I have a story that may help you feel better about your son.
Years ago a work associate told me a story about him and his father. He said when he was in High School he thought his father was the dumbest man on earth and he fought with him over everything. His father wanted him to go to college and get a useful degree. So in the Spring of his Senior year in High School he told his father he was not going to college, instead he was going to join the Marine Corps expecting a big argument from his father. Instead his father just stared at him for a couple of minutes and then said” OK son , if that what you want to do become a Marine.” He told me he should have realized he was making a mistake right then. He graduated from High School then joined the Marines, did a tour in Nam then finished his hitch in the Marine’s and then went to college on the GI bill. His senior year of college he got married to his girl friend and after graduation went to work for a large company. After he had been working for a year his wife announced that she want to spend some time with his parents and get to know them. They had a small wedding and she had barely known his parents before the wedding. Apparently his wife and mother had been writing each other and came up with this idea. So on vacation they went to where his parents lived and spent a week with them. He told me this was the first time he had had more than a short causal conversation with his father since High School. He said he was amazed at how much the “old man” had learned while he was away.
