My dad worked three jobs when I was a kid. That is what brought us to middle class.
My dad worked one blue collar job and they bought a brand new home. We were “middle class.” We bought a brand new car when I was in 3rd grade. My mom stayed home.
Our neighbors were an engineer at GE and a Hospital Administrator on the other side.
An often-unobserved benefit of a good economy and strong middle class. Communities were a true melting pot across income and education and profession. The doctor, wealthy farmer and mechanics children all went to the same school. Played on the same teams, went to the same churches.
Wealth and success now self-segregate, furthering divisions.

I have been sounding the alarm on this as long as I have been posting here. Mike Rowe has been warning of this for a couple decades.
Y’all shouldn’t get snooty with me because I point out that this issue is about to come to a head.
I work in the construction field. Just as an example – a roof crew gets paid $70/square to tear off, haul off, and install a new roof. A 30 sq roof (36-39 with cut off waste, starter strip, and ridge). So about $2500 in labor split between 6 guys (after they pay dump fees, and pay the crew manager). Each guy makes about 300 a day regardless of it being 110° or 40°. It is back breaking work. I was a white guy that did it 20 years ago. Now, the contractor the does the subbing out to the roof crews has to make money to pay his repair guys, office ladies, mortgage, taxes, insurance, and his own salary. So the labor mark up is 50% (material is about 30% mark up). If the contractor hires a white American crew, it’ll double labor costs. So that $3750 in labor now becomes $7500 in labor. So your insurance costs increase, building costs increase. A class 4 roof today at 36 squares costs about $16k. Now it’ll cost $20k. Does that 25% extra cost just magically get paid with fairy dust?
I’m not saying we shouldn’t deport, but folks need to realize they will absolutely see a 25-50% increase in the cost of almost everything from food to building things and products. Those costs don’t just trickle down. Meaning you won’t see a 25-50% increase in the middle class jobs or quality of life. In fact, our lives will become more expensive relative to incomes BUT my personal opinion is that if we are to survive it’s a hard road we need to trod.
What about framing crews? Pavers, tile, stucco, siding, blockmasons, drywall and painters?
Those people will still be available, the difference is they will be here legally.
That is 100% on point. In Oklahoma my painters, window contractors, and my siding installers are the only Caucasian guys that do work for me. Framers, masonry/concrete, insulation, roofing, gutters, insulation, etc are all from south of the border. To be fair – the company I subcontract roofing out to is 2nd generation Hispanic American. Born and raised here, and speaks English like normal Americans. With that said, the guys he sends to jobs for the physical labor are probably 50/50 citizen/illegal. About half dont even have a Spanish accent (meaning likely born here), and the other half barely speak English if at all.
The easiest solution – make e-verify mandatory then make it a felony for breaking that law – 1 year jail time, and compensatory damages equal to the income derived. Essentially remove and profit and therefore motive.
We have been cheating the system too long. We have created it to the point of hurting ourselves and the next generations.
I agree wholeheartedly. It will take 30+ years, realistically, to dig out. That’s assuming no major interruptions. Since life doesn’t occur in a vacuum, there will be disruptions. So it’ll likely be the end of my life (I’m late 30s) likely before it gets back to what it can be.

For what it’s worth, I was amazed when I moved from Houston to Portland. Contractors worked hard, we’re professional, spoke English and were proud of their trade and craftsmanship. Do we pay more out here for that? Yes, but I have higher quality work that last longer. I want them to make a livable wage, they can do what I can’t.
Quality has virtually no impact on geographic location. All my work is quality – roof, siding, windows, gutters, copper work, etc. I have never ran an advertisement in my life. I work purely on word of mouth – recommendation. So quality depends on what lengths you go to as a homeowner to find a quality contractor.

“Have” is the key word. It’s a fact, part of the American dream was when you have made it financially, you wanted your kids to make it into the white collar/managerial classes.

Yes, you are correct. There is a massive rebalancing coming in the job / employment market. If allowed to happen organically, it will provide both pain and opportunity. The thing which must be allowed to regrow, is simply this: social mobility. It must be possible, and people must see and believe it is possible, when possessing adequate motivation, to work your way (and your family’s way) up socioeconomically.
I won’t bore you with my grandparents’, parents and my own specifics, but briefly: night watchman ==> union skilled tradesman ==> nuclear engineer. This MUST be possible. The alternative is SHTF.
If the entry jobs and many of the skilled trades jobs are all occupied by underpaid illegals, and the tech / STEM jobs are all occupied by H1B, we are done. The Chamber of Commerce types are going to need to be made to sit down and STFU.

Good analysis. Some growing pains and lots of opportunity should happen if this is done right. It’s a wait and see game right now in a lot of ways and I don’t believe the Trump administration is unaware of the issues being raised here. They are not the types to just spout things off without a solid plan, including reassessing how things are going as they move along the agenda.
Hyperventilating and speculating at this point are not very productive. They have been in charge for 48 hours and what has been declared and being implemented already is beyond any administration in history. They have been working on their plans for awhile I’m sure but now they start with his campaign promises first and then flesh them out as they get activated.Its an immense undertaking and the Dems will throw as many roadblocks in their way as they can.
It all won’t go smoothly because nothing this complex and huge ever does, but we need to remember SD and his cautions to not let the ‘perfect get in the way of the good.’
Give the Trump administration a chance to make things happen and to correct things that come up that are not working. We also have to realize not everything we want to see get done will be achieved. It’s impossible in only 4 years but PTrump will make the effort to put America on solid ground again for now and for the future generations as he’s already shown us by his actions the last two days.
It’s also taken decades of corruption to get us here. It won’t be un-done overnight.

The other day, an able-bodied couple came into my store and purchased two giant Alaskan crab legs for just under $90. That is all they bought. They paid for it with EBT.

Exactly. There should be some requirements that are adhered to if you are collecting welfare, are healthy and able bodied and using food stamps. There is no one here to work at handyman jobs now. All the young are loafing about on drugs. I spent over $1000 labor to redo my lanai screens from Ian. (Had to be done three times due to incompetence.) I bought the “no see ‘ um” screen roll on Amazon (3 day delivery) shipped from Colorado and then waited and waited and waited to find someone. SWFL had no screening here. In Florida. It took two years. I can’t find someone to cut down a small dead tree for less than $1000. I have a 40 year old mobile home. Waited a year for an estimate for shutters. They returned an estimate for the wrong style shutters. I gave up. I am surrounded by drugs and homeless people on bicycles.

I heard a caller call into my local talk radio and mention that PDJT’s “Golden Age” reference was to sack the (Un) Federal Reserve which is a federally charted private bank owned and run by criminals, and bring back a Gold standard. I thought it was an interesting line of speculation and shows many more of our fellow Americans are thinking much like us here at the Treehouse.
I have heard over and over that part of the restoration and reclaiming of our Republic has to do with some sort of change in the money system. All other Presidents who attempted to alter the money system were assassinated, impeached or died in office. Several powerful men who were against the starting of the Federal Reserve went down with the Titanic. He who controls the money controls the world.
I have no hard proof of any upcoming changes to the money system. I do believe things are lining up that way though. It would make sense to return to an asset backed currency instead of our current fiat-based currency. Put everything on a level playing field in order to stop the currency manipulators who have been ripping us off for years.
More than anything, President Trump hates getting ripped off. With him as our Commander in Chief, we all benefit from his hating getting ripped off. We will all stop getting ripped off.
If you noticed in his inaugural address, he mentioned a return to the sovereignty of our country. Why would he say that if we weren’t already a sovereign nation?
When President Trump refers to the Golden Age, people dismiss it as hype and salesmanship from the Great Promoter in Chief. I don’t think it’s just hype. I believe he is sending a clear message to us all that Greatness is truly returning. We are entering new territory, a new age.

Five of my children work for the feds. One is single, one couple has kids that are grown, but the remaining couple (Trump voters and very conservative) will face a hardship in getting three kids under five to and from daycare and return to the office.
If they lived closer we would help even though we’re watching another grandchild already.

The point of working locally is to highlight that is where we can most easily affect change, as opposed to for example the national level, and it focuses on the importance of the local level.
Being successful locally affects change at the state and ultimately the federal level.

The Episcopal Church has fallen down so far and so badly.
The National Cathedral has been part of traditions formed over the years with good hearts that wanted to bring together all Americans to pray together.
The idea of having the new President and Vice-President and their spouses and families visit the National Cathedral is a beautiful tradition but I think the current leadership at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC and perhaps at the national headquarters in New York City have lost their way.
You invite the new President and Vice-President as your guests. Did you forget that when you invite people to be your guests that you do not scold and berate them as they sit down to your table, to break bread so to speak in being there to share in Communion and fellowship?
You invite a person to your home and you consider it an honor that they visit your home – it is totally outside the realm of proper behavior to treat your guest in a way meant to scold or berate them or instruct them in what they should do or to impugn their character as they sit there, to indicate that they are wanting and in need of your excellent instruction, that none of them have any natural instinct to be kind and good.
If it is the policy of the Episcopal Church of America to foster the continued influx of illegal aliens into our country and you want to throw YOUR financial support in that direction, that is your business, that of your parishioners who have made the Church and built the church and keep it going.
If you want to act in an oblivious manner to the assault on our country that has been taking place with the injection of hundreds of thousands, millions, of people into our country that cannot be readily absorbed, where the illegal aliens are being used as cheap labor, where FEMA funds were being used to finance this influx rather than taking care of Americans in North Carolina, for example, then you are not as well educated as one used to generally think that Episcopalians were! One of my grandmothers was a very devout Episcopalian from her teenage years; her brother was an Episcopal priest and then a rector. Grandmother was in the Daughters of the King and the Altar Guild. She made her rounds to shut-ins every Saturday (my Mother and I both at different times accompanied her on her rounds and saw what it meant to the dear people she would visit; she would always bring each of them a little cheerful gift). She read the Bible every day and clung to it closely during World War II when her husband and two sons were serving. She read Abraham Lincoln’s Devotional every year. She had an ongoing and busy correspondence writing to people, remembering their birthdays, writing words of encouragement. She was an educated woman, having put herself through college graduating with honors – summa cum laude – her major was mathematics. She tutored and had jobs and sent money home to help support her parents while she was away at college (her father had lost his eyesight due to glaucoma just as she was getting ready to leave for college). My beautiful, brilliant and devout Grandmother would be quite distressed at the behavior of the Bishop today at the National Cathedral, I am quite sure of it.
Sadly, I think the Church of my Episcopal Grandmother is not the same that nourished her through her life (the other one was my Catholic Grandmother – both Grandmothers I am fortunate to say endeavored to impart to me how important it was in life to have faith).
I hope the Episcopal Church can stop and examine their leadership and consider whether it is the best possible . . . and also issue an apology to our new President and Vice-President, their spouses and families who were subjected to the bizarre treatment as guests of the National Cathedral!

Most recent was last Sunday in a DOC. Saw a lady walk upfront. She was dressed as if going to Wal-Mart, grocery shopping or running errands. Only later did I realize she was presiding over the service. This is a high school grad I was told later. Never used Scripture and ‘talked’….
Told my wife on way home, NOT doing women-led funerals any more. I’ll attend visitations and skip any future services.

The religion of my birth will be in my heart forever but the administering of men that has warped my religion has kept me out of the services. I still go sit in my Church because I love the physical presence of a Church, a house of God and I speak with God there through my prayers, but I also do the same walking down the street or through the park or forests amongst all the wonderful things God created on Earth for us.
Yes, Jesus wanted us to follow him through his Church, he created it, but perhaps not through the Churches, aka religions, of this day. We each choose our path to Jesus. If you walk with him in complete faith, if you follow his teachings in your daily lives, you will be known by Him and He will hear you I fully believe.

So, IMHO, there needs to be a major investigation of 2020 and current election methods. We can’t just let this go away because President Trump was reelected. If states do not clean up there election processes to follow our laws then their electors should not count.

I knew nothing about nothing back then, literally only 16 years old- but I was horrified at the cups full of meds I witnessed being dumped into these elderly people- many of which were in vegetative states (I thought “what are they trying to do with this body now at this point???)
I know for a fact that using us as guinea pigs for Big Pharma began a long time ago and I truly believe it went on in nursing homes using this completely unaware population to learn what they could and rob Medicare through the over use of these these highly inflated cost pills..
Over the course of my adult life, I then watched this practice become what they’ve done to us out here.. they’ve destroyed our gut health with all these poisons. As soon as you go down this road, it’s like you’ve knocked over the first domino to the beginning of your end for their profits.
That so many people are figuring this out and changing it, looking for alternatives, this is so needed right now.
I feel very much like it’s step ONE of the recovery we need, our health is our own foundation thus the nation’s foundation and it must be strong.

According to the notice issued by Acting OPM Director Charles Ezell, all departments and agencies are to:
Send an agency-wide notice to employees informing them of the closure and asking employees if they know of any efforts to disguise these programs by using coded or imprecise language
Send a notification to all employees of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) offices that they are being placed on paid administrative leave effective immediately as the agency takes steps to close/end all DEIA initiatives, offices and programs.
Take down all outward facing media (websites, social media accounts, etc.) of DEIA offices
Withdraw any final or pending documents, directives, orders, materials and equity plans issued by the agency in response to the now-repealed Executive Order 14035, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility in the Federal Workforce (June 25, 2021)
Cancel any DEIA-related trainings and terminate any DEIA-related contractors
