By now I am assuming many people on the West and Southwest coast of Florida are either evacuated or staying put. With approximately 12 hours before deteriorating conditions arrive, I have been asked for some last-minute advice. [Full Prep Here]
Here’s the key part. Do not allow your mind to listen to the dark imaginings that create fear, stress and panic. Stay busy, do stuff, you will find that taking an action-oriented approach will calm your mind. Don’t just sit around and think about dark thoughts.
Yes, it is still possible to do some preparations – here is a quick recap of what you can look at in the final 12 hours of you are planning to hunker down. Keep occupied.
♦ Change the voicemail message on your cell phone to let people know your plans. EXAMPLE: “Hey, you’ve reached Sam, I’m ok and currently preparing for Hurricane Milton. Leave me a message and I’ll get back to you when possible.” ….. After the storm, in an effort to reassure family, and in a method to preserve battery life on your phone, change the message again. “Hey, you’ve reached Sam, I AM OKAY after the hurricane, and I am safe. If you leave a message, my reply may be delayed.” This is one simple way to communicate to your friends and family, so they know you are okay.
Communication is important. Select a single point of contact for communication from you that all others can then contact for updates if needed. You can see the importance of this communication plan, from the recent results of the emergency in Western North Carolina. Tell your family who your primary contact person is, then tell that contact person your exact plans. That contact person then becomes the information hub for you that relays information to your family and friends.
♦ Clean up your documents. Organize your important papers, insurance forms, personal papers etc., and place them in ziploc bags, in a safe place. Some have suggested the dishwasher as a waterproof storage place.
♦ Secure your garage door. You can always tell those people who have been through direct hurricane impacts by how they parked their cars. I now include this information in all hurricane prep because it makes such a difference. If you lose your Florida garage door you will more than likely lose your roof. That’s just the reality of having a massive opening in your structure to 100 – 150 mph winds that could lift the trusses.
If you have two vehicles, put one vehicle inside the garage with the front bumper against the door to help stop the flex (do this carefully). Put the other vehicle outside blocking the garage door facing down the driveway or facing parallel to the garage. The goal is to use the aero dynamics of the car to push the wind away from the door and provide protection.
A cheap car cover can be used to protect the outside vehicle and/or use old blankets (cable ties, bungee cords) to stop the outside vehicle from getting sandblasted and destroyed. Place double folded corrugated cardboard in front of the radiator to protect it from storm debris.
You might still have time for this one. If you live in a flood zone, or if you are concerned about storm surge, take your #1 car to the nearest airport or hotel with a parking garage and park in the upper levels. Take an cab/uber back home if you don’t have a friend or partner to help you. This way you know you will have one workable vehicle, just in case.
♦ Wash and sanitize the bathtub. Then fill the bathtub with water. AND/Or put three 30-gallon trash cans in the shower and fill them with water before the storm. This will give you 90 gallons of water for cooking and personal hygiene. You will also need water to manually flush your toilets. Bottled water is great for drinking, hydrating and toothbrushing, but you will need much more potable water if the municipal supply is compromised or broken. Use a bucket to flush your toilets with water from the tub, trash cans or pool.
♦ Bring in your patio furniture or throw it in the swimming pool. Put a heavy dose of chlorine in the pool now to compensate for the filter pump not working if the power goes out. Run the pump until the power goes out. Swimming pools can quickly turn into algae ponds following a hurricane.
♦ Remember, a standard 6,500-to-8,500-watt generator will run for approximately 8 hours on five gallons of gasoline. If the power goes out, do not run it all the time. Relax until it is safe to go outside and turn it on. Turn it on, chill the fridge, make coffee, use the microwave or charge stuff, then turn it off. Do this in 4-hour shifts and the fridge will be ok and your gasoline will last longer. Gasoline is a scarce and rare commodity in the aftermath of a hurricane. Gas stations don’t work without power. Check the oil in the generator every few days. Also, have a can of quick start or butane available in case the generator starts acting up.
♦ Do all of your laundry before the hurricane hits. You will likely not have the ability again for a few weeks. Your clothes washing machine is also a solid place to put ice where you don’t have to worry about melt.
♦ Cook meals in advance of the hurricane. Store in fridge so you can microwave for a meal. Eating a constant diet of sandwiches gets old after the first week. If you have a generator, you can use the microwave and coffee pot.
♦ Turn down the temp on your freezer now. Fill all empty space in your freezer or deep freeze with bottles of water. [You can also use some versions of Ziploc bags] Make sure you remove some water before positioning to allow room for ice expansion. Use small bottles of water to fill small spaces. You can drink this water post storm but use it to fill space and help your freezer maintain temp during any power outage.
♦ You can also place a tall glass filled with water in the middle shelf of the Freezer. Let the water freeze. Before evacuating place a coin on top of the ice. If the coin is at the bottom of the glass when you return, throw out everything inside the fridge. That means the temp was compromised too long. Generally speaking, if you do not open the freezer door you have about 12 hrs safe food storage before you need to carefully evaluate.
♦ Check your radios and battery-operated devices to make sure they work. Preset your broadcast channel to the one you feel most comfortable with.
It is very important to remain calm and stable. This helps those around you as well as animals. An approaching Hurricane is stressful, but it will be okay. Do not allow your thoughts to turn toward fear and worry. Instead, focus on proactive action that empowers you to prepare.
Say prayers for peace of mind and reassurance. You are NOT alone:
Heavenly Father, please grant me peace of mind and help calm my nerves. Our worldly worries are like a turbulent sea; and we need a very blessed balance that only You can provide. We reach out to You for stability.
Dearest Lord, help me if I stumble and begin to worry. Give me the strength and clarity of mind to remain purposefully calm for my family. Keep my mind, spirit, words and deeds upon a clear path toward You. We trust Your Love God and know that You will provide calm amid this stress.
Just as Your sun rises each day against the darkest of nights; bring us clarity with Your light and grace.
In Your most merciful name, I pray. ~ Amen.
Everything will be okay.

Sage advice. Prayers.
Amen, amen.
Sundance, Thank you for being a beacon of Light.
Thank you for so much help on this website … for instructions, and most of all, your prayers.
You have no idea how far-reaching they go – but the Lord does.
And He will reward you.
The words in your prayer are comforting, and needed …
”Dearest Lord, help me if I stumble and begin to worry. Give me the strength and clarity of mind to remain purposefully calm for my family…”
I’m blessed with three family members who remain calm in times of stressful situations.
One being my 27 y/o grandson, in Fl, awaiting the storm.
I just spoke with him, hoping to encourage.
But he ended up encouraging me!
For those who know Christ, we need to show the world that we truly believe and trust Him …
Somebody has to remain steady to help those who falter!
And, your ending picture is so peaceful.
“Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him…” — Job 13:15
Words are hidden in my heart, John!
TY…
I just spoke with him, hoping to encourage.
But he ended up encouraging me!
Me too 😉
🙏🏻💕
THANK YOU, SD, for the info, esp. preparations.
I do not have use it, but I do forward it to people I know that can.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-23 KJV
Rejoice evermore.
[17] Pray without ceasing.
[18] In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
[19] Quench not the Spirit.
[20] Despise not prophesyings.
[21] Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
[22] Abstain from all appearance of evil.
[23] And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
#17 – Not in its current path but let’s all Pray without Ceasing for those that are. Pray for God’s miracles and though I live in Alabama, I found this article most helpful for many situations – Thank You, Sundance. I will share it far and wide. And pray for the best ways those of us not affected can help those that are. Discernment for best use of resources – health, strength, talents, money – to share with those in need for quite some time. Lord We The People pray for Your Grace and Forgiveness of Sins.
God bless you all.
“Stay busy, do stuff, you will find that taking an action-oriented approach will calm your mind.”
This is sage advise for more than just this situation.
Very latest: 2AM Thursday landfall at Tampa, Cat 4, 130 MPH winds.
That is the best idea I’ve ever heard Sundance! Leaving VM messages without having contact. Brilliant!!!!
When we all stop learning it usually means we’ve departed this life.
Live coverage from a Tampa TV station:
Who is evacuating in an EV?
Chime in, I would like to hear how it’s going.
Just heard from some county emergency prep spokesman which I will summarize: don’t park your EV in any flood area building you don’t want to burn down as (electrically conductive) saltwater can create a cascading battery short. He says they had no such issues with Helene.
DeSantis is covering the INCREDIBLE, impressive prep efforts right now. WOW!
31k in state shelters local to them, 170k spots still available.
List any businesses offering the usual donate a dollar or round off to the nearest dollar hurricane relief donations. I was at a Jersey Mike’s sub place the other day and they had the round to the nearest dollar thing for Helene relief.
As anticipated, tornadoes already hitting south Florida.
I went to one business that was asking for a Red Cross donation for Helene. Red Cross and United Way are two examples that I don’t like donating to.
Jersey Mike’s I went to made no mention of the Red Cross. Officially they say they are: “collaborating with nonprofit groups in the affected states to distribute food in communities where it’s needed the most. Items include pantry staples such as beans, rice, canned vegetables, broth and spices that will enable families to cook nutritious meals, the company said.”
Red Cross CEO makes quite the paycheck. Salvation Army is more closely related to reality by a long shot. Red Cross gets my blood donation and Salvation Army gets my dough!
Godspeed @sundance and everyone who will or have been affected by the two hurricanes.
And Ian, which wasn’t that long ago. Ian stayed stuck, hopefully Milton will speed on away.
Agreed
I do hope that everyone who hasn’t evacuated has properly prepared or will by night fall.
One thing to remember is something i learned in another capacity but applies in many instances is
If your plan for when you ate attacked is to circle the wagons and wait for the Cavalry to show up, the savages are going to whip you a$#
You have to be able to protect yourself
Thanks Sundance. We are riding it out here in St Augustine. Our first real hurricane! Be safe everyone!
Retired Magistrate here: I have a cousin who lives in Clearwater, not on the beach. He is disabled and has no place to go. His condo is an older one and very well built; he lives on the third floor.
He has lived in Florida for 25 years and has stayed put for all the hurricanes; he will ride this one out also. Just talked to him. He sounds exhausted and said “Marcia, where am I going to go.” I told him that I love him and he said “ditto” back. He is 79 years old and like a big brother to me.
respectfully, send him this post. He may be able to perform a number of the tasks SD has suggested.
Retired Magistrate here: He does not have internet or a cell phone; just a land line. He is probably prepared as best as he can be.
God keep you both
This is such a wonderful group of people – networks? How do you develop and use them? I have always been a keep to myself and work hard person, but at the ripe old age of 70, I am reaching out to neighbors. Can anyone reach out to cousin in Clearwater. Can we use the evil internet for good?
The internet is neither evil nor good.
It is a neutral tool which can be used by humans for evil or good purposes.
Sundance uses it for good.
The WEF, well, not so much…
Praying for all those in the hurricane’s path.
May the Lord keep you safe and be glorified in His mercy.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
So true, Val. It all depends on whose hands the tools are in! Thanks for clarifying my absolute. I think this of nuclear energy and Artificial Intelligence – can be used for such good. Depends on whose hands are using it. We are all grateful for Sundance’s overcoming any obstacles to use the internet for good. And for all the good neighbors across our Land that respond.
Praying for you both!
Praying much for him, Marcia…and for you as you are filled with worry as you have so much to worry about…Keep us posted?
No shelters nearby?
Retired Magistrate here: He had radiation treatment for prostrate cancer and lost total control of his bowels. Through no fault of his own he could ruin a car seat. He has had accidents in doctor’s offices and other places to his total embarrassment. At least where he is the bathroom is close.
His dream was to retire to Florida then he had the radiation treatment which resulted in the bowel problem along with other serious health issues. Even with all this he is happy that he got to fulfill his dream of moving to Florida.
Tarps and trash bags make slippery, though adequate seat covers.
Praying that the Lord’s best will for him be accomplished.
I read that Uber volunteered to pick up & take people to local shelters.
Yes! It was Uber that was giving Free Rides to Shelters.
Marcia, he can call the police and they can get him uber or whatever to get to a shelter.
Please tell him to call or YOU call to the emergency tele numbers and get him HELP.
Praying
I see now the difficulty for his own care if moved physically. Now, that you explained Marcia, he may certainly be at peace staying home. He is not alone as God is with him to comfort him. Wherever we are we are holding on.
Marcia, he can get a (free) ride to a shelter. There was a number to call somewhere for people who need that.
If I come across it again, I’ll post it here. But it should be listed on some FL State sites.
❤️
You are an instrument of The Lord. Thank you, dear friend, for all you do.
Blessings to All!
👊👊🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸
Praying for everyone!
If you have a thermos or two, fill with hot coffee, cocoa, soup while you have power. And if/when you lose power, every time you fire up the generator or camp stove, make extra and refill the thermos.
Don’t have a generator myself, so excuse my ignorance, but can a generator be used to charge vehicle batteries, which can then be used to run devices?
Might that require something called an inverter?
If a person has advance notice of a storm, perhaps they can acquire the needed equipment and extra vehicle batteries to charge, and then not need to use the generator as often?
Again, ignorant in this area.
We have a portable Honda. Older, pretty small model. Runs on gas, has several outlets that we run extension cords to for powering devices. Haven’t used it for computer or tv, used it for refrigerator and freezer when we had an outage that lasted a few days. It’s usually used to power a small trailer camper. Have also plugged a battery charger into it to recharge the batteries for both the camper and an electric scooter.
There are newer ones with an inverter built in and that’s supposed to prevent power surges that could fry electronics. We’ve been talking about upgrading or going to a whole house. standby one. Those are the type that kick in automatically when you lose power to your home. For that type you need a transfer panel installed and can either hook it up to natural gas or install a large propane tank. We’re looking at Generac brand if we do that.
Excellent advice. You’re a good man. I appreciate you
Tip, in case you don’t know this one. Might be a little late to implement this time, but good tip.
In order to hook a small non-whole house generator to you electrical panel so you can run selected 110v circuits, wire a dryer type plug into the gen cable. Before cranking up generator, cut off all circuit breakers. Crank the connected generator. Flip the breaker to the dryer on. This not effectively becomes the Main Breaker, as it controls all electricity to the distribution panel. Then just flip the 110 breakers you need to run.
With my 5500 gen, I can run all my 110v including well pump, just keep lights, to minimum.
Sounds interesting, but I would ask my local electrical utility if it is a possible danger to their linemen.
No point in asking, they will tell you to have a licensed electrician install according to code.
Hope to heaven you open the main breaker at the service entrance (typically near the meter) before you power that panel. Of course your method assumes electric/220v dryer.
That’s called a suicide cord setup, and for good reason. You end up with two male plug ends. If the gen is running with the cable plugged into it and you touch the other end of the cord, you’re likely dead. Or your wife or kid or neighbor.
This is not something anyone should try without research, a mentor, etc. And certainly not during high stakes weather conditions.
And NEVER attempt this if you are standing in water or the rain!!
This is one of those DIY things that is more likely to kill you than most others if you make a single mistake or anyone else touches any part of it.
For reference, I’ve done it. I’ve done electrical DIY for decades. I can wire an HVAC system. I have an electrical engineering degree. But I would not do this the first time without a mentor with direct experience watching and advising me.
Treason Alert: The Biden Harris Admin Have Been in Control of Hurricanes Helene and Milton Using Pentagon Weather Weapons (infowars.com)
Years ago, I was on I-80 west of Davenport, going west…and saw in the sky…a perfect ‘tic tac toe board’ of chemtrails and wondered about that…to this day, I wonder…
US Government has been involved in weather modification since 1946, Operation Cirrus.
US is also a signatory to the 1976 UN Weather Modification Treaty.
I recently read that there are 52 nations currently involved in weather modification.
There is NOTHING organic about what’s happening here in Florida! Everything about this is being called “unprecedented.” How many coincidences before it becomes unbelievable?
The Infowars program today is supposed to be greatly devoted at the weather weaponry happening. I am just hearing it now. But yesterday was filled with info and Greg Reese a reporter there has done a clip w/info.
DANE WIGINGTON of geoengineeringwatch.org as we were told yesterday, is indeed being interviewed today on Alex Jones program. I’ve heard the man speak for years. He’s expert and a pro.
If anyone has the least bit of doubt remaining that we are under a full assault orchestrated by factions of the rogue globalist usurpers through weather warfare.I urge you to give this a listen. Supporters of President Trump are the primary targets. Don’t worry though. They’ll eat their own, if ever they are successful against us.
I urge anyone that is able. To listen to this program.
To any and all who might be in harm’s way. I fervently pray for your deliverance from this evil. Godspeed.
Yes, they are steering it right over SOCOM and CENTCOM HQs.
I pay most everything online. I went online this morning and scheduled a couple bills due at the end of this week so they will be paid on or before their due date. I anticipate not having power after tonight. I am also washing laundry and cooking this morning.
Godspeed…
Only matter of time our government stops pretending and names a Hurricane Fema.
^^ I bet your right!
The LAX shooting IN 2013 *supposedly* perpetrated by a disgruntled TSA screener there. His name!?
PAUL CIANCIA. Really.
Can’t make this sh*t up. But they sure love to rub our noses in it.
Generator information for future storm plans. There is a BPTM – Back up Power Meter transfer device that maybe available via your utility company. Call them and see. I know PG&E out of California will allow this device and I believe they do the installation as well. It allow for your generator to hook up and safety protects the lineman working on down lines. Depending on the size of your generator you determine the load of appliances and turn off some breakers as necessary. A second procedure is Reliance sells a through the wall unit that is easy to install and you can run up several appliances depending on the size of generator. I use this although I am looking into the BPTM now. These two devices are on Amazon, Grainger, big box lumber stores as well.
I have a sub-panel for my main breaker that wires into a few circuits. The sub has toggle switches on it that will either allow the circuit to be powered from the main or from a generator. I can plug into the sub-panel my 220v generator or my 220v power inverter that I have connect to 2 large LiPo batteries and the batteries are charged with solar power.
When using the sub-panel it is cut off from the grid and so there is no feed back to the lineman.
So what happens with all these houses and their rooftop solar systems?
What a beautiful, thoughtful and caring mind.💞
✝️God Bless you and yours, Sundance.
.-thanks😎
Harbor Freight has generators at a good prices.
Some have remote control, so you can start it from inside the house/truck/RV:

I have been through many hurricanes since 1964, and I still printed every one of your hurricane Milton articles. Not only do they contain sage and life-saving advice, they contain information that may never have occurred to every Floridian and beyond, and/or that people will forget in times of stress, (including me). We all wish you and everyone in Milton’s path well, and thank you for taking the time to care!
(p.s. please give Suspicious Cat a hug from me) 😉
Use water from the ditch outside to flush toilets; not your potable water supply!!!
Make sure you sift out the snakes and frogs first.
And grass and mud.
Who needs a backed up toilet right after a hurricane?
And lizards.
Lots of teeny tiny baby frogs and lizards around right now.
They are So. Cute. !!!
We have both a chemical camping toilet and a portable commode like those used in hospitals and nursing facilities. There are small drawstring plastic bags available to use as liners for that. No water necessary! That was under $25, plus cost of liners. The chem toilet was around $160 (20 years ago) plus cost of chemical and dissolving tp. Add in the fee for using a dumping station too.
Was just on the east coast Jetty Cam at Fort Pierce…people out and about for a morning stroll…
Here is an aggregate of weather cams on the west coast…while I am safe, my anxiety for those in danger is high…and feel helpless for now…

The antidote to anxiety is prayer.
And don’t forget the thanksgiving to the merciful, sovereign God Who is able to bring blessings out of any situation, if we allow Him.
Excellent Link , Aggiegirl !
Thank You So Much 💘
I’m Far Away in South West Washington State but Close to Y’all in Prayer and Spirit 🙏
Florida Strong 💪
God,
bless our lineman and crews who will be working around the clock to restore our power.
Prayers up for you too, Sundance. Please take care of yourself, we need you.
Amen.
Take it from someone who has experienced way too many hurricanes….anything over a Category 2, get the h*ll out.
“I-Eeee”, bro,…. now go paddle your pirogue (canoe) up the bayou .
(Where Ya At and how ya been, Mon Ami?)
Huge amounts of debris collected after Helene but not yet removed is going to add to the wind and storm surge damage.
Post Hurricane Camille (a Cat 5 with 26.5 mercury pressure/892mb with over 200 mph winds and a 25′ + storm surge that hit the MS Gulf Coast at Pass Christian/Bay Saint Louis on 8/17/’69)…. 750,000 tons of debris were collected and removed in MS, LA and AL, per the records and reports from NOAA/Aoml.
It took many months for this effort to be competed and more than 10 – 15 years for the MS Gulf Coast to recover/rebuild, if not longer.
Along the 27 mile long MS Gulf Coast beach and for several blocks inland to the raised rail road tracks, Camille’s storm surge left mainly clean concrete slabs where homes and commercial buildings once stood.
How do I know? I, my father and family lived through it and its ‘otherworldly’ aftermath.
Dad, a former Naval Officer/Ship’s XO kept a log on a yellow legal pad that horrible, but very exciting night, of the Storm as it approached/hit and passed,…. recording barometric pressure readings, wind speed estimates, storm surge rise, property damages, etc,.
Across the way on the other side of Lake Yazoo in front of our home, a 600′ Naval ship was listing to starboard at about30 degrees at Ingalls Shipyard as no one had paid out slack on it’s mooring lines to the dock as the water level rose.
My father was afraid the ship would break free, be blown across Ingall’s shipyard and Lake Yazoo and hit our house. It did break free later that night but it was driven up the Pascagoula River and took out the L&N Rail Road train bridge, were it became lodged.
While checking on Dad’s 38′ John Alden designed sloop sailboat that was moored in the middle of the lake in front of our house with 12 anchor lines with lots of slack,… a big wind gust blew a large oak tree branch into Dad who was leaning into the strong wind several feet in front of me.
It blew him into me knocking us both to the ground in our wet/slippery yellow rain slickers. Very wet but not hurt, we rose and he told me the wind was constant at appx 80 mph as we both leaned into it with our big flashlights trying to see his boat ( the MIMI survived unscathed, but about 40 other boats were destroyed as they broke their moorings and blew down lake Yazoo, thankfully missing our beautiful sail boat).
So, at 19, I asked how he knew the wind speed and he told me that he had endured greater winds on board his naval ship, the USS Salinas, while crossing the North Atlantic in storms in WWII.
It was a night I will never forget.
We lost electric power around 7 – 8 pm and used our old hurricane glass lanterns filled with oil to light the interior of our home.
Our front gallery french floor to ceiling windows had their shutters closed/locked and our large French glass panned front doors were braced with wooden bars from the inside.
The grand old house had survived every storm for over 169 years, so we fett confident that we would ride it out ok,…. until Dad saw his mercury barometer falling rapidly which meant a Very Big Storm approaching and very big Trouble,… but he did not alarm us at the time. The old house had been used as a convelesence hospital for soldier during the Civil War,… but NO,…although I lived there many years with my grandfather and then my father’s family,… I have never seen a ghost there, though others claim that they have seen them.
Our well built heart pine/cypress wood two story house established in 1850 was on the water at an elevation of 25′ in Pascagoula, MS, 40 miles East of the eye at landfall.
Camille’s surge reached the lower brick steps on the front gallery of our home, appz 22′ surge.
The walls on both ends of the house on the second floor were moving in and out, breathing, as the 100 mph + Howling and Roaring hurricane winds/gusts wracked the structure.
The 60′ long, 10′ high wooden grape arbor attached to the back gallery and over the back roadway collapsed to the ground at about 11:30 PM and a massive Pecan tree near it at the rear road entrance was blown down just after the arbor fell.
FL will rebuild after both Helene and Milton as we did after Camille and Katrina,… it’s in our nature to survived and thrive as Independent minded Americans.
Best of luck to all those in Milton’s path and Wrath tonight. Prepare, then Pray, as SD says.
My Uncles, Aunts, Cousins SURVIVED Camille at the Church Building in Ocean Springs.
Two Uncles worked at Ingalls and After the Storm Struck, The Third Uncle was Deputized and Worked the Biloxi Disaster Area.
Heroing Stories
Then you must know from personal family accounts just how unprecedented the damage from Camille truly was.
A couple days after the storm, President Nixon flew over the coast to inspect the wreckage. He said an Army General on board the hilo with him said the MS Gulf Coast beach looked like Iwo Jima after that Pacific battle in WWII.
Today, Ocean Springs is a small but very beautiful city.
My folks moved down to NOLA in 74. Earlier my Mother’s Mom had spent several months in Waveland in the 50’s and my Mom knew the area. Even in 74 the amount of remaining Camille damage was huge. I remember seeings steps leading up from US90 going nowhere — the stately old homes had been removed.
And many of the residents who stayed there during Camille were removed form this Earth, as well.
Some of them were my acquaintances from New Orleans living in their MS vacay dachas.
Pete Fountain had one there but only recently died there of old age,… what a great guy/musician. My next door neighbor in Metairie was his Trumpet player, Mr. Alessie.
Today, Bay Saint Louis/Waveland is a very lovely, safe, scenic and fun laid back town, not city, with a small population that many now want to relocate to during Bidenhorrors.
To continue my Camille narrative to the end:
Early the next morning, after Camille had left the Coast and headed inland where she eventually dumped too much rain on the Appalachian Mountains in VA, like Helene has now,…before heading out to the Atlantic, it was a beautiful sunny day with cool clear air with low humidity from the North.
I got up, drank the last of the coffee from the night before and then swam about 60 yards over a falling High tide out to the our sloop, the MIMI, that was still anchored and unharmed in the middle of Lake Yazoo.
I climbed aboard her up the anchor lines, checked her damages, found none of significance and then started her Atomic Four gas engine. Then I turned on her marine radio to see if the world was still alive and shaking.
I first picked up radio transmission traffic from a pilot in a small plane flying over South Plaquemines Parish to the South of NOLA,… about 70 miles South West of the MIMI, near Port Sulfur, LA. So lucky my mother had called.
I was shocked as he reported that nothing was visible on the ground there but the Gulf of Mexico!
He said that water covered everything from the Breton Sound East of the river, across both the East and West Mississippi River levees and out to Barataria Bay to the West of Port Sulfur and down to the Mouth of the river. Total inudation, the Mississippi delta was then a part of the Gulf of Mexico.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
Just two days prior, my mother had called me at my uncle’s home in the NOLA Garden District to say, “Don’t go with Ben,… your Dad wants you home NOW,… a hurricane is heading our way and he needs you here to help prepare.”
I was just about to leave to go to my Tulane freshman roommates’ old family home in Port Sulfur, LA,… a big beautiful place with orange groves and gas well$$$.
His grandfather was the Parish MD who had graduated Tulane Med Sch with my uncle that I was living with in NOLA then. We had panned to go fishing there, which was a great place for it and duck hunting as well.
After hearing this pilot’s live report did I then fully realize what this Monster hurricane, Camille, had done to our Beautiful Gulf Coast and the Sportsman’s Paradise of South East Louisiana,… and how fortunate Mom had called me home.
Thankfully, New Orleans was spared, receiving only a glancing blow with gusts up to 60 mph and only minor flooding in the Ninth Ward and areas to the East of the old city.
FL will rebuild again after both Helene and Milton,… it’s in our nature to survived and thrive as resourceful, determined Americans.
Long before FEMA and for a couple of hundred years, Gulf of Mexico Coastal Counties and Communities have rallied to rescue their hurricane survivor neighbors and assist in the rebuilding of their world.
This will occur again soon in FL. Best of luck, again to all in FL tonight.
Reminder: You also have drinkable water in your hot water heater. 40+ gallons, depending on its capacity
As noted elsewhere, make sure water heater is off so when does come back on its not heating an empty tank which tank probably doesn’t like.
Near by swimming pools, if available, also provide endless gallons of toilet flushing water.
I’m lying here being prepped for a medical procedure and while I’m waiting, I send all my prayers for the souls in the path of the storm.
May God protect you all. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
May all be well for you as well.
God bless you, and God bless and guide those tending to your needs now.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayers for you as well Gunner!
Thank you Sundance. I am riding it out in South Venice with Chester and a more senior neighbor and her cat at her house.
Breaker off (and I just spent $3 K underground in my power 4 months ago).
I wished I had read this post 24 hrs ago!
Prayers for your safety from Slidell, LA.
I feel better and I am not in Florida. Thank you Sundance. Praying for all.
It sped up. Latest track has landfall at 11:00-11:30, not 2 AM.
Not for voyeurism, but for getting an idea of things as they progress…..for as long as they stay online, Earth Cam (and others im sure), can provide perspective on the situation from various positions. There are a couple Tampa based cams, plus others. I’m sure common vacation spots have web cams.

Godspeed !!!
Thanks for the prayer, Sundance. It’s just what I need right now!
Alert Alert…
Pay close attention to these updates
now LiveStreaming, and pass on:
Extensive tornado activity ahead of Milton. It’s popping off.
Found in the bin… 🙁
As to comms after Milton leaves FL for people to locate their family/friends/employees,…. shortly after Katrina in Louisiana, a web site named 504 was set up to allow searchers to locate one another by posting messages as to status and whereabouts.
504 is the telephone area code for New Orleans, LA.
It was a Tremendous asset that worked great and alleviated a lot of stress and anxiety for both the survivors of Katrina and people away from the storm.
Perhaps our host, SD can pass this idea on to Gov DeSantis’ team,…. it is easy to set up and alert the public about. It works great!
In Louisiana, it worked for many months to help reunite missing and worried people in Louisiana and all across the Nation.
10 active, large tornado warning areas in central and south FL right now.
One other cool thing I did not know: If you have an iphone, you can send SMS messages via satcom if the grid goes down: https://support.apple.com/en-us/120930
That capability will be of use to ya’ll in Florida.
Indeed. Good advice to bring up for iPhone users. UPGRADE ASAP TO IOS18.
Note: You will not see satellite options UNTIL no regular cell service, FYI.
Best explanation:
i 14 and later, though.
Mine’s an 8Plus😂 Linking to satellite might be worth upgrading….
Dangerous life threatening Tornadoes breaking out across Florida. Please pay attention.
Ryan Hall Y’all just commented that this was the most pre-landfall hurricanes he’s ever seen. Wow. 😮
have a can of quick start or butane available in case the generator starts acting up
If you are not a gear head or don’t already know this you do this with lil tiny squirts!
Hopefully you keep the spark plug wrench with the genny and if you flood it (won’t start & smells of gasoline) pull the plug and crank it over to clear excess gasoline THEN walk away for a a while and let it clear the air! (do not ask how I know this)
Little 2 stroke generators can be had for very little. About 750 watt. If not treated properly they can be a PITA but they will run a fridge and lighting and a TV. I have two of them.
Best to use white gas, non ethanol gas in those small engines. If the gas in the tank is old, and it wont start, clean the fuel line with WD 40 and she should start right up, unless the carb is gummed up with old gas residue. Clean it out with new gasoline as well.
This worked for me last moth during H. Francine.
Maybe my memory is faulty, but it seems one part of Florida or another, if not the whole, is destroyed every couple years nowadays. The whole nation dragged into convulsions and trauma over local weather. Maybe the events are being magnified by the media more than in the past?
I would think if a person chose to live there, they would expect and prepare for these frequent events as a matter of routine. Are there actually people getting wiped out over and over and over, yet another ultimately predictable hurricane is a problem for them … “news”? They keep coming back for more the next year? They don’t learn?
Excellent advice. As someone who survived Andrew and then later the three back-to-back-back storms in 2004, these are the tips I have also learned over time. Thank you for sharing them.
SIL in North Ft. Myers has lost power already. 6:15 pm
