On the campaign trail, PT did correct something that JD had said in an interview, projecting what PT’s position would be on an issue (I think it was whether he would sign a nationwide abortion ban), and PT corrected the record when he was asked about it, basically saying that Vance was not accurate in speaking for him. I would bet there were private discussions afterwards, about when and how JD would represent PT, to get on the same page.
So in this instance, I believe VP Vance was a good ally, and President Trump wanted him there for a reason, which I would bet they worked out ahead of time. Nice to have a VP who PT trusts to be in sensitive situations like that, rather than just being sent to state funerals and ribbon cuttings.

If that had been Putin’s intention, he certainly possesses the military capability to do so. At the beginning of the operation, he feinted in the direction of Kiev, but then withdrew his forces with no one pursuing them. Clearly, “total conquest” is not his objective.

Putin actually rather cleverly “flipped the script” early in the war.
Unless the defense is completely outmatched, typically the offense takes heavier losses than the defense in any engagement, even when the offense wins.
Putin got the lion’s share of the territory he actually wanted early in the war (don’t underestimate the homefront PR of defending innocent ethnic Russians from the Ukrainian Nazis) and then switched largely to just holding that territory. This allowed him to switch to defense and let the Ukrainians bleed out in offensive after offensive to retake the territory the Russian forces were getting ever more dug into.
That’s one reason the ratio of losses is so out of whack from what a typical invasion/conquest scenario would be… because who’s been on offense and who’s been playing defense swapped early in the conflict and is still operating that way.

Kiev would be more symbolic; Odessa would be more strategic.
But, “a war of attrition, grinding along the entirety of a thousand-kilometer front,” is much more likely to achieve the ultimate goal of demilitarization. Russia’s goal is not “the taking of territory.”
