then that is trouble for Xi. Xi needs that layer of mid-level and top-level apparatchiks to run day to day business in China and to keep the commoner masses in line. If Xi loses his control over the mid/top level Mandarin class he is done. THAT could lose him the Mandate of Heaven. That is who could rise up against Xi.
Expect more purges, sudden retirements and politburo shuffling.
““China vows to fight to the end” in economic war with America.”
Which would only work if they WEREN’T DEPENDANT on America.
To put this in more succient terms, China needs the USA more that Europe needs the USA, and both Europe and China Economically couldn’t find their Butts Holes even with mutiple Harvard trained Proctologists helping them with Videos and Diagrams.
I was going to say “Harvard-trained proctologists aren’t much help in _any_ case,” but I decided not to…
Cue up The Doors. “The End”
When a rat is cornered, they can get vicious!
They can, but this rat’s not yet cornered…it has several ways to escape…primarily by negotiating in good faith with PDJT.
Part of the problem is they always negotiate in “good faith” & then continue to do what they’re doing. Fentanyl is a good example of their good faith negotiation/bad faith execution.
Yep. The two-faced deception won’t work for them this time.
Are we sure that is an option?
EU caves to pressure from Trump and won’t put tariffs on Jack Daniels, Makers Mark trib.al/WMKlbnV
I’m not a fan of Big Booze (Diageo, faugh).
However I am a fan of PDJT putting the EU in its place. So tired of Americans being bled out for the dissipated jerks from whom my ancestors fought to free their descendents.
Ok. The term big booze made me laugh.
“EU caves to pressure from Trump and won’t put tariffs on Jack Daniels, Makers Mark”
Bummer. Was looking forward to the price drop.
Rand Paul outed himself as a rat due to not being patient. He needs to be humiliated.
Then there are also Grassley and others so anxious to intrude on PDJT’s Article II duties and responsibilities.
I honestly thought Grassley was wiser than this.
Its not a matter of I.Q., or wisdom.
Despite the act, Grassley is highly intelligent,..but he is corrupt; he is OWNED, and when his owners tell him to oppose President Trump, he does.
The same can be said for a significant majority of the Republican party. Dutchman.
They are bought and owned, and will act according to their puppet masters’ wishes.
That’s why we call it a Uniparty.
Two Wings, One Vulture; Mucha Mierda.
Suck it, China. You got owned!
Oh My Goodness.
Our President is tough as nails.
125% Tariffs????
On our ‘best buds’ – Chyna??? (Sarc)
Let’s see who gnashes their teeth 🦷 on This action.
Then you’ll know exactly who is in the Panda’s Pocket 🐼
DJT means Business – bigly!!!!!
Should be 200%, next counter going up is 400%.
Bush, Clinton, Bush, O, Obiden. Sold this country like selling a stolen car for the parts.
What is Really Telling , Viceroygrey , is I haven’t heard One Peep out of *Bush , Clinton , Bush , O , Obiden*
Funny that .
Yeah!
Where are all the
‘Voices of Reason’ tge msm trots out anytime they bash the President?
Hmmmmm 🤔
They sent out the JV Team: Mike “30 pieces of silver” Pence and Rand “I can’t read the tea leaves” Paul to carry the message to the people who are getting what they voted for, MAGA.
There is nothing good or Godly about Pence… he is Judas.
Unless of course, he has repented. But, if so, he has not made that public.
Also, there would be spiritual fruit showing, I believe.
Judas at least felt guilt for his betrayal. Pence is just an unremorseful scumbag.
I have NO good expectations of Pence. He is a filthy, smarmy traitor to this country!
BUT, until now, I HAD a LITTLE bit of respect for Rand Paul, but NOT ANYMORE!
It’s almost as though the tractor beam of Mitch McConnell’s “crown” is pulling him in!
*Voices of Treason*
makes more sense to me , Border Bob 😜
Ryder is right!! 👍
Very good description!
If I didn’t know better, I would say this looks like a major component of a well thought out and multi-faceted plan. Naw, Trump is probably just winging it and shooting from the hip.
Either way, Trump’s good at it. LOL.
Couldn’t agree more. President Trump is a meticulous planner and a fierce warrior when he carries out his plans. In all ways (well maybe his younger years included some good times… ) President Trump is a disciplined man.
People who think he shoots from the hip or watches which way the wind blows don’t get him at all.
I agree.
When I heard that news about the pause and reduction to 10%, I thought that maybe all the nations Trump wants to do business with – has stuff we need- have come to the table and there is no need to contiue waiting.
Negotiations begin right away……leaving Zelensky, Europe and China as no longer necessary for America’s vision.
Thus, new leverage with these entities.
We’ll see how this plays out.
I laughed when one of the team said that President Trump wanted to be involved in all negotiations over these next 90 days (maybe it was Sec. Bessent when he explained things yesterday). That sounded so much like the President Trump we know and love. He jumps in with both hands and the bigger the problem the faster he jumps. lol
😜 🙃 😝
Have
Mitch the Turtle
Lyin Biden & his son
Swallowell
and
whoever inherited Diane Feinstein’s grift
been available for comment yet?
(I know there are plenty more, these are just off the top of my head.)
That would be about 2/3 of our Congress!
Panda has big pockets!
Now the entire world will have a choice between access to the American market and shutting off Chyna or getting access to Chinese cheap crap and losing the US market. This should be fun to watch.
Trump is smarter than all these goons.
I think everyone already decided and so far the EU is the one to go the China route. That’s not surprising when you look at their decisions over time. Basically, they are idiots. Smug idiots, but idiots just the same.
The anger at Trump’s disrupting moves against Their Order is telling.
China is a big part of Their New World Order.
It makes sense to me for Europe to make moves to “support Their Order” on the belief that Trump’s disruptions will fail and America will come crawling back to Her Betters.
Panda needs a dunce cap while he sits in corner…
As I read it, only the 75 nations who contacted the Trump admin to negotiate were given the 90 day tariffs “pause” and set at 10% for now.
First in line, does just fine.
Those who wait, may be too late.
One of the Trump sons recently said basically, that that is how his dad makes deals. First to the table gets the best deal.
Nice!
To think I learned this back in the seventies waiting overnight in the cold for concert tickets… Got 6th row center.
90 day tariff pause
The clock is now ticking on trade negotiations with those 75 nations.
It’s what I’ve been telling people in my circles…the “50% rate tariffs” are the bargaining chip to get the developed world (who have the highest tariffs with us) to the negotiating table.
Trump will negotiate a final bilateral tariff with each country that will be beneficial to keeping BOTH countries able to support institutions and infrastructure. Each side will get to say they won.
Each side will feel their National Sovereignty again…..which could interfere with WEF’s Global Order.
Ending that, at the source, must be the goal of any people that wist not be slaves.
Just curious. What percentage of all of our trade deficits is with China? Are we talking 30% or 75-80%? In other words, fix the China one and things are moving at least in right direction. Maybe some of the gamesmanship of this was all the world be against China. Would not do if we just did to China. But do everyone, so China isn’t looked to be singled out, then back off others if they want to negotiate. Then China backed into a corner. What country then will take China’s side if they are getting a good deal? Suddenly, there is nationalizm everywhere.
Hope this ramble is in words what I’m thinking.
Our yearly trade deficit: $920 Billion
Trade deficit w China: $295 Billion – 32%
Trade deficit w Europe: $235 Billion – 25%
Trade deficit w Vietnam: $123 Billion – 14%
Trade deficit w Canada: $63 Billion – 7%*
South Korea: $35 Billion – 4%
* we refine a lot of their oil, so not sure how that effects the analysis.
Hence a good reason to lock in a good deal w Vietnam and others.
Vietnam is used by Chyna as a push through to the US. Just like Mexico was going to be used for cars into the US until Trump was elected by We the People.
Wait a bit. Vietnam and SK are both next in the grand negotiation line.
Vietnam’s tariff rate was extraordinarily high. President Trump, by slapping a rate on Vietnam of only half what they charge us, very quickly said they’d drop ALL tariffs against the US – but Trump doesn’t want ALL tariffs dropped.
So, yes, Vietnam and South Korea were absolutely among the very first in line to negotiate a fair deal that will benefit both them and us.
And that doesn’t even tally the downstream effects of the deficits–the job losses, the losses of opportunities to start/grow businesses, the communities that don’t happen because this economic activity and social possibility is sucked dry by the vampires hiding inside the dragon costume, the costs of despair and frustration and struggle.
Yes!! Thank you for pointing that out. These deficit numbers do not include the downstream economic ruin that occur all across America.
“According to the data of the BEA, USDOC, China’s share of the total US deficit of trade in goods has fallen in each of the past six years, from 47.5 percent in 2018 to 24.6 percent in 2024, while the US trade deficit with other countries and regions has increased substantially in the same period.” However I do not think this Google Search result captured all the Chinese transhipments . No doubt the Chinese portion is still near 47%.
I’m not entirely following what you’re saying, but I don’t give a damn if China is singled out. Let them rot alone in the corner. We should put the screws to them like they’ve never seen. I’m tired of all our past administrations playing nice. I don’t even want to do a trade deal with them. Slap on a 400% tariff and call it a day. Let companies leave and shift production elsewhere. What good is a deal with them when they do nothing but lie, cheat, and steal. They tell you what you want to hear and then renege on everything. No thanks! The faster we decouple from that criminal enterprise, the better.
A very good description, I would say!
Take away most favored nation status
^ This
And transfer it to Japan?
Or maybe Argentina.
Russia
Lots of Congressional splodey heads if that were to happen. Quite entertaining.
Excellent for We the People.
How about eliminating “Most Favored Nation ” status!!
Only if we extend it to Russia.
🔥 WH PRESS SEC: “Many of you in the media clearly missed The Art of the Deal”
They should hand out copies.
Autographed copies!! Ha ha ha.
This was brilliantly executed by @realDonaldTrump. Textbook, Art of the Deal.
This from the guy who has been whining for the past week about tariffs??
He’s probably already deleted all of his tweets from the last week.
Ackman got updated instructions from Netanyahu.
I am laughing so hard that the only cure will be More Cowbell!
The MSM is too busy hating Trump to educate themselves on who he is and how he operates.
If they did, they could ask intelligent and informed questions at the pressers.
Instead, Trump and Karoline make examples of them to the world and show how out of touch they are with what is going on.
Perhaps they are the reason boxes of toothpicks have instructions for use on them?
This move is 4-D chess.
🎯
Now wondering where all the Eeyores who routinely claim it’s only checkers are hiding right now. 😉
So our VSGPDJT just installed a worldwide tariff of 10% across the board and everyone is thanking him. Wow. Just Wow.
Everyone’s heads are still spinning too fast to keep up!
Edit: And that’s just the _reciprocal_ tariff’s!
Chicken
… – Crispy Cantonese style…
This is such a cheer or cry situation. This isn’t high intellectual negotiation or some great economic theories at work that only PhD’s understand. This is just common sense and just how simple this is. The US was simply being ripped off by the rest of the world and our elected officials were clear participants. Good news our next generation may have a golden opportunity at the American dream.
Those with economic PhDs have no clue what’s happening.
I think they’re actually just pissed off they weren’t consulted. I saw TDS-infected talking heads on CNBC saying Wall Street was pissed they didn’t know the tariff plan in advance and hadn’t been consulted ahead of time. (And therefore they couldn’t front run it.)
they actually made fun of him pointing out that 10% is the floor rate (visual chart)
Bessent explained it today. the media made fun of themselves trying to joke
Wall Street has become another propagandist arm of the Democrat Communists with severe TDS, IMHAO. My husband keeps saying “Wall Street doesn’t like uncertainty.” IMHAO, WS creates all of its uncertainty by betting AGAINST Trump.
The economic PhDs need someone to take the simple concepts and explain it to them in a complex way, so they understand. /s
Although, I suppose…
“A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still.”
Winnie Xi Pooh must be big mad.
Why? To calm the stock market?
That is how they will spin it on X that he caved after tanking the stock Market
Retarded libs refuse to acknowledge that Trump indeed knows what he’s doing and it’s part of a calculated plan.
Part of their pretending not to know things. They (particularly university faculty) can’t admit that President Trump has a plan and knows how to execute it. If they did, their house of cards starts to collapse.
funny just read that the dow surged 2300 points today in its biggest one day gain in 5 yrs.s&p and nasdaq also up almost 10%.
“But, my 401k, whatever shall I DO?!!”
LOL, Give thanks to President Trump for securing your retirement, and that of your grandchildren.
Now, can we also get a fast tracked law that forbids Chinese nationals from owning US property and real estate? Force them to divest from their current holdings asap.
And get them out of our schools. Giving STEM educations to our worst enemies is ludicrous.
I had several of them as MS students and they were the worst cheaters I’ve ever seen. Had to make up five exams with differences in them so they looked close but the final answer was different. It was fun watching them look at someone’s paper, copy that answer, then be so wrong…. another thing one admitted to me, the Chinese do not have the capacity for ‘original thought’. Show them a concept and they grab on and run but can’t do the ‘concept’ part on their own.
This is the end product of Authoritarianism. It is the death knell of the nation.
We see it happening in our own country but we are labeling it: lack of creativity/ innovation.
Yes, please & thank you!
The penguins are safe for now.
Speaking of Penguin Island…. I hope we’re keeping an eye on the sneaky maneuvers China will no doubt undertake to circumvent the tariffs. Wilbur Ross is concerned China will funnel their goods through other countries to avoid the tariffs. This loophole needs to be choked off. What’s the plan there?
Most likely end that loophole the way Team Trump tried to end NAFTA loopholes with the USMCA. It will all be baked into the new trade agreements.
Exactly, hence the “bespoke” trade agreements made with each country seperately, no “cookie cutter” and PDJT will personally sign off on each deal.
thats how Bessent reported they knew chinas move ( before they openly spome)…
they saw them diverting from us and shipping to the EU
FAFO
Bessent covered this recently when asked why put tariffs on this relatively unknown island… He said the tariffs are done ALL IN, globally, because otherwise China will just find a country not on the tariff list and ship there to ship to the US to avoid the tariffs. The purpose of doing all 180 countries at once was to close the loopholes!
Trump’s the environmental president. No more Harbor Freight crap in our landfills.
Neat!!
This makes me think of the story Don Jr told about the time he tried to bow up to his father, and POTUS jumped up like lightening and ‘wore him out’. I think CCP is getting ‘fed up Daddy Trump’.
Time to stop pretending
https://nypost.com/2025/04/08/us-news/elon-musk-rips-moron-trump-trade-adviser-peter-navarro/
If Peter is in agreement with President Trump and Elon thinks Peter is a moron, then is Elon sending a side swipe at President Trump?
they got the media to glorify elon again and say sweet things.
hilarious
Navarro is a loyal MAGA Senior Counselor to the President for Trade and Manufacturing. He went to prison for defending his President and country. Musk is what exactly? A former Biden and DeSantis supporter?
You believe the corporate media?
I believe Musk meant what he said regardless of what the media says.
Elon has a different view of international trade just like his view of H1B issues differ from MAGA. People can have different opinions. He could just say he hires lots of H1Bs and builds cars in China. His position makes sense for him. Name calling like moron is grade school.
So you agree he meant what he said? good
I agree, he absolutely meant to say it. Does he actually believe Navarro is a moron. I don’t believe so. It was a schoolyard taunt.
The pink hats will be buying Tesla’s again!
No. Corporate Media is owned by Soros and Associates a 501 c3 tax exempt entity.
Old news. I think they’ve kissed and made up. Everyone knows you don’t have to like the people you work with to get the job done. HR 101.
I believe him…regardless of what the media says. But I can also choose to pretend not to.
They were able to make things cheaper because of H1B. How did those H1B boys do on the software for the 737 Max?
That’s Elon’s rant against the revocation of H1B visas, NOT tariffs. Different topic.
I believe he meant what he said then and I believe he meant what he said now.
The flak only gets heavy when you’re over the target… Must be Over the Target
Oh I see, he didnt mean what he said. Hes a good boy.
Kayfabe.
Yeah, Elon’s little rant aged like milk in the Arizona sun.
China humiliated, massive stock market rally (probably end above where it was before the “crash”, every other country saying “thank you” for the temporary tariff rate of only 10% as they line up trade meetings that will in the news for likely the next three months (hence the 90 day pause).
This also means China logically has to sit in its mess of now 125% tariffs for the next three months as well before they can even get a meeting about changing course.
At Trumpian speed, 90 days may as well be 9 years in terms of what could be the political landscape by then. A deal with Russia and a few others to smash the Belt and Road and the whole China/Globalist house of cards could be in irreversible collapse 90 days from now.
And remember, Russia is totally out of this, because technically the Sanctions are still un place, so no trade is going on with Russia.
And yet, …negotiations are ongoing with Russia, despite Zmans theatrics, despite EU posturing, the negitiations between the U.S. and Russia continue, and involve undoing those sanctions and establishing “normal diplomatic relations”.
What have I been sayin?
SEE THE WHOLE BOARD.
Musk is trying to salvage his Tesla investment.
Mush is also heavily invested, time, $, effort in supporting the European Nationalist parties, from Reform in GB, to AFD in Germany, Le Pen in France, Meloni in Italy, etc.
Across Europe, the MEGA Coalition are poised to topple the elites, and Musk is helping where he can.
I wish YOU would stop.
stop quoting Musk?
This is high school mean girl drama. I don’t care. In the end, they will make nice behind the scenes and in public behave themselves.
This is much ado about nothing.
ahhh, how sweeet
Sen Cruz just this moment said on Fox News that President Trump spent an hour on the phone with him last evening discussing Cruz’s concerns.
I don’t know which pisses me off more. That Fox gives this grifter so much face time, or that our President wasted an hour of his precious time on the phone with this chameleon.
One thing President Trump doesn’t do is waste his time. He has Cruz’s measure.
Leafs gonna leaf.
If PDJT spent an hour on the phone allegedly talking Cruz down from the cliff then PDJT must have a reason to do so.
My guess? It was a group phone call and Cruz did not get one-on-one time with PDJT. But the call lasted one hour. It was probably to get the senators to start doing their jobs for Americans.
Cruz is definetely a legend ib his own mind, and the least liked in a caucus of unlikeable *ssholes.
Politicians lie. One hour? Lol
Rep Greg Murphy on CNN saying the reporter is being dramatic and explajned how America has been building other countries up since world war II at the expense of the Americans. we have become a service and government country
The 90 day pause for all nations that haven’t retaliated against Trump’s tariffs, made concurrently with raising tariffs on China to 125% is a brilliant use of the stick for the Dragon and the carrot for everyone else, because it makes a pariah of Beijing and nips in the bud any movement among other U.S. trading partners to align with them, at the same time calming the stock market which soared by over 6% upon hearing of the pause.
Just as importantly, a government auction of 39 billion in U.S. Treasury Notes just sold out completely…which means the world has great confidence in the U.S. making good on its financial obligations and THAT reduces our dependence on China to finance our debt!
Trump is playing this so well I can hardly tell you!
DJT is just amazing
He surely is!
Carnage on Wall Street. Traders tripping all over each other rushing with buy orders.
Trading Places – OJ futures.
PDJT framed China as a bad actor publically
( just dont retaliate and you will be fine)
Bessent said the rates you had were the ceiling and we now have them at the floor ( it can be anywhere in there depending on the negotiation)
Winning 🇺🇸
I am going to ask the question again, to make it clear…that is to say, to make sure I UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS REALLY MEANS..(I do not pretend to know what this means…so help me out understanding).
these tariffs, do they apply to amazon, Walmart, target and every other US BASED retailer that buys from china and then rebrands or repackages *usually in China, but also sometimes here in the US domestic) and then resells these Chinese items to US customers, in store and online?
we can’t really be serious about closing a trade imbalance if we are pretending that Amazon buying billions of cheap items from china direct, then “warehousing” them INCONUS to be sold to the US customer isn’t on the table?
I made this first question wrt to de minimus tax…but that is largely accorded certain low cost trade costs when under a value of something like 700-800 bucks…perhaps I have gotten these two issues incorrect. How does that impact Amazon…or are we just going to look the other way because you know amazon is a “US company”..see the problem?
lets look at it another way. right now, almost all apple phones with few exceptions are completely manufactured in china. Does apple, a US based company get a free pass from these tariffs? and if so, what will the natural outcome become? iphones that get sold for 5thousand bucks a pop?
Help me understand. I am not against these tarrifs, I think they are a good way to lever negotiated trade terms. and to rebalance trade inequities. But what are going to be the effects? and who gets a free pass? lets have that conversation.
God Bless America
The tariffs are based on the point of manufacture, not the country of incorporation of the manufacturer. The President has made it clear that companies based all over the world can avoid the tariffs by simply manufacturing their products here in the U.S. The goal is the creation of jobs for Americans. So no, Apple does not get a pass for its phones manufactured in China.
The President’s ultimate goal is to diminish the economic power of China, and build up that of the U.S., by giving strong incentive for companies to rebuild the manufacturing base of the U.S. and make their products here.
J
Correct.
They have to manufacture in the USA, use parts that are manufactured in the USA (also must use materials created/mined/excavated in the USA and hire Americans to do the work), and hire Americans to do the work in the USA. Then they avoid tariffs and get to enjoy the 15% corporate tax rate.
I don’t know that hiring Americans is part of the formula even though benefits to American workers are the marketing focus. I fully expect the visa worker programs to expand as new production moves here. I think PDJT is fine with more visa workers because he has repeatedly praised it and, during the recent scrap involving Elon and Vivek with regard to more visa workers, PDJT did not commit to not using or expanding the visa programs.
Personally I am not thrilled with how many businesses in my area are now run by Indians.
Well, we do have to get Americans back working & that’s going to require making those on welfare also have work requirements. And work shouldn’t = this paid activism crap!! And yes, Ms. Crockett, we Americans may have to pick our own damn cotton again. And stop sending our kids to these woke universities because they’re not learning job skills.
WTH are you talking about? I am worried about a lot of jobs going to visa holders and you post nonsense. Look up the statistics.
You want Indians…….check out Intel. It is a very white hostile work environment.
There have been some honest discussions about the visa programs replacing Americans right here at CTH.
Surprised you used a leftist tactic to reply to me. Leftists automatically make everything about race. As for me, I am concerned for Americans. PS There are lots of races included in the word “Americans.”
l’m going to assume apple imports from china so its getting hit withthw 125%
and US based companies getting a sweet deal is a possibility also ( the example of apple would be good one to know)
Yes. But they just shipped several plane loads of product into the US to get it under the wire now they need to figure out how to move forward.
Musk will be building an X-Phone in a hurry. Perfect opportunity to capitalize on the vacuum.
I sure hope so.
Only having a choice between Apple and Google (Android) is like a choice between warm $hit and cold $hit.
*Apologies to Bukowsky.
There is no free pass.
Ex: https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2025/04/report-tech-giant-apple-flies-five-planeloads-iphones/
Read this yesterday Reg, manufactured in China and India. Flew in the iPhones just before tariff start. .
The iPhone is a good example of how hard this is to figure out.
The iPhone uses components and software from around the world. Its final assembly point is in China, but that is less than 10% of the cost of production. You can count on China using its rare earth monopoly to force this as well.
But when it comes to the import vs export data, this is still counted as 100% exported value from China even though 90% of the value was ‘imported’ into China for finally assembly.
The other difficulty is all the pass through production cheating from China to other nations to obscure its origin.
For example, if Elon truly believed that his cars are the most North American-built cars in the US market, tariffs on China would be a significant benefit to Tesla and give his company a strong competitive advantage.
China does not have a rare earth monopoly. That has been grossly exaggerated. It’s merely the cheapest source because of using slave labor to mine and refine it.
Rare Earth elements are widely spread around the world, but the production is very dirty.
While the CCP does have a lot of mining of Rare Earth, it has a near monopoly of producing the end-use components.
None of the above ‘has’ to occur in China, but they have used this strategic monopoly to extract IP from technology companies that can’t produce their products without them. This is an absolute fact.
China is pillaging Africa for all it’s natural resources.
my understanding is that Tesla cars built in China are sold in China only or in ASEAN markets…are not allowed to be sold into us. The tesla factory in the US sells tesla to us. effectively, there is no downside to the telsa the company.
to emphasize this point, there are about 6 different EV cars manufacturers in China. none of them are allowed to be sold into us markets. I am fairly confident this trade arrangement was set up by the big two auto manufacturers and not musk. it would turn out this has benefited his company that arrangement.
at current the risk tesla faces is the radicals who are hate selling his stock and ragers who are convinced that selling their teslas at a loss and new buyers refusing Tesla cars demonstrates their dedication to the anti-nazi propaganda they have been trained like monkeys to swing from.
we do live in a very weird timeline…Fortunately, the weirdness will not have power any time soon..not at the global level. And for that I am thankful for President Trump and everyone who stood up straight, did not back down and voted to put him back in the power chair.
God Bless America
This is what I thought as well but Elon’s ‘reaction’ doesn’t make sense if his statement that the Tesla’s sold in the US is the most US-produced vehicle.
He did say ‘North’ America, which we know can include CCP parts being passed through Mexico and Canada. Then his reaction makes sense.
Good questions. I would also like to know how this works, because we all know that Amazon and Walmart, among others, sell loads of Chinese crap.
Anything Walmart, Amazon, or Apple buys from China will be hit. It is why Apple flew several plane loads of phones into the country this week to beat the tariff.
Amazon pays the tariff to the U.S. federal government to import an item made in China.
———-
Let’s say China is selling a pencil for resale. The price is $1.00.
Let’s say the tariff is 100% of the price.
Then Amazon pays the U.S. federal government (External Revenue Service) $1.00 and pays the Chinese company $1.00 to import that pencil for resale.
So, yes, the American retail businesses based in the United States (for example Walmart) are paying the tariffs, if they want to import from China.
So . . . if China wants to continue selling into the U.S. market, China will lower its prices or devalue its currency . . . so the price to Amazon stays about the same.
With a 100% tariff, only luxury goods that the rich want regardless of price will flow from China.
Does China make luxury goods?
A ten percent universal tariff is more reasonable. Goods still flow, but the country reduces its price to counteract the fee that the retail store in the U.S. must pay the federal government to import the good for resale.
When a country reduces the price or devalues its currency, the country is in essence paying the tariff instead of Walmart.
Assuming the tariffs impact all classes of consumer crap sold on Amazon etc., I expect those online sellers to sell existing inventory until you start seeing Out Of Stock on the item pages. We should also expect China to eat as much of the tariff as possible on a temporary basis (as they did in Trump’s first term when he raised tariff costs on them), until that becomes unaffordable to them.
We might see the online sellers raise prices by 100% on products where there’s no competition but that’s just a wild guess on my part.
Bottom line – I don’t think this situation will last very long….weeks at most
Long enough to get rid of Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Walmart etc I hope!
THIS situation, yes,..but there are going to be some longer term ripples, over time.
Hence President Trump having a deal with Russia, where American Companies extract and refine rare earths, for example…whether from What used to be Ukraine, or from Russias heartland.
Dutch I read not too long ago that the US has a bounty of rare earth minerals right here in the states.
In 2020, Natl Review published this article, the gist of which is- yes, we have beaucoup R.E. minerals but we need a way to extract them that doesn’t upset the environmentalists.
https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/u-s-deposits-of-rare-earth-elements-are-not-so-rare-after-all/
I say – To H377 with the commie Enviro Wackos! They’re the ones who’ve practically destroyed US manufacturing and incentivized mfrs. to move overseas where those prohibitions don’t exist. Stop kissing their commie rear ends.
Dig out the R.E. minerals using whatever best practices already exist.
Came in from landwork, sat down with my coffee, opened TCT, read those first two sentences…and let out a howl of laughter that scared the Forest birds. Sorry lil frens. (They’ll be back. I put out Elevenses for them.)
Yes, purplehairs and screechblorts and GOPe troughsnouts, this is indeed what I voted for.
Also want to say that I got around last night to watching his hosting at the WH of the LA Dodgers the other day.
It was just so good to see him smiling and happy and snug in the Church of Baseball, that I watched it twice (while weaving). I’ve said for five years now, I just want to see him SMILE again, like he did the day he played catch with the Little League Champions on the WH lawn, in ’17 or ’18. The man is carrying so much, and he knows and sees things we can’t, and we’d probably melt like Jell-o on a 110 degree day if we did.

Thank you – my link didn’t work!
Opinion wise its because they have swamped him with wanting to speak with him that he lowered the tariffs until he can speak and evaluate the options and what they say.
# I ❤️ tariffs
😀
Slap heavy service tariffs on India next. Now. Yesterday.
A sigh of relief here. I like this thinking.
Tariffs On. Tariffs Off.
Wax On. Wax Off.
Looks like the rest of the world gets to deal with China’s trade dumping on steroids.
Regardless, we need to eliminate trade with china totally.
Ross Perot Nailed It On Trade In 1992 (2:35)
Dec 6, 2009
From Vanity Fair no less:
WHAT ROSS PEROT GOT RIGHT ABOUT AMERICA
Perot, who ran the most successful third-party presidential campaign in 80 years, stayed independent-minded until the end. To flout prevailing opinion carries a high price, and he endured a lot of abuse for standing alone. But Perot looks a good deal better in hindsight than many of his critics.
JULY 9, 2019
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/07/what-ross-perot-got-right-about-america
To read some of the coverage of Perot from that year is to be reminded of how much the U.S. press detests populism in any form, no matter who’s peddling it. The New Yorker and the New York Times and numerous other publications signaled their distaste and alarm, and one could read comparisons between Perot and figures like Péron and Mussolini. “Perot is the closest American approximation of fascism ever to have a real shot at the Oval Office,” warned the New Republic. It’s no wonder that Perot, whatever dictatorial streaks he might have had, was taken aback by the vehemence of opposition he triggered.
The heart of the Perot message concerned deficits, a central focus of the 1990s. Whether we were deluded back then, when it was fashionable to care about balanced budgets, or are deluded now, when it’s fashionable to be unconcerned about them, deficits no longer take center stage when it comes to people’s concerns. But Perot’s message about the middle class getting squeezed and ignored resonated as much then as it did 24 years later, and his stances on trade and war were, in the eyes of many, vindicated to a large degree in the decades that followed. Perot opposed the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, warning of a loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs to outsourcing. He also disagreed with the decision to go to war with Iraq under George H.W. Bush, even though it had proved to be a popular course of action. Trade and war were two of Trump’s major heresies when he took on the establishment of Republicans and Democrats.
To flout prevailing opinion carries a high price, and Perot endured a lot of abuse for standing alone. When Perot went toe-to-toe with Al Gore in a debate over NAFTA, in 1993, he argued that it would cause a lot of U.S. jobs to be sent to Mexico, with large trade deficits to boot, and would hurt both sides. Gore fired back with arguments that have been used many times since against the outlier: that the experts know better and that dissenters are fools or demagogues. Perot was defying “every living Nobel Prize winner in economics, conservatives, liberals, everyone in between,” Gore said. He was “attempting to bring out the politics of fear.” And, what’s more, the United States was finally running a trade surplus with Mexico, and NAFTA would “by removing those barriers, greatly accelerate” that trend. The next day, almost every media outlet declared Gore the runaway victor and Perot the big loser.
But Perot looks a good deal better today than many of his critics and opponents.
Is algore dead yet?
PDJT has repeatedly said that during the Covid drama that the CCP cost the USA a trillion dollars. Then their installation cost the USA another couple of trillion dollars.
I don’t think that he has forgotten this fact. Kill the Dragon and save the world.
The Reckoning is coming for Chyna.
For clarity, I meant to say, “Then their installation of Joe Biden…”
Kick the Dragon over the edge of their economic cliff.
“Kyle Bass recommended Scott Bessent as the top choice for U.S. Treasury Secretary, highlighting Bessent’s understanding of markets, economics, and geopolitics. Bass believes that Bessent is highly qualified for the role and would be respected by global central bankers.”
Kyle Bass: Why the Chinese Economy is Going to Collapse (24:53)
American Thought Leaders – The Epoch Times
8 Jan 2025
BTW, if they experience an economic crash, Bass predicts an attack on Taiwan.
They’re PRIMARILY after the tech there they have been EFFECTIVELY blocked from having – the tech that allows Taiwan to use sole-source Dutch hardware to produce 90% of the worlds most advanced integrated circuit “chips.”
A dirt simple way to prevent them from invading – do what was recently suggested in a US Army War College paper and promise to destroy the chip plants if they invade. I’ve already seen that publicly stated by a congressman on Fox.
Since those plants need to be 1000 times cleaner than an operating room to function, that is trivially easy. A barrage of submarine launched cruise missiles from subs submerged FAR from Taiwan would do the job easily, putting them out of work PERMANENTLY. That would have negative economic effects worldwide, but it would totally OBLITERATE the Chinese economy.
Winston – Great interview, thanks for sharing.
With this chess move by our leader President Trump be the shove reluctant Republicans needed to Vote his tax cut? Now what can they whine about?
They’ll find something.
Two vehicles on a one-lane street on a head-on track. Mr. Xi driving a Hyundai (had to borrow one from Seoul); PDJT in my Dodge Ram 2500 (she’s a 2004 model but still sassy).
Who blinks first?
It occurs to me that Xi wants to decouple China from the USA as much as we want to decouple. Slow pain for China without a clear boogeyman could be politically worse for Xi than abrupt pain that can be blamed on US aggression. There’s plenty of systemic issues in China that need to be addressed. Xi can aggressively attack them all and blame everything on the USA. Once free of dependence on US markets Xi is free to attack Taiwan and has cleaned up internal problems. I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t a false flag military confrontation with the USA to bolster Chinese patriotism in the short term.
I disagree about Xi wanting to decouple from the US. Why would they? They’re ripping us off, stealing our intellectual property, and lying to our faces. Until Trump, they’ve operated with impunity. We do need to decouple from them. They will never change.
💯agreed❗

This makes perfect sense to me.
It’s not about punishing, it’s about making friends. China has made it clear they don’t want to be in the friend group. They are more ungrateful than the French. WWII wasn’t that long ago.
Reflecting on this, four things come to mind.
The first is that every nation should be afforded some level of domestic production for national security and/or to prevent over-dependency before being considered a nation not committed to free and fair trade. Let’s say, for the sake of argument, a nation can protect up to half of any product/service it labels as such. For example, the US could limit the importation of steel to no more than 50% of domestic consumption.
The second is that the overall ‘international’ goal is for all nations to have a balance of trade. This doesn’t mean that nation-on-nation trade will be balanced, but that after the dust settles, no nation is a significant and perpetual net importer or exporter.
The third is that every nation benefits when we can utilize ‘true’ comparative advantages that other nations will naturally have in various goods and services. For example, importing tropical fruit to climates that can’t produce them except in greenhouses. Or let’s say the production of Christmas decorations is not considered a national security issue and the importation is unrestricted.
The fourth is that all the above should be the domain of Representative Governments that are responsive to their citizens. Comparative advantage should not be the result of exploiting slave labor.
Big Panda Sads
Hmm,…Bessett said “Everythings on the table”.
With Iran, President Trump said “any country that buys Iranian oil, we won’t do business with.”
Do you suppose the “bespoke” 1 on 1 trade deals he will be making with “over 75 ciuntries” will include a clause or two, regarding China?
Certainly no allowing China to trans-ship thru their country to avoid tariffs, but an outright prohibition on the country buying from China, at all?
So that’s where the popcorn went!
Dude!!!! That is NOT enough popcorn!!!!!
