As a teacher in NE Oregon I saw far too many students enter school who spoke barely a word of English. What was worse is that so many of them had parents who were technically DACA.
What really maddened me was that the school system had special classes for them They got forty-five minutes to sixty minutes of special ESL classes daily Each class had about 6 to 8 students with a bi-lingual teacher and 3 to 4 bi-lingual paras/aides.
Regular classes if lucky got a para for maybe hour a day to help with some of the classes.
Which is exactly why the US Dept of Ed (not education) is worthless and always has been!

The bad news is that with my email and phone now working I just got a message from my sister, she and her family live near Ashville and they are still without power. They have a generator, but running out of fuel, only running it for short periods to conserve.
May have to go on a two hour rescue mission and hope the roads are open.

The roads on I-26 are open up to Asheville. No fuel is available so fill up prior to NC. I understand that Spartanburg has some fuel but large lines and wait. A few stations in Saluda and Hendersonville are expecting fuel tomorrow but those with generators to power the pumps are limiting amounts and ALL digital Credit cards will not work. Prepay with cash is your only option. Shelby on 74 may have fuel. 74 to I-26 is open.

I have an 88-year-old friend who lives in the town of Swannanoa which is about five miles east of Asheville, between US 70 and I-40. He said he could see floodwaters about 1/4 mile away but he and his house are fine, albeit lacking water and electricity.

After the hurricane had hit Florida, I was checking on its progress and the track. Forecasters expected it to turn northwest from north Georgia. It didn’t. It was heading due north directly toward western SC, and the NC mountains/foothills…the region of my birth through my early 30’s. I KNEW this would be a huge disaster and warned relatives, but I had no idea it would be this immense. Prayers for all, and pleas for everyone to donate funds that will be needed.
The NC Governor, his administration, was NOT PREPARED for even a nominal Federal government is asleep just like its puppets.

Earlier today in the regular thread, I made the comment about flood plains. About 3:16 pm if you want read it. This comment is also about the floods and ok to put here I guess.
We have seen the videos of vast farms and crops flooded (in the flood plain). This is indeed bad and a great loss to those farmers. However, the silver lining is the same that many ancient cultures used and were aware of. Nutrient rich soils result from floods. Now, if those flood waters were straight from mountains and hopefully little to none thru industry, then the resulting soil will become naturally nutrient rich. Ancient Egyptians a prime example. Their seasons were, flood, plant, harvest, flood, plant harvest, again. Every year for thousands of years.
These farmers till that new soil in and it will be like gold.
Are you going to live and Farm in these floodplain landslide areas? Many locals who tried have had mudslides wash into the Pacolet river. This is an event that has happened twice in 3 years. As you drive up I-26 to Asheville and go up the road from Tryon/Columbus NC you are riding on the edge of the slide zone within 50 ft of road. You may want to exceed speed near the top of the Saluda grade to get past the zone. The active slide zone has been noted on geologic records before the road was built. They have spent all summer trying to reinforce the road in the active slide area.
Assuming that they are financially solvent enough to continue farming or that FEMA low interest loans are available to get them through this year. It looks to me like that the crops in much of that area are lost.
No doubt some hostile foreign country or one of the “Big Three” BR, Van and SS will buy their farms for pennies on the dollar.

First, you’ve got to prepare “accommodations for 10,000 victims.” Using only(!) what you have. Perhaps with no way to reach(!) resources that might be just a few miles away. This storm dumped multiple feet of water in a 24-hour period in some places.
I hope Trump already has a plan to send help and maybe show up himself. It’s a difficult logistics problem but right in his wheelhouse.

My granddaughter lives in Franklin with her mom. My son lives in Sylva. They’ve been with us in Middle Tennessee since Thursday afternoon, my son is planning on heading back tomorrow……I am silently freaking out. I do not believe it is a safe situation. My granddaughter spoke to her other grandmother today. The grocery stores are running low and accepting cash only as well as gas stations. I hope you hear something soon. I understand Clayton, GA has internet service but Franklin and all points north do not. My son will have to drive to Atlanta and head north up through Gainesville to get back.

Perhaps you are being just a little bit too hard on this guy. The National Guard helicopters should have been in the air on day one reconnoitering the situation, setting up communications, logistics, medical stations and emergency medical evacuations. This is all on the governor.

The governor had plenty of forehand notice to have in place the resources necessary to get the job done. There is no excuse for reconnaissance to not have been underway as soon as the storm was over. That recon would have gathered the intel necessary to proceed with on scene resources.
Our power workers convoy departed on THURSDAY for the 4.5 hour trip to the storm zone. Organizing began at least on Wednesday; 2 days before the storm made landfall. We are a smaller, rural county and yet look at the difference in response from real people compared to those who are SUPPOSED to lead.
I heard him on the radio and thought it sounded strange. I didn’t consider he was reading a teleprompter.

The actual problem isn’t “FEMA dispatch.” The problem is successfully getting out of Greenville, and into the areas where the ambulances are needed. When there are no longer any navigable roads.
Help is getting in. I-26 is open in Asheville. There is no excuse for this.

My Pastor has two college students in Black Mountain North Carolina, and they were just visiting a place called Chimney Rock NC on vacation. The two PKs are stranded on the campus which is luckily on high ground, and the town the Pastor was visiting was totally wiped out, they had find a mountain pass to escape. Unbelievable devastation.
