Senator John Thune has been groomed by Mitch McConnell to be his replacement for decades. Thune’s ascension to the role of Senate Majority Leader is essentially a foregone conclusion.
Senator Thune will carry the full support of roughly 15-to-20 senate DeceptiCons (deceptive conservatives), and perhaps a dozen more squishy ones in the middle who want great committee positions. The important dynamic that comes into play now is Senate Committee Chairman “leverage” for Donald Trump’s nominees.
Earlier today on CNBC Senator John Thune discussed the upcoming secret ballot election for Senate Majority Leader. WATCH (prompted):

Essentially, this is Thune’s gentle first shot requesting President Trump “stay out of” the senate caucus decision. Likely, what matters most to President Trump is getting his nominees past the Republican majority confirmation process. Thune was in previous talks with President Trump several months ago, and again several weeks ago in Mar-a-Lago.
Senator Thune doesn’t want President Trump to put his finger on the scale. If matters of the Senate are left alone, Thune ascends – period. However, Thune isn’t stupid and would like Trump to support him. Essentially, Thune would welcome intervention so long as the intervention came with an endorsement.
Thune wants to be Senate Majority Leader. President Trump wants all of his ‘advise and consent’ nominees to glide through confirmation.
We should look for President Trump to endorse Thune; generally, that would indicate terms have been agreed and we can be optimistic. However, if we do not see an endorsement from President Trump, or if Trump endorses someone else, then we should watch out for full DeceptiCon opposition in the Senate from here on out.
A lot of the dynamic exists without any outside influence. The two positioned candidates are John Thune (SD) and John Cornyn (TX). Thune is heavily favored and likely has an easy inside track. The number of MAGA senators is around ten, not really enough to block any organized leadership challenge.
Our MAGA movement benefits from appointments gaining confirmation. President Trump well understands the negotiations and maneuvering that will be needed to get the right committee chairs and members in place.
Mr. Thune, and Corynon have stabbed our President in the back over and again. Scott is a loyal friend.
Trumps response should be: Excuse me: I just did 4 years of rallies traveling this country to get back here , and me and my family have withstood 7 years of government funded persecution that not one of you bastards stepped up to stop. Senate hides consequential votes quite well – cloture, pass, amendments. Hard to parse it out. Kennedy contributed to passing the warrantless FISA act. Helped Lankford bring his immigration sell-out to the floor.
His lifetime conservative score is about 60-65. Reliable vote in favor of spending bills – minibus, foreign aid, continuing resolutions, etc. All Hat no cattle is good description. Not a Murkowski, a Tillis, a Thune, or anywhere near as bad as his fellow LA senator Cassidy – but we should seek better.
You are correct. Lots of blather and funny as hell, and crrtainly good for the sound bite media, but when it comes to supporting MAGA-style principles, Kennedy will be AWOL.
Regarding John Cornyn, if I recall correctly, he supposedly got lots of donations sent to him by way of NRA but actually made decisions counter to Second Amendment protection.

Here you have a family where one person – John Thune – is apparently a snake – the brother, Bob Thune, was a very nice man, a minister at a church here in the desert, Southwest Community Church (which is now known as Southwest Church).
Pastor Thune was a well-liked leader of his church although some people wanted to get back into more debt to expand the building (this was according to an elderly friend of mine who was very active at one time with SWCC); Pastor Thune was insistent that they get the church out of debt and not have that debt (incurred by the original pastor and founder) hanging over their heads. Then there was a parting of the ways and Pastor Thune and his wife were gone from the church and the community.
The church services are conducted in what was originally to be essentially the parish hall, I think – planned as a meeting place where people would gather after services in a church on the premises but the church had never been built – this big hall served well as a church and an event center and so has been used that way, along with a Sunday school facility and a “coffee shop”. It is all on a beautiful corner of Fred Waring Drive and Washington Street and that part of the intersection is in Indian Wells. If you have ever gone to Indian Wells for the tennis tournaments (BNP Paribas-sponsored US Open) you have perhaps seen it on your way into IW from the 10 freeway, it’s before Larry Ellison’s Indian Wells Tennis Garden where the opens have been held and I think they had overflow parking at the church parking lot over the years.
I am just putting in this observation of character, it seemed to me – that Pastor Bob Thune did not want to build up new debt after having paid down the old debt. He was “no fun” my friend said that she thought some of the people thought but she appreciated Bob’s fiscal conservatism and carefulness; she could see he was “up against it” with that group that wanted to expand things.
Senator John Thune, how is he on debt and if he has been perfectly all right really with the shenanigans of the Biden-Harris administration with what has been done to our country and is on board with all the money going to Ukraine, then he is not at all like his brother Bob!

I think the days of “paying off” politicians to get them out of the way has to be a bygone thing –

I would like to see President Trump put out a statement laying out the facts , details and statistics of the election he just won.
Include how many Republican seats were gained in the House and Senate.
Then say, “with the election still fresh in our minds, I endorse……..for Senate Majority leader”.
Perhaps President Trump could suggest they let the Senate races that are undecided resolve before taking this important step.
He should make this statement now. McConnell is rushing the vote before the new Senators are even sworn in so his little lapdog gets installed.

If the election were close I would be far more agreeable with this take.
Given the utterly clear mandate that the American people just handed PDJT he should, & I believe will, endorse someone other than Thune. This is his/our government now not the Thunes or the other Senators. There are plenty of R’s that’ll be coming up for reelection in a down year for our side in 2 years who will be begging PDJT for his endorsement. He is in the drivers seat.

… including, I am PAINED to say, both my Idaho RINO Senators, who have been bedrock supporters of McConnell no matter what he did. The fake-conservative, hardcore RINO political culture in Boise is as difficult to overcome, as any safe-Democrat district/city/state. When Governor Little was almost a duplicate of nearby Washington State and Oregon Marxist Governors, acting by executive fiat in sync with nearly everything they did in COVID 2020, I realized while Idaho may be “solid-red” Republican, the Boise politicians are all GOP-e RINO’s. There is NO, zip-zero-nadda reason NOT to have 15 viable primary challengers to both of these Senators, they are just that vulnerable on their records. I guess the only thing that’s needed is lots of cash. (Utah-Mormon cash keeps these guys afloat, or so I’ve heard.) Same thing applies to both so-called “GOP” Congressmen. Mine is in the Freedom Caucus, though he’s never seen leading anything “conservative”. Unfortunately, about 75% of the “Freedom Caucus” House members are just posers, there for the press at election time, but never there when leadership or votes are needed.

Also, you can get Moo-cow-ski into lock step in the blink of an eye by passing law prohibiting “ rank choice” or other novel election practices for any elected positions who perform duties at a federal level.
I know we want less government intervention & not impede on states rights but if an elected official will have direct impact on federal government decisions then their elections should be standardized to directly reflect the will of the voters up or down. Rank choice voting does not do that it is an algorithmic accommodation. Otherwise Congress would vote on legislation by ranked choice also. They can keep it for their other non-federal functioning elections if they so choose.
This fits under the guise of election integrity standardization.
