Exult, let them exult, the hosts of heaven,
exult, let Angel ministers of God exult,
let the trumpet of salvation
sound aloud our mighty King’s triumph!
Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her,
ablaze with light from her eternal King,
let all corners of the earth be glad,
knowing an end to gloom and darkness.
Rejoice, let Mother Church also rejoice,
arrayed with the lightning of his glory,
let this holy building shake with joy,
filled with the mighty voices of the peoples.
(Therefore, dearest friends,
standing in the awesome glory of this holy light,
invoke with me, I ask you,
the mercy of God almighty,
that he, who has been pleased to number me,
though unworthy, among the Levites,
may pour into me his light unshadowed,
that I may sing this candle’s perfect praises.)
(V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with your spirit.)
V. Lift up your hearts.
R. We lift them up to the Lord.
V. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
R. It is right and just.
It is truly right and just, with ardent love of mind and heart
and with devoted service of our voice,
to acclaim our God invisible, the almighty Father,
and Jesus Christ, our Lord, his Son, his Only Begotten.
Who for our sake paid Adam’s debt to the eternal Father,
and, pouring out his own dear Blood,
wiped clean the record of our ancient sinfulness.
These, then, are the feasts of Passover,
in which is slain the Lamb, the one true Lamb,
whose Blood anoints the doorposts of believers.
This is the night,
when once you led our forebears, Israel’s children,
from slavery in Egypt
and made them pass dry-shod through the Red Sea.
This is the night
that with a pillar of fire
banished the darkness of sin.
This is the night
that even now, throughout the world,
sets Christian believers apart from worldly vices
and from the gloom of sin,
leading them to grace
and joining them to his holy ones.
This is the night,
when Christ broke the prison-bars of death
and rose victorious from the underworld.
Our birth would have been no gain,
had we not been redeemed.
O wonder of your humble care for us!
O love, O charity beyond all telling,
to ransom a slave you gave away your Son!
O truly necessary sin of Adam,
destroyed completely by the Death of Christ!
O happy fault
that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer!
O truly blessed night,
worthy alone to know the time and hour
when Christ rose from the underworld!
This is the night
of which it is written:
The night shall be as bright as day,
dazzling is the night for me,
and full of gladness.
The sanctifying power of this night
dispels wickedness, washes faults away,
restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners,
drives out hatred, fosters concord, and brings down the mighty.
On this, your night of grace, O holy Father,
accept this candle, a solemn offering,
the work of bees and of your servants’ hands,
an evening sacrifice of praise,
this gift from your most holy Church.
But now we know the praises of this pillar,
which glowing fire ignites for God’s honor,
a fire into many flames divided,
yet never dimmed by sharing of its light,
for it is fed by melting wax,
drawn out by mother bees
to build a torch so precious.
O truly blessed night,
when things of heaven are wed to those of earth,
and divine to the human.
Therefore, O Lord,
we pray you that this candle,
hallowed to the honor of your name,
may persevere undimmed,
to overcome the darkness of this night.
Receive it as a pleasing fragrance,
and let it mingle with the lights of heaven.
May this flame be found still burning
by the Morning Star:
the one Morning Star who never sets,
Christ your Son,
who, coming back from death’s domain,
has shed his peaceful light on humanity,
and lives and reigns for ever and ever.
In his name. Amen.

“What a great thing it is that besides providing consolation, hope and meaning for so many, the Christian religion over the parade of centuries has inspired the greatest achievements of the human creative mind. The Easter weekend calls us to notice this…Of all the artistic materializations of Christ’s agony and death has there ever been a work of human hands that surpasses the unimaginably skilled execution (in a resistant medium — that of marble) of Michelangelo’s Pietà?” (Rex Murphy article “Eternally grateful for the inspiring miracle of Easter”–National Post)
Saw this at the New York World’s Fair in 1965. Thought it was “pretty”.
I was 9. See it now, and I am almost overcome. What years do to your perceptions.
Mom and Dad had me there to see as well although a bit too young to remember. I do remember when the whack job smashed it up with a hammer in the
early 70s.
Happy Easter. I was there at the 65 world’s fair. Was 15 then and have only vaguest memory of it. I also view it now as one of the great sculptures of all time.
The Lord is Risen! Alleluia! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!!
I know that my Redeemer lives!
Thank you. I don’t go to a church that uses the Exsultet, but I’m familiar so it. / Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleuia!
He is Risen indeed!
He is Risen indeed, Alleluia.
This is the night when Christians everywhere,
washed clean of sin
and freed from all defilement,
are restored to grace and grow together in holiness.
This is the night when Jesus Christ
broke the chains of death
and rose triumphant from the grave.
What good would life have been to us,
had Christ not come as our Redeemer?
Father, how wonderful your care for us!
How boundless your merciful love!
To ransom a slave
you gave away your Son.
Oh happy fault that won for us so great a redeemer!
11 years ago, a little early for today:
Christ has given us victory over death.
Praise His Holy name
I’ve never heard of the Exsultet..
Thank you Menagerie
God’s grace abounds.
Beautiful! I don’t think death is anything more that a belief. The belief makes the be lie er! Not the reverse. Though we are TAUGHT that the be lie ver had a belief. See “lie” in the word?

Tha old Easter vigil Mass is the most beautiful of the liturgical year. Happy Easter everyone!
Thank you, Menagerie.
Amen.
Blessings to all of you on this holiest of days!🙏❤️
Our Deacon chanted this amazing prayer tonight at the Easter Vigil. Christ is risen, Alleluia!
Thank you Menagerie and God’s blessing shine upon you. In the local Church I attend the Deacon processes into the dark church with the Paschal (Easter) candle and all the candles of the faithful are lit with flames originating from that one flame. He then chants the Exsultet in candle light. It truly touches the soul.
The Paschal candle is held over the Baptismal font (the womb of the Church) and dipped in 3 times while the Priest calls down the blessing of the Holy Spirit on the water. From thence those being baptized are born again into the Church.
I have the utmost respect for all my brethren of goodwill; though I invite you to come and see the Easter Vigil Mass. They say it has all the “smells and bells.” It draws upon deep tradition, beauty, and truth. It is a love song, an invitation from God through His Son Jesus to know love and serve God in this life and be happy in communion with Him forever in the next.
Know that the Lord knows YOU and loves YOU. He wants the best for you, and that in His eyes YOU MATTER.
In these difficult times Hope in the LORD. The flame of the “Jesus” candle even as it lights so many others remains undimmed.
May the Lord Jesus be with you all, may we sleep with the Angel’s and wake with the saints.
Good night
Beautifully worded, Tom.
This is the most glorious of holy days!
He has risen! 🌟
I just got home from attending the Vigil. I was not able to understand most of the words of the Exsultet so I really enjoyed listening to this — thank you!
This is one of the best parts of the Easter Vigil-all the congregation holding their candles lit from the Paschal candle, standing in the dark church while our priest sings the Exsultet. So moving and beautiful!
