WASHINGTON DC – Rep. Mike Johnson won a closed-door contest on Tuesday night to become his party’s fourth speaker nominee.
Now, the Louisiana lawmaker faces the much tougher task of securing the 217 votes he needs to win on the House floor. Earlier Tuesday, Johnson came in second to Majority Whip Tom Emmer, who then withdrew after former President Donald Trump publicly came out against him.
So, Republicans went back to the drawing board, and made Johnson the latest aspirant to a position the fractured and exhausted conference can’t seem to fill. He beat out a field of four other candidates, including Byron Donalds in the final ballot by a 128 to 29 vote. Some 44 other Republicans didn’t vote for either of the two men.
After winning the nomination, Johnson said he was “very confident” that he could get 217 votes and said “the intention is to go to the floor” for a vote on Wednesday. (more)

The speaker needs the votes of a majority of members present. A democrat wins only if some “republicans” vote for him, or if they don’t show up to vote at all. If that happens, then the republicans deserve to lose.

A note about Emmer who appears to be histoire as a Speaker; he had to be bad for Trump to reverse himself, then publicly condemn him as a Speaker candidate, Trump doesn’t do that typically, he lets these guys and dolls try to conduct their affairs for themselves; if McCarthy gets back in the game, Trump may let him fly again, ‘cuz I think Trump knows who KMc is, but he thinks he can influence him.

I’m hoping this guy makes it. I mean I wanted Donalds like most of us, but there really was a legitimate question about whether his (relative lack of) experience could cause him problems. TONS of organizational skills needed for the job, and who knows whether Byron could have held up. But Johnson… for a number of reasons I’m comfortable with him. And unless he’s a total fraud, he’s a big supporter of President Trump, including not being afraid to say the election was “questionable” (to say the least). But either way, Donalds or Johnson, I think we’ll be good… especially when considering we came THIS close to having Slime Emmer!

I will be happy and greatly surprised if Johnson becomes speaker. Being very conservative and a Trump ally are very high hurdles to clear to get to 217.
The process has devolved into intra-party warfare, and the GOPe may perceive the outcome to have existential implications. Further, it appears the conservative minority knows they have the votes to maintain gridlock indefinitely, but that may induce a RINO and Dem coalition to assure the conservatives are defeated.
And now, senate RINOs are attacking PDJT for expressing his opinion on Emmer.

I have the sneaky suspicion no one is going to get it soon.
