The NTSB gives an update on the Francis Scott Key bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, following the impact of a Singaporean-flagged cargo ship, the Dali.
According to the update, 56 containers of hazardous materials were on board, including corrosive flammable cells, lithium ion batteries, and other hazardous materials. Some of the HAZMAT containers were compromised and some fell into the water. The briefing also gives a preliminary outline as an outcome of an initial review of the voyage data recorder (VDR) for six hours 00:00 to 06:00 on the morning of the impact. Part of the investigation will be determining what caused the ship to lose power before hitting the bridge. The source of that outage remained unknown as of Wednesday, Homendy said.
Homendy said tugboats were called to help the vessel leave the port and get to the main channel. The vessel does not have any tugboats at this time. Homendy confirmed that vessel did not have any tugboats helping it navigate through the waters before it hit the bridge. The VDR showed that the pilot called for tugboats just before 1:30 a.m. after the vessel hit the bridge.
The NTSB has confirmed that there were 21 crewmembers on board the vessel at the time of the accident plus two pilots. (LINK)

The bridge is in kind of an unusual location where Anne Arundel County, Balitmore County, and Baltimore City come together. Looking at a map it looks like most of the bridge is in Baltimore County.

And news reports say river currents played a big part in causing the vessel to veer…. Anybody see a big river dumping into this bay??? Tidal flows , OK, but b.s. on attempts to deflect all the ” coincidences”.
Ignore news reports trying to speculate. The Baltimore harbor is an estuary of the brackish Chesapeake Bay, created in the drainage basin for several streams flowing down from the higher plateau around the city to the north and west, and there are four local watershed drainage rivers/ streams that feed the basin.
Currents at the Key bridge are primarily driven by the tides, although during heavy periods of rain there can be a bit more fresh water pushing the ebb tide current outbound toward the Bay. The Dali was heading towards the bridge in the main channel which is the direction of outbound currents until you get closer to shore where eddys occur. I cannot see “currents” as a rational excuse for the ships radical turn off course.
That is why they are required to have “Pilots” onboard that are familiar with these currents and other possible problems .
That’s correct. What we don’t know is whether the pilots for that particular ship on that particular run were compromised/ bribed/ coerced into letting a remote controller steer the vessel into the bridge pier. A plot like this would require planning by someone who understands the ship systems and where the recorders are and what they record. The criminals would plan to have the covert control untraceable somehow. The pilots would act as if it really was a system failure and make the expected calls and emergency measures to fool the investigators. Or they may be innocent and the criminals were able to do everything remotely – kill the power at critical moments and steer the ship.
It’s possible that the fatal turn was deliberately done while the power was deliberately cut which of courage blanked out the recording from picking up the steering signals. This is conjecture but we all saw the sequence of events in that video. I’m not buying that all those things happened and by chance the ship took out the most important piece of structure to the integrity of the bridge. It’s just too coincidental.
How, exactly, do you move the rudder before emergency generator kicks in and powers the emergency switchboard? I didn’t see “the sequence of events”. I saw a loss of topside lighting, followed by topside lighting returning, then heavy black smoke and then the bow did seem to move to starboard. I dare say there are many more “events” involved.

Experts have said that dropping the port anchor caused the stern of the ship to veer radically off track (relative to the bow) and make it head directly for the bridge. The experts say that if they didn’t drop the anchor the ship probably would have missed the supports.
Foreign flagged ships should be required to have USA safety inspections and meet USA standards, before being allowed to enter or leave a US Port. … Yes, it would raise the cost of imported goods. >It would also help bring the manufacturing jobs home once again.

I have lived in states where safety/smog inspections are done by gas stations, repair shops, quick change oil places, etc., and it was a blatant scam.
In one instance, I pulled a car in that was less than a year old, did not have it in park yet, and the guy was telling me I needed a new muffler which he just happened to have in stock.
In another instance, I was told I needed a new windshield in my truck which the guy offered to replace…because of a small rock ship in the lower corner.

True….you can see the red anti-collision lights on the top of the span…those lights have to get power from somewhere, hence the sparks at the points of separation of the bridge. It was a nice catch by those who spotted the sparks, but no doubt that’s what it was.

What appear to be small explosions can be either structural failure points or electrical systems shorting out as the structure came apart. Of course, they could be well located Semtex or C4 charges too.
I posted elsewhere in the thread about the reversing mechanisms on large marine diesels and also smoke on start, whether reversing or after a failure. It’s not uncommon to get a soot event on start, even in modern, efficient, engines, depending on the throttle setting commanded upon that start. In an emergency, that could’ve been any throttle level. If not inhibited by the engine control systems, then overfueling can be the result.
I think it’s healthy to examine all aspects of such events, like you mentioning an altered or fake video. Certainly possible.

You can find another video more from a distance that shows the “flower” water formation come out of the water before the ship hit. The explosives were underwater and would not have formed such a uniform “flower” shape if it was just waves from the ship.
100% certainty is was a demolition of that bridge.
That wasn’t water.
It was powdered concrete dust from the pylon being severed.
Watch close and you’ll realize nothing came from the surface of the water, there wasn’t even a splash from the ship, the dust erupted at the height of the break on the pylon and flew out and down from there.
Also, come on, the pictures clearly show the severed pylon right where the bow of the ship struck it, an underwater detonation would not have had any effect at that height, and if if was severed below the waterline then it wouldn’t still be partially standing above water at all, as it clearly is.
Actually, probably what we are seeing there is the bulb hitting the concrete pier column under water.

That’s typical of NTSB type investigations. We see it all the time with plane crashes and incidents. A preliminary report comes out in a month or two, then it’s a couple years for the final one.

Yes, and even on maneuvering fuel, which is generally a light diesel product, during an emergency start/reverse stop event, overfueling can result in a soot event.
Something our large marine diesel folks here could expand upon is whether the engine control systems will allow a commanded full throttle start, or any throttle above idle if starting/re-starting the engine from a dead stop. Also, they could comment whether this is a direct drive engine which stops to provide reverse thrust by actually reversing itself. That’s common in large marine diesels.
Lastly, they could comment on the bow thruster(s) or not. IME, many similar ships have one or more electrically driven bow thruster(s). The thruster itself operates on high voltage and has low voltage electric over hydraulic pitch control to tune the thrust beyond rpm of the drive. Such a system could account for any unusual slew in the ship’s path.

With the amount of hazardous material and fuel in those containers, I believe a tugboat assist would be a must. For the pilot to request them AFTER the impact should raise some red flags. The 2 year time reference for a completed report is not uncommon. Ive read many NTSB reports up until 2011, and back then, they did a great job.

Tugboats are thousands of dollars an hour. Vessel companies use them as little as possible. I believe damages are determined under admiralty law, and the payout determined by vessel tonnage. So yes, taxpayers will pay. Perhaps there is someone more knowledgeable m this area, but I think this is correct.

Anyone who’s sat, wondering, on a plane that has ‘problems’, usually with electronics/hydraulics, at the gate can empathize, both from the standpoint of delay and also with ‘never should have left’.
However, there are systems and processes for managing the very complex systems on aircraft and mega ships and, if followed, they keep the vessel well within the margins of safety/redundancy.
Still, with anything humans have built, or even in nature, accidents happen. We don’t know, yet, whether this is an accident or nefarious activity. We can speculate. My mind is open to both possibilities. In any event, it’s provided impetus to learn more about large ships. Life is like that 🙂

IME, any engine designed to burn bunker fuel will burn almost anything that kinda approximates fuel. Bunker C is nasty stuff. IDK if that’s what this vessel burns at sea but it’s customary. Also, modern ships in this class generally have dual fuel systems; one for maneuvering in harbor and coastal waters, and runs on regular diesel like we’re used to, and then bunker fuel for the open sea. My understanding is this is for emission/pollution reasons as bunker fuel produces more soot/pollution.
I’ve only been on one bunker fueled ship, the old France when it was a cruise ship, and its boilers (steam turbine ship) produced a good bit of visible soot out the stacks even at cruise loads in open ocean.

I finally allowed myself to watch the video, a man in that industry (shipping) did a minute by minute commentary and I saw at least one, think there were two, vehicles go in the water off the bridge as it was collapsing and that’s what drives me crazy with the press only mentioning a crew of 6 that were working on the bridge at the time. I suspect that there will be more than that when all the bodies are finally recovered.

Saw an episode of ‘Engineering Catastrophe’ last night where a ship totally went astray, hitting a bridge far from the channel, like three pylons away. To make things worse, it was a a bridge that raises a section for ships and stopped the cars on the bridge, so loss of life was large.
Definitely not enough to stop that either. But there were little concrete islands in front of the bridge supports next to the passage.
Ships today are a completely different beast from those which existed in the early-mid 70’s when the bridge and it’s shipping safety devices were designed and constructed.
Also, that was a time of conflict and domestic social and economic strife and we saw the results of that in many areas.
That was the first thing I thought of when watching the bridge go down. Built to the barest degree engineering and safety standard of the era. Very efficient, cost-wise, and it worked fine for nearly 50 years so there’s that.

In the video Watson reveals this same ship was involved in an accident last year in Europe when it slammed into a dock. The entire crew is Indian. The implication is these aren’t the best or brightest running the vessel.
After the incident I reviewed a number of mega ship personal videos posted on Youtube to gain a better understanding of the vessels from a crew standpoint. All the narration that I watched was with a decided Indian accent.
However, I found the narrators to be quite conversant with the function and engineering of the systems they were describing as they took the viewer through the maze of ship compartments, and particularly in the engine, electrical and thruster compartments.
I’d expect competency to vary widely, as it did among my fellow machinists in my work world, and any other trade or skill.
Usually, at this level of shipping, in a harbor/shipping channel, the local pilot(s) handle the orders and the crew follows those orders and there is plenty of redundancy in the process and alternative control methodologies which can be used.
I think, for anyone not conversant with the type, watching such videos would be quite eye-opening. Things have come a long way from the old tramp steamers and scruffy crews of the past. Still, they got the job done 🙂
Experts say that if the engines were working they provide support for steering even if the ship loses power.
Without engines a ship has no steering. There must be thrust over the rudder to turn the vessel. Without thrust the rudder is useless.
This presumes the ship has no directional thrusters. Did this ship have such thrusters? If yes, were they under power or failed? What type? I’ve seen integral and azimuth thrusters on other ships. I failed to find, upon cursory investigation, how this ship is configured. Any ideas?
Since such thrusters generally operate on high voltage, in the thousands of volts, electrical power, which is provided by on-board generators separate from the prime mover, an electrical failure could disable them. However, there are redundant electrical systems on the ship, forex multiple electrical pathways and redundant generators, each with the capacity to run essential systems.
These ships truly are engineering marvels. However, human factors can never be ruled out. They can defeat even the best engineering practices.

In general, shearing failures and/or electrical shorts, particularly in enclosed spaces like in bridge construction, can mimic explosives. We can’t rule out explosives, yet, but the other reasons are also in play.
The good news is explosives generally leave residues which are easy to detect. Also, their work is usually pretty easy to discern from structural failure when examining the steel structure at failure points.

If you take the time to watch the vids. There are no cars on the bridge when it falls into the bay. The only vehicles on the bridge have flashing caution lights. Most likely were construction crew vehicles.
Because of the Mayday call issued by the harbor pilots before the ship hit the bridge, the toll gates were closed stopping traffic.

It was the toll booths that closed the Key bridge. After the mayday the toll booths simply left the gates down blocking traffic. No heroes involved. Except for the persons who pushed the Off button. The booths are mostly automatic and use the Easy Pass system.
