I think it is a joke on Smith’s name being so generic.
I explained it yesterday, but of course there have been thousands of comments since. It’s a joke based on ‘30s gangster pictures and screwball comedies. In the old movies, when a man wants to do wrong, he adopts a generic-sounding alias, usually when knocking at a speakeasy, falsely signing a hotel register or saying when caught by the cops that his name is “John Smith”. There might be a half-dozen “John Smiths” in a row, all of whose actual names are Italian.
The joke was revived on the series “Doctor Who” after 2005. Whenever the thousand year-old time lord tries to infiltrate somewhere and is confronted by henchmen, he says he is “John Smith”.
It’s a niche joke that would most likely only be meaningful to those of us over 65 into those kinds of movies and shows. It doesn’t fully work, since the man’s name IS “John (Jack is the common alternative) Smith”.

Admittedly, this is the first time I’ve watched an address by POTUS 45 for a couple of years. That being said, I’m encouraged by his measured tone while delivering a never-ending fulisade of truth-bombs.
I can only pray he’s learned from his hiring missteps. His endorsement of Rona McRomney doesn’t fill me with optimism though. I could go on and on as per Robert Barnes and viva Frei.

Legal pundits talked about how you shouldn’t consider such things when it comes to prosecuting crimes, but the reality is that prosecutors do it all the time.
Prosecutions are routinely limited because of budgets.
When I worked in law enforcement, I arrested numerous people who were wanted by the city of New York for crimes as serious as armed robbery and I was forced to release them because the DA’s office claimed they didn’t have the funding for a transport team to drive to central New York to pick up the wanted subject.
How many such warrants will go unexecuted and how many serious investigations will not get investigated, because of the money spent on this bogus prosecution of PDJT?

In one case, for Robbery 1st Degree, they called me 2 months after I released the suspect and asked me if I still had him in custody.
They told me that it was the start of a new budget year for the DA’s office and they had just got approval to retrieve the guy.
I told them that I had nothing else to hold the guy on, so I had to let him go when they refused to come get him.
I had another guy that I caught three different times, over a two year period, who was also wanted by the NYPD.
They refused to come get him all three times.
I told them that, if they weren’t going to come get him, they should just take the warrant out of the computer and quit wasting everyone else’s time.
