According to multiple DC media sources, a quiet effort is underway by members of the professionally republican mindset to kick Matt Gaetz out of the House Republican caucus. However, the advocates worry they will be primaried by voters in their district, as the population of Republican voters supports Gaetz. It is a duplicitous dynamic.
Meanwhile, Kevin McCarthy has told his Republican conference that despite prior statements, he will not attempt to become the House Speaker again and will instead retire to his home district in California.
No one is quite sure what comes next; what is clear is that Gaetz has channeled the frustration of the Republican/MAGA base into an actionable result. This should not come as a surprise to the GOPe, although many of the cloistered clan continue pretending not to understand the dynamic at play.
Allow me to provide some simple clarity.
♦ In 2009 72% of the country, and an even larger percentage of the Republican voters, did not want Obamacare. The govt takeover of healthcare was along purely ideological grounds. For the 2010 midterm election, the professional Republican apparatus campaigned on this single issue – repeal Obamacare. The voters destroyed the Democrats and flipped 67 seats to Republican control. The professional Republicans wanted the House, frustrated American voters gave it to them.
The Republicans did nothing.
♦ In 2012, the professional Republicans campaigned on retaining the House and asked to begin a process of taking down the Democrat control of the Senate. Remember, it was a 60/40 Senate when the Obamacare boondoggle was begun. Keep the House, help us take Senate seats, and we will repeal Obamacare and balance the budget. That was the call of the 2012 professional Republicans. The voters delivered. The GOPe kept the house, took 6 seats in the Senate and introduced a wave of fresh Republican blood.
The Republicans did nothing.
♦ In the 2014 midterm election, the professional Republicans campaigned on retaining the House and now flipping the Senate with more GOP seats. Keep the House, give us the Senate majority, and we will repeal Obamacare and deliver a balanced budget. The voters again delivered. Beginning in January 2015, the Republicans controlled the House and the Senate majorities for Obama’s last two years.
The Republicans did nothing.
Worse still, even with professional Republican control of both chambers of congress, President Obama never had to use his veto pen.
♦ In the 2016 election, after the professional Republicans could no longer stop/block candidate Donald Trump, they said if we get the White House, retain the House and retain the Senate, we will repeal Obamacare, return to regular budgetary order, and balance the budget. Stunningly, against all the odds, the voters yet again delivered. President Trump won the election; Republicans now held the White House, the House and the Senate – as requested.
The Republicans did nothing.
Worse still, the professional Republicans acted as if they were the dog that just caught the car. Now they had no excuses, and as a result there was an exodus of retirements announced from the caucus of the professionally Republican to begin in 2018.
Simultaneously, the professional Republicans passively allowed the targeting of Donald Trump by a fully weaponized intelligence apparatus and justice system to commence. To say the professionally Republican were willfully blind would be polite and generously honest.
In the background the RNC did nothing. The California ballot harvesting operation of 2018 reflected a complete lack of action by the RNC or CA GOP. We all well remember how that operation expanded nationwide in 2020, again with the RNC doing nothing.
This is the reality of what took place between the elections of 2010 and 2020. Every ask of the professionally rRpublican apparatus was delivered by voters. Every ask of the voters in return was ignored. Effective January 2021, Obamacare still exists, no budget was ever produced, the borders were unsecured, the economy tanked due to Biden policy, energy and printing presses. Crises, along with insufferable government mandates, amplified and expanded from coast to coast.
The Green New Deal was passed by Republicans and Democrats, and the collapse of the economy came with it.
Clear enough?
Suddenly, as if there was no background of repeated broken promises and a complete failure to deliver on any key request, Kevin McCarthy and his legion of professionally Republican supporters pretend they cannot fathom why the base voters are more than happy to support Matt Gaetz.

The California Republican informed his members behind closed doors Tuesday night that he will forsake another attempt to win the top job after his ouster on Tuesday, according to seven people familiar with the remarks.
His announcement comes amid intense anger over his ouster by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and seven other GOP members, who voted with House Democrats to eject him earlier Tuesday. Most Republicans vocally opposed his eviction.
McCarthy told his conference that he would return to California to spend time with his family. In his stead, the House will be run by Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), his hand-picked choice as acting speaker. House Republicans have no plans to return to session until next week, scrapping their plans to try to pass party-line spending bills.
The vacancy atop the House is sure to set off a scramble among ambitious Republicans — one that’s likely to get dirty and dragged-out, particularly if McCarthy’s deputies try to ascend. The GOP agrees that the most obvious choices are Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) and Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), all of whom had publicly backed McCarthy until he bowed out.
“I might have been given a bad break, but I’m still the luckiest man alive,” McCarthy said, according to multiple people in the room when he revealed he would not, as he’d vowed, keep trying to stay speaker.

My take is that Matt Gaetz recognized that the one thing the two most effective Republican Presidents in living memory, Reagan and Trump, had in common was that they did what they said what they were going to do. McCarthy signed on to this deal to vacate the Speaker’s seat and then thought it would never come to pass. Gaetz, either analytically or intuitively, realized that GOP writ large had to do what it said it would do to maintain any semblance of credibility. What comes next? We’ll see. But whatever it is, it can’t be worse than Uniparty rule.

This is exactly correct. Among the greatest blows dealt to the GOPe (at an institutional level) by President Trump was the destruction of the number one myth in American politics: the expectation of elected representatives fulfilling campaign promises is unrealistic. It is also, in my view, along with the full exposure of the uniparty/deep state, the greatest gift to the electorate he could have given.
Why would someone need to look at the history of presidents to figure out that people want–nay, even EXPECT–a person to do what he or she promised?

MAGA needs to be visible with less talk and more action. Peaceful demonstrations in red states. It won’t be easy. Those that come must be willing to ‘not’ be drawn away from peaceful actions. Build a wall by locking arm to arm. Voices raised in unity, not anger. Know what you’re going to say then say it perhaps by a person inside the wall, Show we support our President Trump and what he stands for.
And that is a thoughtful response of at least one of many potential ways to address, at least in part, to the many questions I posed.
McCarthy really is still running. If there is such a vacuum, why take a week off to reconvene? -smoked filled rooms in the swamp!

In my opinion, McCarthy just did his job delaying anything outside the demands of the powers that be. Thankfully he did not get away with it for to long. Wisdom, if there is such a thing in DC is needed to proceed.
This is a great summary of why the GOP, despite lopsided polling on issue after issue, keeps losing. Voters who remembered 1994 thought 2010-2012 would deliver a similar shakeup to a president whose policies had run far, FAR more left than what he campaigned on (a familiar story.) In my lifetime, I’ve never seen a faster or more thorough betrayal of voter mandate than that delivered by Boehner and Ryan. Trump won because he vociferously vowed to hit back and fight for the very promises the beltway GOP made but didn’t want to fulfill.
I went to my (pretty red) polling place in 2022 and saw the shortest lines in a mid-term election I’ve seen since 2006. There was no enthusiasm. The Three Mc’s acted like they didn’t even want a majority, much less the sort of red wave that polling data suggested was coming.
The RNC will continue to underperform until they learn who the real enemy is.

Regardless of who the new speaker is, I suspect, they will continue down the same road to bankruptcy we have been on since Nixon took the USA off the gold standard, so he would not have to return all the gold we stole from Europe under the guise of saving it from the Nazi’s in WWII. If republicanism is a political party, why are there no dues. If you want to be a member of the NRA, dues are a given. It seems to me if dues are a requirement for membership, it might blunt the power of billionaires to buy policy through contributions. There are 33 million American registered republicans at and annual membership due of $100 the party would have $3.3 Billion on hand. What would one million dollar donation buy against the rank and files 3.3 Billion.
So, should 60 million MAGA citizens write their Congressional representative and tell them to vote for Donald Trump as Speaker?

While I completely agree with this sentiment, it is a sad statement in the respect that being a representative of the people was not meant to become a career; it was supposed to be an act of public service. Because the government has grown so far beyond the perimeter established by the founders of this once great nation, it has attracted nothing but corrupt individuals – or corrupted those elected with good intentions – hell bent on retaining these positions of power in order to enrich themselves at the expense of the people they are supposed to represent. The corruption runs very wide and very deep; however, a good start would be unseating those who support the deep state.
First off, we knew without question that this speakership was doomed to failure and would end badly as as soon as it began. McCarthy is just bad news, as are, unfortunately, the majority of house republicans.

A couple of suggestions FWIW for the next GOP Speaker:
*Re-assign democratic committee members just like Pelosi did with the J6 committee.
* Release all J6 video, along with whatever remaining records and testimony have not been destroyed.
* Close all ‘hidden offices’
* EVERY vote from here on out would be a roll call vote.
* There will be no more closed door hearings.
* There will be no vote for spending for Z until the government is fully funded with a defined budget for each department for a period of at least 2 years.
* Nothing that the senate sends over as a ‘budget’ will be considered. It is the responsibility of the House to originate all spending bills.
*The guy pulling the fire alarm will be referred for prosecution under the same statutes that the J6 folks were prosecuted under and held without bail or access to an attorney.
In short actually do something on behalf of your constituents. I know….old habits die hard.

The democrats wanted to protect the Bidens from the blackmail by the Ukraine government which included releasing all the money Bidens received from the Ukraine government if the war financing was not approved and McCarthy went along with the democrats. Therefore some republicans refused to go along.
Don’t believe there’s any requirement that the Speaker be a member of the House. Why not go outside the House and select as Speaker THE currently most popular office seeker in the country?

Republicans always work on the wrong things. The first thing Democrats do when they win is change the election laws to tilt in their favor.
We all know that this communism is coming out of our universities. They are breeding grounds for radical Democrats. In about half the states, Republicans have dictatorial control over their states. They are trifecta states. Why don’t the Republicans take control of their universities and get rid of the communists. Answer: Because they work on the wrong things.
The Republicans allow the Executive agencies like the FBI, DOJ, State Dept., etc., to stonewall them. Congress funds these agencies. They can write into their funding that they have the right to send representatives to any agency they fund. No more stonewalling. Again, the Republicans never think to work on this.
We now know why Republicans don’t work on these things…because many of them are not Republicans.

A blocking strategy might feel good, and in many cases might “do good” by preventing/not funding nefarious government operations. Ultimately, the operations that vast majorities want MUST be funded (military, law enforcement, courts, prisons, border control, response to natural disasters, counter-terrorism, etc.,); laws passed; nominees confirmed; foreign relations conducted and supervised, even debt authorized, etc.
Do “conservatives” have the votes to pass legislation exactly to their liking, get it approved by the Senate, and signed by the President? Obviously not. When we get to the point that critical operations become necessary, compromises WILL occur, and we will be left with considerably less than desired. Gaetz is attempting to reorient the GOP scrum to push in the correct direction, so that is something. But his methods necessarily hobble the team effort (to the extent there s a team). McCarthy would not have been Speaker if he didn’t have a following (no doubt built and reinforced on a complex structure of carrots and sticks); I can only guess that it’s members are unhappy with the coup d’etat, and are thinking about how to rebuild their own fortunes (something shrewd successor will have to reassemble).
What is Gaetz’s plan to unify the Rs sufficiently to achieve success with legislation? Who is defining the Rs’ legislative agenda (which will not be the same as a “conservative” agenda)? Gingrich found success as a bombthrower, but also provided a detailed map with concensus destinations. Only when Republicans and/or conservatives can envision themselves GOVERNING properly will they ever get there or to some close proximity. Where will leadership be found?
