WASHINGTON DC – Opposition to Jim Jordan’s speakership bid is increasing, as the Ohio Republican again failed to get the 217 votes he needs to win the gavel.
After halting voting for nearly a day in hopes of securing more Republican votes, Jordan instead lost two more votes on the second ballot. The House then went into another recess, at Jordan’s request, before a possible third vote. The GOP is expected to hold a conference meeting Wednesday afternoon as it keeps searching for a way out of its speaker mess.
Jordan’s total number of Republican opponents reached 22 on the second round of voting. With the list of defectors growing, even after a significant delay, his chances at the gavel are looking virtually nonexistent.
Despite that outlook, Jordan spokesperson Russell Dye said in a statement after the vote: “We’re going to keep going.”
Jordan himself told reporters that he was unsure when a third ballot would take place but vowed that “we’ll keep talking to members, keep working on it.”
He flipped two prior opponents — Reps. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) and Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) — but still lost ground in the broader tally. GOP Reps. Vern Buchanan (Fla.), Drew Ferguson (Ga.), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (Iowa) and Pete Stauber (Minn.) all flipped against Jordan after previously backing him in the first ballot.
Several other Jordan opponents — Reps. Mike Kelly (Pa.) and John James (Mich.) — changed their votes to other alternative candidates. (read more)

I also just got off the phone with a staffer. I asked why he flip flopped and she said he saw dwindling support so pulled his vote and voted for a ? Westmoreland? who has ZERO support. So, he voted against Jordan because others did?
Staubers website talks about principled leadership so I asked the staffer how is following a small crowd leadership? She then stated something about someone who can unite the republicans. I asked why Stauber would vote for someone that is not even running for speaker and that this is not about playing games. How will someone not even running for speaker unite republicans? It’s dumb!
I then suggested that since some voted for Scalise and McCarthy who both support Jordan so why wouldn’t Stauber and these others just vote for Jordan. This is crazy. I think he wants something and I don’t know what.
I finished with urging the congressman to support Jordan and show real leadership. If things don’t work out he can surely submit a motion to vacate down the road.

The internecine warfare within the GOP House circus is now in the center ring under the brightest lights.
We knew that the GOPe would not allow a conservative Speaker, no matter the exposure of its tactics. The second vote, and an immediate third vote, if not blocked, was intended to slap Jordan and his conservative cohort into both reality and acceptance of his failed candidacy. It did not matter that Scalise was exposed as a back stabbing, faux supporter of Jordan, and additional “No” votes against him were secured for emphasis. The message was intended to be sent loudly and clearly to Jordan and all conservatives.
The GOPe message was delivered, but its conspiratorial, heavy handed transparency sufficiently angered the targets that they appear now to have decided to retaliate with their votes on succeeding roll calls for as long as it takes to have their conservative voices heard, be the candidate Jim Jordan or anyone else.
The GOPe is desperate to restore McCarthy, with the effort headed by Gimenez from FL, to immediately restore its reign. That being a fool’s errand, finding an electable member after Jordan withdraws could be a Titanic ocean crossing experience.
