An interesting last-minute move being discussed by President Trump to NBC in order to give TikTok platform extra time to get in compliance with the law.
NBC is reporting on a phone call with President Trump where he outlines giving TikTok a 90-day extension.
NBC [ …] Trump said he hadn’t made a final decision but was considering a 90-day extension of the Sunday deadline for TikTok’s China-based parent company to sell to a non-Chinese-buyer or face a U.S. ban.
“I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate. You know, it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation,” Trump said in the phone interview.
“If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday,” he said.
A 90-day extension is explicitly allowed for in a bipartisan law made last year under specific conditions. But an extension Monday may not be enough to avoid the app going dark for at least a day, because the current deadline for compliance is Sunday. (read more)
If TikTok has not found a legitimate deal they would accept in the past year, what good is another 90-days?
We are hearing from Barron Trump through Dad, I am afraid.
I have learned from a man who posts on X (Joe Lange) another take on the TikTok ban. He wrote:
“If the threat of Chinese government control over TikTok was real, why would Trump be using TikTok?
“Doesn’t that prove that the threat isn’t real?
“Trump not only used TikTok during his campaign, he gained millions of followers and it surely helped him win many votes from the younger generation.
“And now, literally the day before Trump is inaugurated, TikTok is banned.
All the TikTok users across America are stunned and now looking for Trump to save TikTok.
“All planned?
“Could the timing of this ban be any more perfect?
“The younger generation is shifting quickly away from those three enemy tools of censorship and propaganda.
“They also hate that anybody can monetize their content on TikTok and make a lot of money that they can’t shut down or control.
“And now, Trump is seen as the savior of TikTok and the younger generation’s FREEDOM.
He will gain even more support and the democrats will continue to lose support.
“My guess, is that there is already an Executive Order written and waiting for Trump’s inauguration and signature.
“I also think there is already a deal to purchase TikTok that is just waiting for Trump to take the credit for restoring FREEDOM. Rumor is that Kevin O’Leary already has a deal and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he’s been a huge Trump supporter in the media.
“Trump is getting the younger generation to engage in the restoration of our constitution and the power being given back to the people.”
I admit I had not thought about it from that perspective, and I think his perspective is worth considering.
TikTok went dead so did my server; connected to the internet but “server is not responding” from Friday early afternoon – no TV, computer, phone internet. When I mentioned the coincidence got the tinfoil hat response. TikTok came back online Sunday late afternoon and so did my server. I’ve never been on TikTok but evidently my server hosted it.
