Canadians visiting the US have been very touchy for years. We have a summer cottage on one of the Great Lakes, just a few miles from “Canadia,” as we like to call it. Boaters come over here and we go over there, short distance. It’s been a paperwork problem since 9-11, and you’re supposed to notify US Immigration & Customs Enforcement if you go there; also cell phones can hit a transmission barrier.
Anyway, there was a Canadian boater visiting our downtown docks a few years back on the 4th of July weekend. As our parade started up, with the band playing a John Philip Sousa march, I heard the guy snarl loudly, “All right, run up the flag, have a parade,” and with that he untied his little boat from the dock and took off!
The week before US Independence Day, we have all sorts of signs and flags up to commemorate Victoria Week. Our national park daily flies the British Union Jack, US 13-Star flag, and Canadian Maple Leaf, to commemorate the 1812 Battle that was fought in nearby waters, and the International Peace Memorial for the longest undefended border in the world! Ms. Freeland might look up the Treaty of Ghent which applies here!
Canadians would obtain a roll of US quarters and use these to tip the restaurant workers/bartenders, sometimes sneaking a “Loony” in with the few coins they would leave. Another thing they would leave behind: trash bags full of Molson and Labatt (empty) beer cans that they’d bring over and drink aboard their boats so that they didn’t have to purchase American beer while on the island, although those two Canadian beers are popular and available for purchase. Just sort of a creepy, passive-aggressive bunch that Ms. Freeland epitomizes to the Nth degree.

Please excuse the length of this post in which I try to briefly explain why I think the Canadians are so riled up.
It starts with America’s credit card being maxed out. Debt is 130% of GDP and the deficit is running about 6-7%/yr. The bond market is getting edgy bc Treasury bought much short term debt, which obvsly rolls more frequently, AND short term interest rates are rising. So debt service, already more than defense, is rising.
Trump is determined to address this problem (the globalists gave up and just went for the wealth grab). However, Trump refuses to go to taxpayers for more money in accordance with his “America First” principles and in recognition that this approach has not worked for 50 yrs. Congress wastes. Reality.
Trump’s team has come up with a way to extract more from the global trading system, which Trump claims is unfair to America. His primary complaints relate to America providing global defense since WWII (accounting for most of our debt), from tariffs and other non-tariff barriers (eg, VAT), and from unfair exchange rates that disadvantage American workers.
Trump’s plan is pretty ingenious but will be controversial.
The first element is to convince foreign holders of US treasuries to exchange them for long term zero coupon bonds with some type of gold payout when the zero matures. This will help to reduce interest expense.
Another piece of the plan is to create a sovereign wealth fund to monetize US assets currently not valued properly on the FED’s balance sheet. Gold marked to market (from $42/oz) might be one asset, Fed-owned land another, potentially assets seized from criminals, potentially royalties from US mineral wealth, revenue from Ukr, etc. This fund would purportedly be used to invest in America, however in reality it would just offset excessive debt and build bond market confidence.
Another component is to increase revenue by eliminating fraud, by downsizing foreign military presence, by charging foreigners for defense, tariffs, etc. Cut spending, find revenue.
Another critical piece of the plan is to renegotiate exchange rates to make American labor competitive again and hence to reindustrialize America. Accomplishing this will be hard and may involve tariffs, taxing foreign treasuries, and capital controls. Many expect capital controls to force investing into America.
With this background, one can view the discussions with China and Russia in an entirely new light. One can also see why the countries that will essentially be forced into paying up are upset.
This plan is not without considerable risk. However, there is no competitor to the dollar, which settles $5T in trade every single day. Nothing else comes close. The danger of the $-based trade system blowing up could be viewed as FMAD – Financial Mutually Assured Destruction. For America, the risk is worth bc if we do nothing, we will meet a brick wall.
This Trump grand plan is what is underneath all the current controversy in the gold market right now. It seems the US is repatriating its gold from London which is causing stress because London seems to have been in the habit of selling one chuck of gold to multiple buyer.

This doesn’t mean nothing else can’t come close. Kazan had a working group to develop an alternative for the BRICS trade group, which is most of the world, including Russia and China. That’s in process, but right now, Putin and Xi are playing nice. Complacency in this area will be very dangerous for the US. One of the reasons why Russia escaped the West’s sanctions is because Putin directed Russia to develop a SWIFT alternative almost a decade ago. That’s one of the main reasons why the West’s sanctions cos Ukraine, haven’t even touched Russia. The danger of an alternate to the USD coming into play is why Trump made his threat to the BRICS a few weeks ago. Because Trump knows its real, and he knows what it would mean if it did.
Nobody else wants the burden of a reserve currency and Putin himself said he is happy to use dollars, but America won’t let him. Jay Powell has also stated that the US would not oppose another reserve currency. It’s worth pointing out that using the power of the reserve currency in the Ukraine failed, utterly, to have any effect on Russia’s ability to prosecute the war. All it accomplished was to ensure America’s trading partners minimize the amount of US treasuries they hold.. out of fear that the US might seize them.
Don’t think Russia, think China. China would be happy to anchor the world reserve, because it’s not interested in war it’s interested in commerce (check its history going back a thousand years).
That’s where we’re shaping up as, unless and until the US deals with its sovereign debt problem which is degrading the USD as we type and why central banks and smart money people are so interested in gold and precious etc, right now.
The mercantilists prefer not to implement reserve currencies. And BRICS has made no actual progress on implementing one for this very reason. The best hope for an alternative is probably bitcoin, which is 10-20 yr down the road at best. No American should fear losing the dollar and with it our ability export inflation to the rest of the world.
Nevertheless, Trump is forging a new trade world order and if he succeeds, uS wealth will increase but the dollar will buy less imports.
Personally if Trump can get us socks that don’t immediately get holes in them, I’ll be happy.

1n 2006. BRICS was formed to build a way for nations to trade without using the USD.
In 2006 The USD was used in 75% of All world trade exchanges. Today the USD use in world trade has fallen to 58% of all exchanges. BRICS makes up just over 40% of the World’s Gross Domestic Product.
That is some serious competition.
Weaponizing the USD by Sanctions, Tariffs, and other means, will not, and Does Not help the USD standing in World Trade.
One of the reasons Inflation is red hot is because the USD is being used less and less in world trade.

But just a correction, IMO. BRICS was not formed to compete with the USD, it was a reaction to the fact the Western Bretton-Woods institutions have been weaponised and used, as weapons, against nations the West didn’t approve of. “Confessions of an Economic Hitman” is a great read on this. BRICS was a reaction against this and it has evolved into a trade bloc that is independent of the West and IMO, will eventually support institutions that compete with then supplant things like the IMF and the World Bank, et al. The global sign-up list for BRICS is impressive and grows every year. This should be a sign for we who live in the West, that our way of life is changing and we need to deal with this, or suffer the consequences if we don’t. Word to the wise. Kinda thing.
Sorry… I forgot to highlight a key point. The exchange rate adjustments Trump wants to make will be most painful to Canada, Mexico, and China, the countries with whom we trade the most. If one totals all of the concessions Trump wants from Canada, his comment that Canada would be far better off as state #51 makes a whole lot more sense. Canadians can maintain their freedom under the loopy Freelund or they can maintain their standard of living as Americans. And, bonus, if rhey become Americans, all that British owned Canadian real estate would become America’s. Now you know why Freelund is breathing fire and demonizing America. The game is getting rough.
There is another choice. Canada and Mexico can join BRICS.
