I know some good people on our side trapped up on the mountain in Asheville. Took them until this morning to finally air drop water to a clearing in the neighborhood. Unreal
I haven’t seen photos, but the mountain between Ashville and Hendersonville is probably inaccessible. 1 road going up /down 2 lanes each way, was a bitch due to many switchbacks during the winter when they iced up, fun during the fall driving my Porsche 944 Turbo in late 1980’s. Spoke w/a friend that lives in Boone after seeing the giant mudslides and flooding on the mountains there in western NC. He luckily was in Colorado with wife moving daughter, his neighbors said the house appeared okay, but there might not be a road there again. GOD bless and help these survivors. I lost my home and business in Everglades City, Fla due to hurricane Irma in 09/2017, 7 years ago this month. It sucks when you are stranded in the middle of nowhere and you have nothing to communicate with or survive.

Most farmers have picked sweet apples. Granny Smith will be lost unless they can pickup the fallen Apples. Labor will be a problem. Pumpkins are lost and remaining summer vegis are lost from too much rain. We received 24.13 inches from Sept 25-the 29th. No power crews, plenty of helicopters flying over and locals and Canadian crews are doing a great job in getting BIG trees off of one lane of major roads and many secondary roads.
I relocated for job back in 1988 in October. Loved going up in the mountain to get fresh, 100% pure sweet apple juice, and a variety that was a small apple but the sweetest and tart, stored well in refrigerator for weeks. Found out that the apples for selling whole had to be hand picked or shaken w/o hitting the ground 9nets strung under the tree limbs to catch them when shaken) due to bruising. I hope and pray they can salvage some of them. Is sad. I have witnessed /experienced first hand the destruction and post hurricane damage for the last 7 yrs, I still have nightmares, am thankful it blew by me in SE Ala w/just heavy rain and no local damage , but 45+ miles further east in Valdosta heavy flooding.

He’s been lucky for the past almost eight years that we haven’t had more horrible weather here in NC. This is outrageous — there is so much devastation here in the NC mountains. My brother and his wife (in the Hendersonville area–near Asheville), luckily, have been through difficult emergencies before. They have a generator, full gas tanks in their cars, a full pantry of food, batteries for flashlights, are able to wash clothes, and their house is on a hill, so they don’t have the extra water pouring down on them from the surrounding mountains.
They are prepared, but most aren’t. It is incredible, and I can’t believe it has taken this foolish governor this long to respond. I’ve never seen anything like this in NC in the time I’ve lived here — off and on since 1988. Pray for those in the NC mountains. They need help!

The people behind this corruption deserve full scrutiny. The military doesn’t need to hold bake sales but the USA military absolutely must defend our homeland, and prepare to lead in an empathetic but firm mass expulsion.

I moved to waynesville, NC about a month ago from Florida. We’re about thirty minutes away from Asheville who got devastated. We had serious flooding and mud slides that did significant damage. Driving today I saw people emptying their house and putting all the damaged debris by the road. Several roads are still down and today cellular service is kind of back on. I say kind of because if you drive five miles it goes out. There are people lined up on the shoulder of the highway where there is a signal. The past couple days everything has been cash only and there were lines at gas stations. I got lucky and found one in Cherokee that wasn’t out.

I am jumping in here really quick just to say, thank you to Sundance for all posts re Helene. They were information packed, especially for those who had not been through such a storm before, and to all of you who offered to help to perfect strangers, in a time of crisis, reaching out through multiple threads from as far away as Washington state. I moved to Miami the summer of 64, just in time to experience Cleo. Since then I have seen the good in most, and and a few bad, but it warmed my heart to see what went on in these threads in the last multiple days. I have spent the last couple of days making arrangements for my 82 year old aunt in Ohio to be safe and taking care of things for her, she lost both power and water from Helene, (who would have thought that would have occurred)! In these crazy times, thank you.

The lie is this. Both DeSantos and Kemp declared Fl & Ga counties as State of Emergencies PRIOR to Helene’s landfall. This act opens up federal funding. This is Standard Operating Procedure — at least for REP Govs. Don’t lie and say you expedited funding 3 days after the fact. That action alone is willful negligence.

Some of us (moi) have followed the forming of Helene down below the Yucatan gap 8-10 PRIOR to landfall and Mike (Mike’s Weather Page) Gave a minimun of daily briefings or far more briefings after Helene left the Yucatan Gap detailing why it was going to be massive catastrophic flooding for 5 states including NC. Pure BS this Gov didn’t know.

And for several days before landfall I heard many reports that National Hurricane Center believed it would finally STALL over southern Appalachia for 3 days.
Yes, NOAA was on it also. That’s why I believe Gov Cooper should be charged for numerous criminal actions – because this was public knowledge and he did nothing to issue mandatory evacs in certain areas.
