The issue of Canada becoming the 51st state arose from a conversation in Mar-a-Lago between Prime Minister Trudeau and U.S President Donald Trump.
As Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlined, Trudeau said if President Trump was to make the Canadian government pay reciprocal tariffs, open the USMCA trade agreements to force reciprocity, and/or balance economic relations on non-tariff issues, then Canada would collapse and cease to exist.
In essence, Canada cannot survive as a free and independent north American nation, without receiving all the one-way benefits from the U.S. economy. To wit, President Trump then said, if Canada cannot survive in a balanced rules environment, including putting together their own military and defenses (which it cannot), then Canada should become the 51st U.S state.
This is the first point of contention for the gender-correct qualifications of Canadian Ambassador to the U.S, Kirsten Hillman. Ambassador Hillman appears on Fox News Sunday’ to comment on U.S.-Canada relations, trade negotiations and how a federal election could impact the relationship between the two nations.
Ms. Hillman says Canadians will never give up their sovereignty. Let me repeat the non-pretending reality. If Canada loses all of the one-way benefits it receives from its relationship with the United States, the Canadian system of government and economics collapses.
Closed and non-competitive banking and finance sectors; a small military budget that does not even reach NATO expectations; an assembly or ‘pass through’ economy that doesn’t have heavy industry but instead assembles goods from foreign nations for transport into the United States; one-way excessive tariffs on American products. If these are ended, the lifestyle of the Canadian people immediately changes. Hence Trudeau saying, Canada cannot exist.
At the current rate of economic conflict, the Canadian dollar will lose 50% of its value by mid-summer 2025. This is the unavoidable reality Ms Hillman and the Canadian left-wing government will not openly discuss.
The only way for Canada to be a sovereign nation unattached to the United States, is if they drop all of their climate-change initiatives, drop their liberal economic rules and regulations, begin a system of heavy industry production again and get back to using cheap energy production as the fuel to drive it.
Canada would then need to discontinue most social welfare programs and instead divert that money to their military budget.
The leftist economic policies are why the Canadian banking system has to be closed, and all competition removed from the internal banking and finance equation. If reciprocity is demanded and enforced, Canada collapses; it’s that simple.
I’ll say it again, do we really want all those leftist Canadians voting in our elections? Maybe as a commonwealth like Puerto Rico

Agreed that Canada being state 51 is not the actual goal. Focus on what PDJT is really after – jobs, opportunity for Americans, economic success. What does Canada have in excess? Natural resources – wood, oil & gas, ores and minerals, etc. What puts America in a position to be able to utilize those resources? Jobs in the USA. Fair access (see: balanced tariffs, common sense trade agreements) to resources. The ability to compete in the global marketplace to manufacture items in the USA, and not continue the economic policy of outsourcing jobs to China / Southeast Asia / our neighbors.
How does PDJT start the conversation with a country that has enjoyed exploiting the imbalance of trade for years, and put it right in the faces of the US population? He makes bold claims to draw attention to the issue, something catchy like Canada should be our 51st state. Once the attention is on the issue in a way that can’t be ignored by MSM (successfully accomplished at this point), people actually will start waking up to the imbalance one way or the other. Even if the liberal media uses negative coverage of this issue, they inadvertently point out that there’s an imbalance. The Canadian providence of Alberta has talked about leaving Canada and joining the US for years now. Alberta is a large oil producer and is hamstrung by the environmentalist in eastern Canada. There is a rivalry in the technical side oil industry between Houston and Calgary.

Saskatchewan is much like the Dakotas here in the states. Manitoba begins to look a little more like Minnesota. British Columbia is much like our West Coast – deeply Leftists major cities (Vancouver is just across the bay from Seattle), but much more conservative outside the big city.

Given the pre-existing tariffs Canada had on American goods, which nearly no one in America or Canada is made aware of, President Trumps should explain his rationale for talking about Canada being a “51st state”. Agree with others posting who rightly say Canadians have no desire to be Americans, and Americans have no desire to bring Canada into the U.S. I believe they’d demand to be separate states mirroring their provinces. What a disaster that would be.
Perhaps negotiations will ultimately bring a balanced and fair outcome.

That said…I’m not so sure the western provinces of Canada (specifically, Alberta and Saskatchewan) would agree to such a vote.

After WW II, Newfoundland and Labrador was still a British colony. It voted in a referendum to join Canada, although supposedly if the voters had been given the choice, it would have joined the US.
The 4 choices were join Canada, join US, stay a colony, or be independent. Join Canada and stay a colony survived to the runoff, and join Canada won because they wanted the federal government to fund the welfare.

Our biggest illegal immigrant population here in southern Arizona is Canadians who overstay their tourist visas and own homes down here. Nobody says anything about it because we have traditionally treated Canadians with an unwritten exemption. That is gone now. Since the ‘economic warfare’ BS we see every night on TV has arrived, the number of Canadians clogging the roadway with their under-the-speed-limit driving has dropped dramatically. We shall see how the future of this portends. I myself look forward to being able to get reservations in the restaurants in the winter months and the lessened traffic.
