Two good facets for Southern California as Hilary arrives. First, she’s losing power and has dropped into strong tropical storm strength. Second, she’s moving north very fast at 25 mph, which is contributing to the weakening. The storm event should be complete for the state in less than 24 hours. That said, the rain and flooding look to be the biggest issue for the region. [NHS Information]
Six to ten inches of heavy rain with sustained winds of 40 mph+, with higher gusts, can create major issues for an area of hard soil that doesn’t generally get large amounts of rain in a short period of time. Washed out roads, fallen trees, flash flooding and other significant risks associated with this scale of rain are the major concern. As with most storms of this type, if you are in higher elevation areas the wind will be much stronger.
Hurricane Center – {…] At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Hilary was located near latitude 29.7 North, longitude 115.9 West. Hilary is moving quickly toward the north-northwest near 25 mph (41 km/h). Hilary is expected to accelerate even more as it moves north-northwestward to northward during the next day or so. On the forecast track, the center of Hilary will move near or over the northern portion of the Baja California Peninsula during the next few hours, and then move across southern California this afternoon. All preparations should be completed and everyone in the zone of largest impact should remain indoors for the next 24 hours. Power failures are highly likely as the storm will knock out electricity throughout the region. [Good luck to those with EV’s] In the hours immediately following the storm, do not travel. Stay close to home as the emergency service and first responders will activate to the areas of greatest issue.
We have quite a few Treepers in this area. Check in when you can and if you need anything send us an email or drop a comment, I will be checking throughout. The biggest issue I would foresee is the potential for weakened infrastructure, roads, bridges and systems that perhaps have not encountered high pressure or stress for many years.
Always take these things seriously, but do not alarm yourself with dark imaginings. Be prudent, be wise and be safe. Focus on the immediate area around your home, pull your family in close, watch out for each other and mitigate risks from a 100-foot perspective. [If “it” (a risk or threat) is within 100′, that’s your focus.]
Fast moving, which is a good thing.
Lots of rain coming into an area that doesn’t usually get much rain…. that’s not so good.
(VIA CNN) […] Electricity utility Southern California Edison – which serves more than 15 million people in the region – said Thursday Hilary is on track to impact much of its service area. The company said it is preparing to respond to outages but urged residents to gather supplies including flashlights, external battery chargers and ice chests.
Additionally, roadways may be closed “proactively” out of an abundance of caution to ensure safety, according to Tony Tavares, director of the Department of Transportation.
[…] Brian Ferguson, deputy director of the Office of Emergency Services, told CNN Saturday the office is “all hands on deck” for Hurricane Hilary preparation. He said the office is particularly monitoring desert regions as they prepare for heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
“We’re keeping a very close eye on our desert regions, east of San Diego and Los Angeles. Some parts of these areas may receive double their yearly amount of water in just a single day,” he said. “Certainly, we are going to be watching very carefully for flash floods, mudslides and debris flows in that area, looking at the burn scars from fires that have happened in recent years.”
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department issued an evacuation warning for the communities of Oak Glen, Forest Falls, Mountain Home Village, Angelus Oaks, and Northeast Yucaipa. Visitors to Catalina Island, as well as residents with medical, access and functional needs, were “strongly encouraged” to leave the island ahead of the storm in a news release from the City of Avalon. As the breeze from Hillary increased, everyone looked around trying to figure out why they suddenly smelled boiled cabbage, urine, and farts.
Lol
Thank you for this post.
It is those who are out camping, hiking, doing their summertime visits to the national parks in southern California and even on up into the Lake Tahoe area that hopefully are getting the word. People camp in what they think are the valleys and those are the run-off drainage area for most heavy mountain storms.
Living near the crest of a foothill our place is normally high and dry, but getting out into town is often a problem because the roads below us are usually flooded so quick in and out of this storm is definitely good news.
Campers and hikers: get to high ground! Now!
Get to da choppa!
Yeah … whilst dodging Mountain lightning strikes… I’d take that over being in the maw a flashflood in any event.
Good points, luckily it seems like most of the national parks down here are closing. Not sure about the ones that far north. I see warnings from Joshua Tree National Park saying it was shut down as of Yesterday. Also vacation places like Catalina island evacuated yesterday. At least getting the tourists back to the main island.
Good advice there, they may want to Maui the place.
Parks and trails are closed today.
Hope the flooding and/or the reporting gets thi out of control.
Hahaha ha ha ha … she’s canoeing … just like the Native peoples … who never experienced flooding before the white man arrived … with all his iron machines and whatnot
No wonder she could only put the paddle 2″ into the water – what a bunch of frauds!
The global, warmists in every dept. of CA government are crestfallen that the desert corner of the State will be soon removed from their brightly colored drought maps …
https://www.drought.gov/states/california
Ohhhh mommaaaaaaa … they wail … the entire State will be “drought” free now. Ohhhhhhhh mommmmaaaaaa … what will we do for our $six figure salaries?
The drought went away months ago….
Check the map … it’s still here in the desert corner of the State … the target zone for HER hurricane
Actually, until ground water comes back up it will not really be over.
California officials will simply flush all the water into the Pacific Ocean!
Will be happy to see any wind and rain left from this storm hit NE Washington. 2 wildfires are currently burning in the area and smoke from Canadian wildfires have made the air quality the worst in the world. In fact Eastern Washington has 5 of the top 10 worst air numbers in the world.
https://www.khq.com/fires/spokane-metro-area-sees-five-of-the-top-ten-with-the-worst-air-quality-in/article_f794fe42-3eef-11ee-a54e-a70401951939.html
Prayers for your area! Was watching the freeway closures update on wsdot late last night.
There’s gonna be so many car wrecks in LA. Lol Driving in that area is an adventure in a light drizzle ffs.
However … I will admire the fact that everyone will still be driving at 85 mph. Fact is … LA drivers are far more competent (as a whole) than anywhere else.
Considering all the pot holes, shoddy work and multitasking you have to do to avoid idiots going too fast/slow you’re not wrong. I usually refer to it as high speed chess.
The SoCal freeways don’t have potholes. They are actually very good, one of the things the Commies don’t dare screw up with…
…and drivers down here are really good. You should have seen my late mother in law, in her 70s, cruising at 75 on the Number Two lane… when the speed limit was 55!
I love your late MIL! In LA that’s true … however here in N CA our freeways (and all other roadways) are shit. Nobody in government cares. They believe that ratty roads will wreck all those awful automobiles (that EVERYONE drives). They believe that shitty roads will reduce the number of cars. They believe that shitty roads are a middle finger to the unwashed public.
I was working in the East Bay last week. Some of the worst roads I’ve ever been on.
Yep. That’s my side of the Bay. And I’ve driven across the country … in almost every State … all beautifully kept highways with beautiful landscaping … in CA … they all turn to undriveable crap.
DO NOT judge California by the SF Bay Area. It’s a big state and most of the State is quite good.
Driving on the SF Bay Area, though, is a PITA. Bad roads and worse drivers ( pushy, arrogant, entitled, ill mannered).
That kind of behavior, on the 105, will get you on the receiving end of a stolen Glock.
Plenty of stolen glocks being fired on Oakland Fwys … with 580 being particularly dangerous to drive.
https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/new-shooting-on-highway-580-in-oakland-shuts-down-lanes-during-morning-commute/
pro tip: do NOT drive your children ANYWHERE in Oakland. They’re safer taking AC Transit … which is to say your children are unsafe anywhere.
So true … make a WRONG move on the 405 … and you’ll be overturned and on fire. High stakes chess.
“Considering all the potholes,”
Thanks for Reminding me.
My city streets are bad in Southern California.
It doesn’t take much rain to hide huge potholes.
Alignment, tie rods and suspension arm damage?
I’m 10 miles from the ocean.
Light showers, zero wind 74°.
Just finished cleaning one of the rims of my van with rainwater and a broom.
It looks nice and shiny.
hmmm.
I’m thinking if the tire gets stolen, Governor Neusom will blame me.
I have drawn unwanted attention from thieves .
I think someone should be targeting California thieves
In our OC, our roads are great.
Partially true. It’s either 85 or 5. Lol
When LA drivers start driving in snow and ice they might be able to claim overall competency. I learned to drive in NYC and LI and didn’t notice anything good or bad about LA drivers when I lived there.
I live twenty miles or so south of Los Angeles. The rain is picking up but so far no flooding or downed trees or power lines close to me. It is muggy as hell outside. Humidity is something we’re not used to out here.
Hopefully, it won’t be as bad as it’s being reported to be. SoCal media overblows everything when we have a hint of major rainfall, but I guess in this case they were right to sound the alarm and warn us of the potential danger.
Hopefully, it won’t be as bad; but if it should rise to the level of guvmint intervention, let’s see how their response compares to that on Maui.
I live just off the Ventura county coast. Light rain and light winds. Supposed to be heavier later tonight.
In southern Nevada. So far all is well. It rained all night, but gently. A week or two ago it was much more rain. Tonight should be the hardest rain, but one never knows.
Best most informed view yet. We were told to expect torrential rains and winds and it has gone down a level w ea reporting. At least a lot of CA part time firefighters will get a couple more paydays.
Sure, Gruesome, feed that liberal fear.
Keep well, California. Watch for those rock slides and land-gives 🙏
All deaths associated with Hilary will be classified as suicides.
A hundred likes for you!!
Another warning: stay out of any gullies or “arroyos!” Flash floods can develop extremely quickly in these areas. (Even without a “tropical storm.”) And, if there is any water over a low spot, stay out of it! “Turn Around: Don’t Drown.” Even the ordinary summertime “monsoons” in Phoenix, Arizona caught somebody’s car every time. (Rescuers tried their best, but not always with success.) If the water splashes up under the hood and knocks the engine out, you’re stuck in a very bad situation. Especially if your car has electric windows.
The politicians are corrupt… “proactively”….
Achtung… ve know you vill break ze law… so we vill put you in ze jail!
Meanwhile we are getting rain… oh no… it’s raining.
What the corrupt polity and their corporate media monkeys are ignoring is that we routinely get BIG WINTER STORMS and Santa Ana wind episodes that put this here rain to a shame…
Just watch, as usual, the corporate propaganda machine will “forget” about this event tomorrow… as they have done before when a “big storm” barrels into SoCal and then… all we get is partly cloudy skies.
We’re used to it.
Lots and lots of people have been praying, these drought stricken areas would get some well needed water. Now they are!
Make sure to stay away from flash flood areas. And we can hope they stop ‘CRYING ABOUT NOT HAVING WATER’. Must always remind some people we live on a spinning ball in a chaotic Universe where every breath you take is precious. Stop worrying its the life after this one that matters.
We spend summers in San Diego and balance of year in central Florida. I’m not poo-pooing Sundance’s sage advice but we have light rainfall here. Californians are complaining about God’s gift of rain to a parched desert area. It impacts their plans for golf. Oh, there’s only so many days left at the beach before I go back to school, etc.
California got twice the normal rainfall last winter. It rained in July in SD. It rained several times last summer in SD. It was the coolest in SD from Nov to June 22 according to believe it or not, according to the Washington Post. All we hear is hot hot hot in other areas of the country.
Sorry for the rambling.
Very true. Still waiting to here from friends in San Diego. So far, it’s just some light rain.
San Diego Clairemont here, light steady rain started at 2am and hasn’t stopped. A little heavier now, no wind, very still and muggy. Our local church of Christ congregation had Bible class and shortened worship service. A great lesson on worry from Matthew 6, and many scriptures from the Old Testament. Everyone in good spirits even though reports are the worst is yet to come. Our families are all secure now and waiting for what comes our way. God is good and we are living for joy!
…all you’re hearing is endless Climate Change Propaganda!
Funny how the climate changes from August to December. Hang around a few months and the climate just magically changes. When I was a kid we called it the four seasons.
I live in Los Angeles County. So far, (a bit past 11 am) it’s light wind and moderate rain, but according to the Weather Channel, the party isn’t supposed to really get started until past noon. My area isn’t a real flood risk, but the possibility of downed trees and power outages does worry me.
Still nothing major here yet. Just wet. Doing a lot of baking and cleaning the house. We made tin foil boats with the kids and plan to walk the neighborhood a bit when the rain picks up but before the winds come.
So far here in San Diego, rain light to moderate. Wind not a big deal as yet. Since we live on the coast, we’re not going to get the flooding like the inland areas and the high winds. We have plenty of candles and batteries, a good gas range (Oh the pollution) which we can use if the power goes out. In essence, doing good so far.
Thanks. I used to live on the coast and the ocean would flood the first few blocks but mostly left us alone.
San Diego, light rain on and off all morning. Light winds.
Thanks for the update.
I know “climate change” when I see it, hear it, smell it and when others scream it…you can’t fool me!
I heard a rumor that senior citizens in California, in the direct path of this coming climate disaster–caused by none other than “white supremacists” and “Catholic Terrorists” are running to those stores that carry Depends.
Rumor also has it that the Biden Administration will on Monday, declare a national emergency on Depends where only local democrats elected to the high status position of dog catcher will be allowed to distribute Depends…
But only on an Equitable basis, using the recent Maui model for reference!
Unknown sources have confirmed that Hunter Biden is on the board of directors for the manufacturer of Depends and it has leaked out Joe Biden’s Delaware residence, that houses his green Corvette, has received the first of many shipments, forcing his beloved Vette out into the driveway, exposed for all to see. Hunter is said to understand this issue.
3M Manufacturing Company has been awarded an emergency government contract to supply Jill Biden with a dozen boxes of rubber gloves for protection, as is stated in Obama’s policy of Inclusion, written years ago as he was queering up for the publication of his first series of memoirs.
Joe Biden, while presently hiding out…sorry, vacationing at Lake Tahoe, has authorized Kamala Harris to be the Diversity hire for those areas of California impacted by this coming storm. Rumor has it she has texted Willie Brown using his secret email account “Big Willie for You!” asking what he wants her to do.
I have more to say, but my minder just informed me that there are three big, burly and mean looking FBI agents demanding I come to the door of my residence…you can depend on me taking the 5th when asked any questions!
Good luck for those living in California close to this weather. May Allah watch over you infidels!
LOL!
Hope you were kidding about the IRS agents!
Update: Light to moderate rainfall. No wind, at all. Feels like normal rain.
btw, bad news for the Communists, as of last winter, there is no drought in pretty much all of California which means they cant make a case for rationing our water usage. Although they are trying hard to not capture any water run off and let it all spill out into the ocean.
Just got the National Weather Service Emergency Alert pushed onto my phone.
Same thing they would do with the fake covid emergency alerts.
Not me, but then I’m in The OC… we still have a semblance of reality here.
Agreed the rain so far is no heavier than the rain we got a while back. The wind is gusty and picking up a little but not consistent.
It’s pouring with some thunder here in the Palm Desert area. 1:43 pm
Catalina Island. Yes. I know of a family who lost their lives in a storm off the coast of Catalina Island, while out on their boat.
That was who I was thinkig of while I read this all the way to the end.
Praying for safety and sanity for all. Hunker down and man the ports!
We will survive!
Have they blamed climate change and MAGA yet?
We have an El Niño this year. The water shortage is due to no reservoirs built for 50 years and water being wasted on delta smelt baitfish.
As an escapee from CA, and well familiar, I agree 100%.
And now the drainers are back in force wanting to remove Glen Canyon Dam – they seem to think sending all the water to Lake Mead, with over 2 x the evaporation rate will solve the water issue in the West – ignoring the fact if not for Powell, Mead would likely have run dry during this 20-year-drought.
They’re giving climate change plenty of lip service but can’t hide the fact that Mexico and sometimes SO Cal do get these storms. They’re going with “more rain” as climate change component.
… and also “more droughts”
don’tcha know
Color me jaded, but when I first heard the narrative “First time in History a Tropical Storm warning for Southern California” suspicious cat was wide awake. What better for the climate alarmists than being able to repeat that over and over and blame Global Warming for this historic event. I live in Southern California and all the local news stations were repeating the same “First time in history” blah, blah, blah stuff. Anyway, it’s Sunday mid-day in Southern California now, and all despite all the constant emergency alerts on our phones and weather apps, all we’ve had so far is light rain last night and up until 9:00 AM this morning, and just a grey sky since that time. So far, big Whoop! But hey, go out and get your electric vehicle to save the planet from this horrible historic light rain and grey skies.
Shades of the plandemic! Telling you to stay home.
Speaking of electric vehicles, I certainly would never trust the safety of one that had ever been submerged in flood waters. Imagine the possibility of electrical shorts and battery fires, and how much water is needed to extinguish even one fire.
Wrong. 1039 was the first recorded hurricane warning for Southern CA.
I don’t doubt that at all. But it’s what the media is saying, not me, and that’s their narrative and they’re going to stick with it. When have facts gotten in their way before?
Watch out for disappearing children.
San Diego is a big human trafficking center.
Sitting just north of San Diego enjoying a much needed gentle rain.
Slow steady rain, no surface wind, deluge not seen….yet.
On the bright side, the Brown Smelt will get a lot of water! /s
I haven’t seen the homeless population addressed. Have they and their stuff all been picked up and put inside somewhere? I haven’t seen that anyone is taking care of them.
I addressed the homeless situation a bit earlier upthread, but here’s some additional information:
The City of San Diego just implemented a total ban on homeless encampments at the beginning of August and they all were gone within the first week or so. I did notice the police going around yesterday and scooping up a few people who were crashed out on the sidewalks and assumedly taking them to shelters. The remaining problems would be any homeless encampments that are hidden up in the canyons and back country, and supposedly the homeless have now moved to Chula Vista and other areas outside the SD City limits.
I don’t know what they’re doing up in LA which has a much larger homeless issue.
It’s pretty much pooped out here.
Steady rainfall in Malibu at 12:00. No wind, ocean flat, air is warm.
Pacific Ocean, well named.
Same in the Conejo Valley.
I’m smack in the pathway of this storm in S. Nevada and we’ve had almost constant rain, heavy at times but right now seems to be in a lull.
We don’t get a lot of precip normally but when we do get a lot, being in a valley means flash floods and thick mud flows from the surrounding high terrain that if it catches you out on foot or on a quad, you may not be seen again. The mud flows can be several feet deep and they move like lava then solidify until a larger flow years later comes along.
Most who live here (2.5 people per square mile) are self sufficient by nature as the nearest law enforcement, medical or fire response is 45 minutes away and if there’s flooding over the only highway in or out, it could be a lot longer.
Not a lot we can do about it except keep an eye on the water levels and hope the roof doesn’t leak.
This will be gone in a couple of days and we can survey and I can get back to blissful retirement.
My family lives in Burbank, CA. First, they were told to expect 10-12″ of rain Monday. Today’s forecast is a 40% chance of rain Monday.
The media plays these events as a climate change disaster, when in reality 80% fear mongering, 20% true disasters. gotta keep the green deal awash with $$$ sacrificing actual human suffering, as in Maui. Not diminishing any bad outcome for San Diego County, but other than that this is not a devastating climate change disaster that they want us to believe. CA is not going to be devastated.
I wonder if Biden is looking for an excuse to not fly to Maui. If there is a lot of rain bet he flakes out of Trip.
The rain seems heavier inland. Here are a couple of guys traveling through Imperial Valley:
They really hoping for a tornado.
This guy is driving through El Centro, which is about 2 hours East of San Diego:
Is that rain ?
If anyone dies because of the storm will they be listed as suicides?
Either suicides or covid-19 deaths.
They need to hurry down to their local health dept. and get their Hurricane vaccine!
At least they’ll be fully vaccinated!
In the city of Santa Barbara, dry as a bone as of 12:25pm. I’ve memorized SD’s advice for emergencies and feel as prepped as we can be. We’re a mile from the beach. I don’t feel alarmed- just a feeling of calm and peacefulness. There are some areas of the city that might be in bad shape as far as flooding. That probably won’t happen where I am. Will update this comment if things change.
2:41 pm-earthquake. unknown magnitude at this moment.
update: 5.0 east of Ojai
All storms should be named after politicians. I bet you can’t name a bigger destructive force.
They can alternate between Barack and Joe.
Ok, all you Californians praying for rain can stop now. Thank you, thank the Lord, but California is good.
Not saying the weather isn’t more severe in other parts of Los Angeles county (especially the mountains and foothills), but in my neck of the woods (a little south of Torrance, CA, near the coast), Hilary is turning out to be a big dud, just like its namesake.
A decent rain shower every hour or so for about 20 minutes, minimal wind. Temperature is about 75 deg F.
It is about 100% humidity though. Not used to that feeling. Everything feels wet, stair rails, desktops, floors, your skin.
Nothing really to complain about.
I’m in the San Fernando Valley and it’s just a you are experiencing. My dog LOVES it. She’s destroying my yard running around.
Wait til you get in a bed of wet feeling sheets. That is the worst part of the high humidity…..especially if the electricity is off and no ac.
Best wishes from the east!
While everyones got their mind on Hurricane Killary
EXCLUSIVE: FBI Preventing the Release of FOIA Requests Related to Seth Rich – Again
https://joehoft.com/exclusive-fbi-preventing-the-release-of-foia-requests-related-to-seth-rich-again/
Here in Orange County CA, we’re having a rainy grey Sunday, but otherwise nothing much to report… Hilary has lost her teeth!
So far, just a nice steady summer shower near the coast of Huntington Beach. Perhaps 3/4″-1″ so far
Muggy, but hey it’s nice to have the all the summer dust & pollen washed away. The taller greenery is very happy so far.
We did have very significant burn areas in the San Bernardino Mtns a couple years ago, so expect lots of flash flooding and debris flows up there. Anyone who didn’t evacuate the mtns / deserts, should shelter in place for now.
Rain picking up a bit as I type. No heavy wind yet. 1:05 PST.
I’m in the western edge of the Mojave Desert and the northern edge of Los Angeles county. The rain started a bit before 7am and has been pretty steady since. It’s 1pm and according to “experts” 🤡, the “real rain” should hit around 3pm.
We are the High Desert (hi Lorrie!), and our clay packed earth does not absorb water well, nor are our street drainage systems good so there is a lot of water on the roads, and on the freeway.
I was out on the 14 fwy and hydroplaned with my stupid low profile tires…
We have not had any real wind at all, especially for the High Desert. Our winds were far stronger this past winter. We also had a lot of rain this past winter, so people should know how to prepare for this.
In watching the “news” it’s all about fear mongering. I think they’re stoking the fear for Plandemic II. My son told me he saw people in Home Depot buying sheet plywood for their windows! Sad what people listen to and believe… as if we were ever going to get an actual hurricane here!
Thank you all for your prayers! I am thoroughly enjoying the rain and thrilled the aquifers will fill!!
I have places in the lower and upper desert. We are currently experiencing buckets of rain in the mountains and the lower desert! The winds haven’t begun to do their wild dance yet.
Buckets of rain for us, but no wind at all. My soaked flags are barely moving, an occasional breeze!
Grateful for the rain!!
The Babylon Bee has several fun takes on California’s response to Hilary: the latest is “Hilary Makes Landfall, Destroying Over 30,000 Emails”. Another gem, “Californians Hoping Hurricane Will Wash All Poop Off Sidewalks”
1:16PM in Escondido, CA. Just a lovely light rain so far. 1/2″ since morning. Much needed rain. Winds yet to arrive – projected in the next two hours. So far, it’s a nice rainy day.
I’m in central CA (Fresno) and we will not get much I’m guessing as it’s more on the Eastern side expecting some rain this evening. There were some 40 to 50 mph gusts in advance yesterday. I went out into the yard and picked up anything that could become airborne pots etc. We have water and supplies. All good at this point.
We do have Hardpan here. 2 inches down is solid clay no drainage so let’s hope rain is sparse and not all at once.
We are in the foothill area in Central CA, an area with an historic inland “lake.” We look down at that area which is now farmland. This winter right before spring we had copious amounts of rain and hail from the Sierras above us and our road carried quite a lot of that water down our hilly location. It was definitely intense!! The good news is that it gave us confidence that we had the resources to get through it. Be safe, Treepers!
TS (Teflon Steel) Hillary also moved fast through DC (District of Corruption) fast too!
“What difference does it make at this point?”
Latest report says winds are subsiding…
But Hillary still blows 🙂
Sorry, but I was informed all deaths would be categorized as suicides.
And a lot of suicides.
Hilary, you demon, you made schools close all over SoCal tomorrow! I know. I know. What difference does it make?!
