WASHINGTON DC – Rep. Mike Johnson won a closed-door contest on Tuesday night to become his party’s fourth speaker nominee.
Now, the Louisiana lawmaker faces the much tougher task of securing the 217 votes he needs to win on the House floor. Earlier Tuesday, Johnson came in second to Majority Whip Tom Emmer, who then withdrew after former President Donald Trump publicly came out against him.
So, Republicans went back to the drawing board, and made Johnson the latest aspirant to a position the fractured and exhausted conference can’t seem to fill. He beat out a field of four other candidates, including Byron Donalds in the final ballot by a 128 to 29 vote. Some 44 other Republicans didn’t vote for either of the two men.
After winning the nomination, Johnson said he was “very confident” that he could get 217 votes and said “the intention is to go to the floor” for a vote on Wednesday. (more)

Mike Johnson’s Conservative Review “Liberty Score” voting record is 74% or a “C” rating. Better than any of the current House leadership which is in the 50’s or an “F” rating. When San Fran Nan tore up Trump’s State of the Union speech in 2020, Johnson said on Fox News that “she committed a Federal felony”. Nothing was done about it, but at least he spoke out.

Because the Speakership can be filled by any American citizen who would be qualified to run for Congress and because the Demcommie 211 votes will always be cast for the Demcommie Minority leader, unless they can get the most pliable Repug they can in the House floor vote. If Repugs can’t get to the floor with a candidate that the Demcommies will not vote for, they have no control over who gets to be the speaker with their 221 votes. All they can do is choose their own candidates and get their choice to the floor and hope that at least all but 217 of their own members will support him/her.
So far, MAGA has only about 30 solid members of the Repug Party, and they are not members of the GOPe Club. So, our only hope is to settle for a candidate who mostly supports us and also can keep the GOPe from sabotage of the outcome on the House floor. We had better realize that who we elect to Congress will determine how much power we have to influence decisions there. On the negative (there may be more, this is one): Johnson voted with McCarthy to raise the debt ceiling.
One more positive for Johnson relates to the funding of House races in 2024. The Speaker controls the House campaign war chest. McCarthy had used it as a weapon against MAGA, actively spending the funds to elect GOPe and to defeat MAGA candidates.
Johnson supports President Trump. If Johnson wins then the House campaign funds will no longer be weaponized against MAGA candidates and may even be used to support the election of more MAGA.
I understand the frustration and skepticism about RINOs, but I get tired of reading and hearing some conservatives say that all GOP are RINOs and even worse that we shouldn’t even bother to vote. That’s an extremely negative and defeatist attitude.
Imho, the 125 House Republicans who signed the amicus challenging the ’20 election and who generally support Trump/MAGA should not be disregarded and lumped in with the RINOs. That includes some (including my rep.) who might have imperfect liberty scores similar to Mike Johnson.
Recognizing the fraud and challenging the certification in ’20 and supporting MAGA are huge imo and make up for some votes that aren’t perfectly conservative.
If elected, Johnson will be a HUGE upgrade over mccarthy and every speaker we’ve had for decades.

Trying to interpret that look on his face in the big pic….. it’s either too-soft/wimpy (quick glance first impression) or “Go ahead, just try me.” Something in the eyes.
One of Johnson’s colleagues, a representative from the Nashville area, was on the radio this morning and said Johnson almost joined the Freedom Caucus and, though he did not join, is “aligned” with it. I take it McCarthy did not even “almost” join it.
Trump endorses Johnson.
Johnson would appear to be an improvement over McCarthy. Therefore, if Johnson wins and is made speaker, Gaetz and his cohort will have won. It will have taken a bit of luck, but they will have won.
If that occurs, then Levin owes Gaetz an apology and needs to withdraw his call for Gaetz and his cohort to be primaried. Gaetz won the bet; Levin was wrong. (For my money, Gaetz was right to oust McCarthy regardless of the result, but that’s another matter.)
In addition, Levin should thereafter stick with ideas. He is an ideas man (Constitution, Founding Fathers, Marxism, etc.) He is a poor political analyst. His ideas radio is good radio. His political analysis radio, with all his high-pitched shouting, is not.
