A few points on this highly debated event:
1. Trump is right to treat Zelensky as a lowlife, because, in many ways, Zelensky is.
2. This was not an accident, and Zelensky is not crazy. My instincts tell me that this was a last-ditch attempt by Zelensky’s handlers within the intelligence community in D.C. to undermine Trump, create an impeachable offense, and at least slow him down.
3. Despite all the noise, it’s important to remember that the U.S. has been using Ukraine as a pawn since the early 2000s, a strategy that ultimately led to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and invasion. While Trump was right to try to end the conflict and recover American funds, it is ultimately our country that has created this entire disaster.
Conclusion: Zelensky’s defense should have been: “Mr. President, I understand you’re trying to end the war, but it was the United States that put a target on our backs, put us in this impossible position in the first place, and now we are being extorted by the United States as if we had any choice.” Unfortunately for Ukraine, he can’t play this card, which would have left Trump and Vance without a valid defense, because Zelensky was never truly on Ukraine’s side.

What just happened in the Oval Office cannot be overstated
What just happened is a watershed moment in the history of the nation. It marks the end of the process begun by Woodrow Wilson of integrating the United States into the European world order.
Wilson dreamed of having the world run from Brussels, all paid for and defended by the American economy and military muscle. What he began with his dragging us into WWI and the League of Nations, continued uninterrupted through FDR and the United Nations, Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Ford, Carter Reagan, Clinton, Bushes 1 and 2, and reached its zenith under Obama/Biden. None of our Republican presidents, not even Nixon or Reagan, seemed to understand the danger of their full aims. I’m not saying Z didn’t deserve it, but once that happened it was all downhill. What a train wreck. It was TMI, for my taste. Kind of like watching a couple start to fight with each other in front of everyone when you’ve invited them to a dinner party.
We didn’t see this spelled out in the room, but behind the scenes is Z trying to use the threat of escalating this conflict into WWIII as a bargaining chip to get what he wants? “I don’t want a ceasefire without security”, when he’s already been told members of Nato will be involved in that? Is this about him demanding to be included in NATO?
The state of affairs on how this was left is deeply disappointing. Get ready for the resurrection of the media attacks that Trump is aligned with Putin because this meeting was such a Sh%T Sh*W. They are not going to accept Trump’s neutrality in this.

Zelensky: said he did NOT want a ceasefire, and in later interviews and statements Zelensky made clear he wants to continue fighting until Russia is driven out of Ukraine.
Can’t sign an economic agreement when there is such a basic underlying disagreements about peace v war.
Zelensky indicated in the Fox interview his plan B was for Europe to pressure the U.S. to provide the necessary financial backing and weaponry. I wondered how that would work … then realized .. NATO.
Two scenarios could force us to back Ukraine via our contract to back any NATO member … 1) if Ukraine were brought into NATO or 2) if European troops (members of NATO) enter Ukraine and are fired on by Russia.
At this point my hope is we do not sign any economic agreement AND that we find a way to exit NATO which may be difficult if Congress needs to agree. President Trump has a mind that works in 10-level chess mode … so I have hope.

In the end, Zelenskyy signed his own death warrant.
He thought he was still dealing with a corrupt President and a corrupt administration, and could therefore just make another demand that would be catered to in order to keep up appearances and get things done, so to speak.
The whole world saw in real time, just how corrupt and entitled Zelenskyy is. Now he will head back to Ukraine thinking he has shown us Americans who’s in charge.
Anyone giving odds on how long he remains the dictator in chief in Ukraine?
No odds. He was very lucky to leave the U.S. in one piece…
And as for all those European leaders showing solidarity with the little creep, time for the end of the Marshall Plan and US presence in NATO and Europe.

A very good and informative article by Thoresen, well worth the read. One point he makes is that Crimea, and the break away regions of Donbass, Donetsk, and Luganzk (that have been shelled and many citizens killed by Ukraine forces since 2014) should also have a seat at the “peace table”.
