This is perhaps one of the most predictable nominations, although everyone was wondering if it would be agency specific or just the entire apparatus of USA health. It’s the whole enchilada!
President Trump has announced his nomination of Robert F Kennedy Jr to become the next Secretary of Health and Human Services.

In this position RFK Jr has promised to change the construct of FDA, NIH, USDA and all the subsidiary agencies to remove the corporate influence that has corrupted them. The goal is to change the food system by removing harmful additives, challenge the influence of the multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical lobbying industry, and restore the function of public health.
It is a massive task, but one that RFK Jr says he has been developing and planning for many years. This is in his wheelhouse and Making America Healthy Again would be an incredible legacy initiative for both President Trump and Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.
They will both be targeted by the multinational corporations and lobbyists, but they will be bolstered by the overwhelming support of the American people. I am looking forward to this initiative as it develops and rolls out.

Side note—In 1983, my hospital sent me to the Annual American Burn Association convention in New Orleans…it was a fabulous learning opportunity where new procedures and products were presented. I learned a lot and met a lot of nurses from all over the country. One thing I remember…Bellvue in NYC, did not give those poor patients anything stronger than Tylenol, for dressing changes…no matter how big the wounds were or how painful….they did not want to get them ‘addicted’….good grief…the only time a burn patient is pain free is when they get anesthesia for debriding or grafting…surgery.
The drug companies had ‘open suites’ in the hotel…I forget which hotel chain, was right next to the Superdome…
The food was gourmet and top shelf alcohol and mixed drinks…all free…you could go from suite to suite (company to company) and feel like it was the pub crawl on Key West…
Breakfast…was also provided…
The free bees like totes, pads of paper, ceramic coffee mugs, pens…umbrellas, samples of new products (one of which is still used today)……you name it and it was there from the drug companies…for free…

That was before the entire medical community flipped on a dime and decided to prescribe opioids for everything (backed by the drug makers like Perdue Pharma – maker of OxyContin) because they suddenly and without real evidence concluded they were no longer addictive.
End result – the Opioid crisis.
In 1991 I started working in a regional office for Hoechst-Roussel Pharmaceuticals. We always got shipped to us what they were taking to the doctors’ offices as freebies. It was just amazing. Also we heard about the lunches they provided to the doctors’ offices too. Nice!
1996-’97, worked for a group of 4 psychiatrists, 2 full time nurses, and a cadre of social workers for a government contracted (state) outpatient mental health facility. The clientele had diagnoses from mild depression all the way up to intractable OCD and schizophrenia. At least once every two weeks or so, the various drug companies would sponsor a “workshop” or “seminar”, which included a huge gourmet spread for lunch for all professional staff. At that time the number was probably at least 30 people. The whole office would usually shut down and not see patients for about 2 hours during these events. It had to be incredibly expensive to put on a spread for that many. The main goal, of course, was to promote their newest drug for whatever mental health condition. Even the front office was regaled with morning coffee, donuts, pens, notepads, and assorted other “perks”…of course, with the name of the drug printed on the items. The marketing budget for these drug companies must have been astronomical! We in the front office got sick of the drug reps at our counter delaying seeing of actual patients! The worst part for me, was realizing that even doctors I respected went along with this BS at the expense of patients that would have otherwise been seen and helped.
Doctors should be free to prescribe safe, FDA-approved medications for off label uses as they see fit. This was inexplicably prohibited for drugs like HCQ and IVM during Covid, even though some 40 percent of prescriptions are administered for off label uses.
There is far too much regulation of doctors these days, when they should be free to treat their patients without undue influence from profit-driven big pHarma and insurance companies.
Big PHarma should *not* be permitted to wine and dine healthcare providers in exchange for promoting their medications.
This must be done! And ban hospitals from doing advertising too. Just watch anything on TV, bigpharma and hospirals have taken over the ads on TV. The hospitals play this precious piano music while they show the doctors and nurses that all agreed to lie about covid being a threat. Only one other country does this filthy kind of advertising, and that is New Zealand. Decades ago it was illegal for any hospitals to advertise, they saw it for what it was, grifting for money over your personal health. RFK should be very tough on this, good pick.
I remember when beer and liquor commercials ran where drug ads run now. As I recall they got stopped for… encouraging dangerous behaviors and contributing to the delinquency of minors or something equally self righteous sounding.

Before aspirin (& other prescription drugs), people used plants, herbs, etc with medicinal properties for healing & medicine. Aspirin came from white willow bark.
Back in the early 90’s, besides using all sorts of “alternative medicine” I worked in the vitamin section of a health food store. I learned even more there and have been much healthier doctoring myself (with no side effects). In 35 years, I think I’ve only been to a doctor one time (not including visits to a dentist..), not including times I’ve been sent to a doctor when I was injured on the job & covered by workmen’s comp.
So I am very excited, hopeful, & looking forward to what he can accomplish. And, hopefully soon, Big Pharma, Big Ag, hospitals, etc will start having splodey heads too!

Currently, HHS employees who are an inventor on a patent receive royalties. This must change. Their work is funded by the Federal government and pays their salaries. In industry, when you are an inventor on a patent, the full rights to the patent are owned by the company you work for. I’d like to see our food processed in the US, to the extent that it needs processing. Harvesting produce or butchering meat and then sending that to China for processing before returning it never made sense to me.
One thing to keep in mind here is that the laws and regulations governing foods is a total cluster! HHS does not have full control. FDA regulates food without meat (<0.5% meat), while USDA has jurisdiction on products containing meat (>0.5%). Then there is food containing alcohol (>0.5% by vol.) which is under the authority of ATF. Then there are more exceptions where some aspects of food is under Dept. of Commerce (poultry, including eggs, fish, seafood,…). Then there is milk and other products which are governed by the States. And then there are labeling laws, … You get the picture.
What is needed is a new law so that all food is consolidated under the jurisdiction of one agency. Can I dream? Something for DOGE?

My son recently decided not to vax the new baby for anything, considering who knows what is really in there. Informed choice as he is a health care professional.
I remember being vaccinated for smallpox and polio ONLY in the 50s. Even my millennial kids in the 80s and early 90s only had MMR, DTP and polio vaccines, as I recall.
Quick search on Tetanus shows in the 40s there were only 500-600 (!!!) cases nationwide annually. Since vaccinating routinely, we are down to… 50-100 cases annually!
So after bazillions of doses worth bazillions in pharmaceutical profits for the last 80 years, the incidence per 100,000 has dropped from from around 0.4 to 0.05. Seriously?

I would like to see health insurance, and health insurance companies abolished in favor of personal health accounts that cannot be touched by government. When the doctor has to deal directly with the patient, prices would fall by at least 50% if not more, and medications should fall by 80%

I’m old enough to remember a time when it was NOT uncommon to NOT have health insurance.
At one time, people paid to see the doctor and usually the doctor gave drugs, etc to those patients. Also, payments were made to the hospital when necessary.
There was a time that companies would lure competent employees in with a benefit of “health insurance”, etc. That was long before the government got involved in the “cradle to grave” business, which manifested itself in the late 1980’s.
For the records our children cost us $20./each. I was in a private room for a minimum of 3 days, second child-5 days. Celebration dinner was served : Steak, Lobster, Champagne, and accompanied vegetables and dessert. I served morning coffee in bed, the baby was brought in to be fed and the nurse cleansed the baby, and allowed Momma to rest.
My care also included pre-natal and post-natal care.
Yes, that was $20.00 per child out of pocket cost to us, because it was a company employee benefit.
I tell that reality story to young folks today and they can’t believe it.

In an Italian pharmacy, she paid just over $3.00 for a prescription for the same medication, strength and quantity which on a popular discounting app in the US is over $80. Retail is higher than that. Our government and elected officials have done this to us.
We pay for the “free” healthcare and cheap medicine in countries that champion socialism. American taxpayers are the “other people’s money” that fuels their socialism, and they will run us dry.

I think you’re thinking of Adderall, or antidepressants. I taught a kid who couldn’t sit still and caused so much chaos in the classroom the parents finally put him on Adderall. He became the zombie you describe. Antidepressants more commonly (Zoloft, etc) seem to cause the psychotic breaks seen in many school shooters. Adderall amps them up, but the antidepressants seem to bring out the inner psycho.
Adderall sucks because it was specifically designed for the school setting to be long-lasting enough (~8 hours) that the school nurse was not tasked with the legally and logistically fraught process of coordinating in-school dosing for numerous kids when the regular-release, “old-school” Ritalin would wear off 4 hours after Mom dosed the kid at home, and therefore 2-1/2 hours into the schoolday. So Adderall was designed for the CONVENIENCE of the INSTITUTION – not for optimum health results.
Adderall has a markedly different effect, with harsh and, in my opinion, mentally damaging rushes of high-and-low mental and physical energy. Kids who are 28-year-old adults still seek it out and take it like candy.
Ritalin is old, and was child’s play. Used correctly, in small doses, it worked well for ADD, and wasn’t highly abused. Adderall is a different monster: a specific school-day-based workaround – a custom-designed Big-Pharma/Big School kludge. still wreaking havoc on a generation.
Kind of like Mexican brown dirtweed from the ’70s, compared to rocketsmash high-THC hydroponic mindmelt nuggets of today.
To clarify, when Ritalin is used on a hyper student who actually has ADD and needs, it, the student calms down. If you give Ritalin to a kid and the kid becomes hyper, then the kid did NOT have ADD, and the Riltalin was counterproductive.
But Adderall changed the game because the long-term dose had a big “rush” during the first couple hours, maybe 4 good, stable hours during cruise altitude, then 2 hours of hard crash: resulting in an unpredictable, unstable.
I tried to talk several parents (and recently a late 20’s young friend) OUT of Adderall, and to try small diagnostic doses of immediate-release, 4-hour Ritalin, but not one single one would ever listen. Adderall became a religion, and I never saw one good result from its “rocket ride” 8-hour effect.
