Apparently, the U.S. government has been sending $6oo million/yr to universities in Australia to subsidize various college research programs. The Trump administration has told Australia the funding will likely end.
The Australian university system is in a state of panic, telling their government to declare a “state of emergency”.
One particular quote from within the Sky News article below seemingly encapsulates the mindset of the situation in the land down under:

I say this as someone with many, many years of experience in academia, from an academic family: burn it all down and start over from scratch. Externally imposed financial discipline is not going to change institutional culture, either in Australia or here or anywhere else. Staffing boards of regents with corrupt establishment Republican cuckfools (like so many red states do) simply ensures that the rot continues to fester. Establishment Republicans ARE leftists, by culture.
Have extended family in academia and I don’t want them to hurt. However the waste in education is observable to people who have been frugal by necessity.
When my grandmother attended college around 1910, she had to work between years to afford tuition, and classes were provided with as much frugality as possible. Students worked at the college farm and college industries, producing useful products from dairy to eggs to maids’ aprons. Textbooks were rented and reused, nothing like the $200 textbooks I was asked to purchase and which were “revised” every year.
Sexual mores were conservative and strictly enforced, no drunkenness or pregnancy/abortions. A whole different world. Imperfect, but not carelessly stupid
