An interesting last-minute move being discussed by President Trump to NBC in order to give TikTok platform extra time to get in compliance with the law.
NBC is reporting on a phone call with President Trump where he outlines giving TikTok a 90-day extension.
NBC [ …] Trump said he hadn’t made a final decision but was considering a 90-day extension of the Sunday deadline for TikTok’s China-based parent company to sell to a non-Chinese-buyer or face a U.S. ban.
“I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate. You know, it’s appropriate. We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation,” Trump said in the phone interview.
“If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday,” he said.
A 90-day extension is explicitly allowed for in a bipartisan law made last year under specific conditions. But an extension Monday may not be enough to avoid the app going dark for at least a day, because the current deadline for compliance is Sunday. (read more)

Also the Tic Tok servers driving their US business are in the US, unlike the other similar Chinese based Apps to whom US TC users are moving over to, with the ability to take their TC history with them, in huge numbers. I think TikTok is a trojan horse for China’s hybrid warfare program. I understand that some people think if TikTok can be banned, X could also be banned. Whether or not that is true, I don’t see the advantage of keeping the app around. There is much filth on it, whereas the Chinese version has none of that. They make sure that Chinese children have positive and healthy online experiences. It’s sad that in the name of liberty we allow our children to be glued to apps that warp the mind at the very least. For adults, it’s different. Adults have more capacity to use judgment and reasoning. Children need a degree of protection based upon their age and level of maturity. I also don’t get why any adult American would want their info scraped by the CCP. I don’t like this first for the obvious reason of the app being a CCP control app. But moreover, the law was passed by Congress, signed by the “president”, and upheld by SCOTUS. Trump isn’t a king, and has no right to Executive Order a law invalid anymore than Biden did. I don’t think tic tok feels like they are going to be forced to sell. They went through this 5 years ago and MSFT was looking to buy and so was Oracle. I was wondering how President Trump would have the authority to extend the date upon which the ban would go into effect since it’s an Act of Congress; turns out that this was a provision in the bill:
The earliest the ban could go into effect if not sold would be January 19, 2025. An additional 90 days could be issued on the deadline.
My understanding though is that the 90-day extension was supposed to be conditioned upon the POTUS determining that the company was making progress toward a sale … which as Sundance points out, has not been happening.

There have been several credible bidders for TikTok. The most well known is Kevin OLeary (aka “Mr. Wonderful” from the show Shark Tank.) Former Trump Treasury Sec Steve Mnuchin also expressed interest in buying it in a syndication of buyers including Walmart and Oracle (Larry Ellison.)
The roadblock is not buyers, it’s the seller. The Chinese company that owns TikTok (ByteDance) has not been willing to sell.
The value of TikTok is in its bundling of two important assets:
The branding without the algorithm would rapidly lose value. User experience would change and users would drift away.
The algorithm without the branding could recreate itself under a guise and different name.
The algorithm is the sticking point.
That is probably because if a buyer were able to examine the proprietary algorithm they would likely discover some very bad stuff, like how China is using it to gather intelligence and to manipulate people.
(The same resistance to sunlight also apply to proprietary algorithms making up most of the value of Google, Facebook/Meta/Instagram and other well known sites. But those sites are only trying to maximize profit. China is trying to “prepare the battlefield.”)
This issue again highlights how seriously information warfare has become. AI can be viewed as a means to further attacks on adversaries as well as to harden a society from outside attacks. Sad, because the simple truth serves the entire world much better.
