I have long said the only thing President Trump needs to do is to tell Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy he needs to hold an election to showcase his public support for his position. After that, Trump can do nothing except wait for the result and the winner of the election to come to him. Then, engage with Putin on a resolution to the conflict.
Would Zelenskyy win the election? I don’t think so, but who knows. Today a video surfaces where Zelenskyy was directly asked why he has cancelled all Ukraine elections, and would he restart them now. Zelenskyy said no, he would not hold elections because holding an election would mean a pause in the warfighting and that would be a win for Russia.

Who would be allowed to vote in a “Ukrainian” election or referendum? How about the citizens of Donetsk, Lukhansk, Crimea, etc. that have been annexed or occupied by Russia? Do only “ethnic Ukrainians” get to vote, but not ethnic Russians, and other minority group members living within the borders of Ukraince that used to be considered citizens? What about the millions of refugees living in exile? Some are in Europe, some in Russia, some elsewhere. With all the deaths, destruction, and displacement, how can there be an accurate list of qualified voters.
Putting Zelensky’s arguments aside, holding a credible election in Ukraine right now is not really possible. I support the idea that Ukraine needs to have legitimately elected officials and a referendum on war/settlement issues. Right now, whoever controls the rules and does the counting will “win”, and those on the “losing” side will not accept the results, so nothing is achieved except shattering whatever unity there is.

Donetsk, Lukhansk, Zaporizhzhia, & Kherson already voted to join Russia. Crimea did earlier. They’re not going back.
So it’s the rest of the oblasts that only matters.
Probably Russia would agree to a ceasefire in the remaining provinces for voting to occur, so long as Ukraine suspended Russian city drone attacks on the same weekend.

A decapitation strike would be the most humane thing to do for the sake of ALL parties involved, both on the battlefields and in the negotiations.
