My son graduated from High School with a 4.0. He got an unsolicited ‘free ride’ offer from Harvard that spring. We are white, from a Red State. We discussed it together and for various reasons, he decided instead to attend our local university with a 100% scholarship. He now works in an adjacent Red State as an engineer making 6 figures. He is so glad to have made the right choice and we are happy too.
As a side note, he wears his hair in a man bun or pony tail for all you people who like to stereotype. He rock climbs every week and back-country skis in winter. Those communities are overwhelmingly liberal. He climbs and skis with them anyway, figures out who is who pretty quick, doesn’t let on and otherwise wastes no mental capital on them. His very best climbing buddies however are the few conservatives. We often have very deep conversations about wokism and that sort of thing. He sees it more than me. Several of his co-workers have been surprised to discover that he conceal carries, loves shooting and owns several caliber rifles and bags the occasional elk or deer. How does the saying go, ‘You can’t always judge a book by its ….’
