Glenn Greenwald appears for an interview with Tucker Carlson on the topic of the Biden administration directly making a decision as they exit the White House to attack Russia and provoke a direct war between U.S-led NATO and Russia.
Greenwald notes the accurate context of the recent decision to provide, launch, target and direct ATACMS missiles to hit targets inside Russia. This is not the U.S. providing Ukraine with weapons for use. This is the USA using the auspices of Ukraine geography to launch missiles into Russia that can only be launched, directed and targeted by U.S-NATO members.
Ukraine does not have the targeting systems or satellites to use these longer-range ATACM missiles for strikes into Russia. On an ancillary note, having spent three months inside Russia this summer and having the associated contacts therein, the Russian government is currently in the process of shutting down their nation in preparation for what comes next. Longer-range missiles have been used by U.S-NATO inside Ukraine. The ATACMS originate from the U.S-NATO and they are deployed with the targeting of U.S-NATO.
Russian President Vladimir Putin clearly stated that if such weapons were used, Russia will not pretend or ignore that this is direct provocative engagement by NATO against Russia. Putin is currently organizing affairs inside Russia prior to his response.

This situation prompts me – again – why in hell we wait two months between the conclusion of a federal election and the assumption of office of the winners. Other “advanced” nations have a two DAY period between election results and the transfer of power. This eight week delay gives carte blanche to troublemakers.
The supposed reason is because January is too cold for assassins to want to cause trouble. Hah. I doubt it.
Recall that Inauguration Day was originally March 4th, it was changed to January 20th by the ratification of the 20th Amendment in 1933.
Interesting that it is typically the “right” that complains about fighting “with one arm tied behind our backs” going back to Mig sanctuaries and Yalu River bridges in Korea. That thinking seems to extend to “nuke them ’till they glow” in Iran if not Gaza.
From a theater commander’s perspective it makes sense to employ deep fires against enemy high priority targets. I’m not sure it’s reasonable for Russia to assume its territory would be “off limits” in a war with Ukraine. Though from a tactical standpoint seems to me SEAD should be given higher priority.
From a targeting perspective I don’t see much about ATACMS mission planning, but as a ballistic trajectory I assume it comes down mostly to choice of missile (unitary warhead vice submunition) and aimpoint with GPS/inertial nav to correct for trajectory errors due to meteo effects. So US/NATO involvement probably comes down to target identification, air defense, and munition effectiveness calculation. Have seen nothing on how targets are prioritized or authorized for attack.
Haven’t seen anything indicating HIMARS or MLRS batteries have organic fire direction capability for ATACMS, but assuming Ukraine batteries have been trained for GMLRS fire direction I don’t see handling ATACMS as some sort of show-stopper without “boots on the ground” support. Also firing ATACMS at short range shouldn’t have any difference that I can see at the Battery or Battalion level compared to long/max range so I don’t see the impact of the targeting on the systems themselves.

It’s not a war with Ukraine, is it? Ukraine has no ability to hit targets inside Russia. I don’t think it is reasonable for the US and NATO to fire missiles into Russia and expect the Russians to pretend that “Ukraine” is the one doing it…. when everyone and his dog knows it is not.
Ukraine has been hitting targets in Russia for a long while using drones.
Up until these ATACMS/Storm Shadow events they were being fired within Ukraine both short and long range with targeting apparently being done as per US/NATO manuals. Putin accepted that Ukraine was within its rights to fire at any target within their country with or without foreign help. Russian forces in Ukraine just had to suck it up.
That changed with missile/drone strikes into Russia. Putin effectively accepted that any weapon system could be used as long as the Ukrainians could do it themselves but any using for example non Ukrainian classified targeting data would be regarded as US/UK/NATO direct involvement.
I am not sure why Ukraine needed a special data pack to hit a fixed target that hadn’t moved in decades in Russia. If it had been a command HQ, a good ATACMS target, it would have needed that data.
It is the US military that gives the data to Ukraine limiting their targets. Maybe we will see their target selection limited to targets that the Russians can accept didn’t need special data i.e. the military quietly keeps a lid on it.
It seems so far that the Russians have more problems downing Storm Shadows with their unpredictable travel as opposed to the ATACMS which is ballistic as you say and they have SAMs designed for that. Maybe any reply will be aimed at the Brits rather than the US.
Most likely the Russians will reply like for like and, as there are no nukes in Ukraine, that means conventional weapons.

What the Neocon committee known as Joe Biden are probably doing by authorizing these strikes is trying to set up a narrative aimed at preserving their reputation within the circles in which they operate in order to preserve their future employment prospects. I’m sure they fully realize that their little Ukraine Project is headed inexorably for spectacular failure, and I suspect they realize it’s going to end this way because they f%#$ed it up at every level: they underestimated Russia’s economic resilience, they underestimated Russia’s political and social stability, they underestimated Russia’s military capacity, they completely misunderstood where political power in Russia truly resides (they thought a mythical class of politically active oligarchs within Russia would be hit by sanctions, turn on Putin and oust him), they overestimated Western military industrial capacity, they overestimated the efficacy of Western weapons technology, they overestimated their ability to manipulate Western public opinion, and they got a great many other things spectacularly wrong.
What they don’t want is to have their failure laid at their own feet where it belongs. They want to pass off their failure on someone else – preferably a political adversary. By authorizing these missile strikes, I think the neocons want to set up the narrative that they did everything they could to ensure Ukraine’s (i.e., their own) victory, and that the fault for Ukraine’s ultimate defeat lies with the failures of others (Trump, for example) who simply lacked the will or the insight to do what it would have taken for the Ukraine project to succeed. Later, assuming we haven’t all been annihilated in a nuclear holocaust and assuming Ukraine doesn’t completely collapse in an unmistakably obvious manner between now and January 20th, I expect Neocons will try to rewrite history by claiming that when they left office, Ukraine was not defeated and was undergoing a resurgence while Russia was steadily growing weaker and more desperate, and that if only the Neocon strategy had continued to be pursued, Ukraine would have been victorious.
If Biden himself actually has actually played any role in the decision to authorize these strikes aside from providing the official rubber stamp, I would presume his motivation is simply to create a mess that he thinks Donald Trump will find very hard, if not impossible to clean up, so that he fails campaign promise to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine.
I think Putin understands that this provocation, as dangerous as it is, is the byproduct of US domestic politics and not an attempt by a unified adversary to bring about the destruction of the Russian state. I therefore don’t think Putin will respond in a manner likely to bring about a general military confrontation with the US or NATO.
The real danger here is that the Russians (or any of us, for that matter) cannot be certain, when the missiles start flying into their territory, what warheads those missiles contain. For all anyone knows, maybe the Neocons will have found a way to smuggle nuclear warheads into Ukraine, put them in those missiles and be crazy and stupid enough to attempt to defeat Russia with a nuclear first strike. Whether to respond under that assumption will require a judgment the Russians will have minutes at most to make. This is a profoundly dangerous and stupid position the Neocons have maneuvered us all into.

Then there is also the movie, “Snowden” directed by Oliver Stone which delves into those days in Hong Kong with Glenn Greenwald and documentarian Laura Poitras (whose documentary Citizenfour was about the perilous and tense days in Hong Kong). Stone’s movie opens with the days in Hong Kong but also delves into Snowden’s life and experiences at the CIA, NSA and as a contractor and the events that brought him to the decision he made.
When you watch “Snowden” and see the scene where he learns how to use Facebook to find a “hook” to help the CIA manipulate a targeted individual, you learn how Facebook was and is used to rummage around in the personal lives of people, no password required!
