(Via Wall Street Journal) – The U.S. military has selected roughly 2,000 troops to prepare for a potential deployment to support Israel, U.S. defense officials said.
The troops are tasked with missions like advising and medical support, the officials said, and they are from across the U.S. armed services. They aren’t intended to serve in a combat role, the officials said. No infantry have been put on prepare-to-deploy order.
The troops are currently stationed both inside the Middle East and outside, including Europe, the officials said. It isn’t clear under what circumstances the U.S. could deploy the troops or to where, but the Pentagon decision signaled it is preparing to support Israeli troops should Israel launch a ground incursion into Gaza.
It is unclear how many of those troops, should they be deployed, would go into Israel. But the officials said that at least some of them could enter the country to support Israeli forces. A predeployment order doesn’t mean the troops will certainly deploy but rather shortens the time troops need to be ready to move. (more)

In 1969 I had the duty of unloading dead soldiers @ McCord Airforce Base. Stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington the duty was in close proximity. I assisted for 5 months. Anywhere from 15 to 25 bodies ont time a month. Changed my perspective of life forever. I was 20 years young. RIP to the buddies we list.
I joined that waccs in 71. Worked stateside in hospitals….the doctors that had their careers interrupted by being drafted had very bitter attitudes.
On the other hand, the doctors that were volunteer lifers were subpar, could not make on the ” outside”.

Maybe no ‘infantry troops’ per se (converional) but I’ll bet there are Army Special Forces (green berets) going in if not already there.

Training foreign troops / lead and advise;
Foreign internal defense;
Direct action (hostage rescue / counter terrorism), amongst other things.
You’re wrong. The IDF is not the AFU. No advisors or trainers needed. No US combat formation needed. What is needed is for US social justice voyeurs to STFU.

I know when I was in, cross training and joint ops were conducted with top tier foreign allied militaries all the time.
SAS were regular ‘visitors’ to Ft Bragg (Camp Lejune also) back in the day and I can assure you they didn’t need advice nor training either. Even saw some German spec ops come thru once.
Those SF units have seen a LOT of live, ongoing ops under the worst of conditions for long periods of time over the last 20 years on multiple 1 year tours per trooper. Experience is always appreciated by both sides.
And I didn’t say anything about ‘combat formations.’ That was conventional unit lingo in my day.

We are beefing up our forces throughout the region: In the Mediterranean Sea, Jordan, and the Persian Gulf.
Brings back fond memories of the Cold War when I was part of Marine Security Detachment at Sigonella, Sicily during the early 1980s. Back then we had two carrier strike groups in the Mediterranean at all times. Looks like the 6th Fleet is getting its groove back.
The IDF was initially expected go in yesterday and today. However, from the Israeli media, the story is that Israel is taking the Hezbollah threat seriously and requires additional time to ensure it can meet this threat. Israeli cities along the northern border with Lebanon are being evacuated in anticipation that Hezbollah will make good on its promise to attack in Israel in strength the moment the IDF enters Gaza.
Israeli military leaders have slowed down their timetable to ensure the ground attack into Gaza is not a repeat of the summer 2006 war with Hezbollah, when the untested IDF blitz into southern Lebanon turned into a slow-moving, clumsy shit show.
Finally, the delivery of U.S. support is ongoing, and in my opinion, U.S. and Israeli military leaders are conducting joint planning for contingencies involving Hezbollah and Iran. That more U.S. F-15E Strike Eagles and A-10 aircraft are being deployed to Jordan tells me that Iran’s military assets and proxy forces in Syria are going to get hammered hard in the event Israel finds itself in deep geostrategic trouble.
Let’s hope the threat of a severe U.S.-Israel beatdown keeps Hezbollah and Iran in check.

Yes. If I were Iran, unless I received direct, explicit promises of Russian and Chinese military support, up to and including the direct deployment of Russian and Chinese military forces inside Iran, the Iranian proxy network is not going to war against Israel or the United States. Even with that support, there is no way I would ever allow Iran to become the cats paw of Russia or China in the same way that Ukraine has become U.S. cats paw against Russia – unless the Iranian mainland is attacked.
The United States has awesome destructive fire power under its control, more than enough to wreck Iran as a functioning society, not including nukes. And Iran respects that fact, even if its official rhetoric is belligerent toward the United States.
That said, Russia might be tempted to provide supersonic antiship missiles to Hezbollah along with up-to-the-minute targeting data for our carriers. Russian has strong motive to hit the U.S. back for helping Ukraine sink the Moskva, which was the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet. I would accept the missiles, but hold them in reserve.

As I commented upthread, I think spec ops are being deployed, some SF (definite 5th Group, maybe elements from 3rd and/or 10th) units maybe already inside (for foreign internal defense – internal security assistance) in case Israel units were to get stretched thin fighting 2 fronts.
If we are going to contemplate or conduct air strikes over land or in support of Israeli ground ops, they most likely will be sending in AF CCT ops teams also for targeting for Navy or AF air to surface strikes as well AF pararescue for the contingency of any our pilots going down. Those guys have to be prepositioned before air strikes occur.
