Starting teacher salary in HISD is $55,000 a year plus full benefits/insurance. That’s for teaching 8 months out of a year! Teachers are overpaid, especially considering their performance.
Hmmm in WA,teachers (some start at $35k-45k) are paid for 180 days of teaching spread out over 12 months. No paid vacations or paid holidays just 180 days over 12 months. How would you like to be working with 30 students personalities for 180 days. Frequently those 30 students are different every hour. Behavior problems, sexual problems, sickness exposure not for me but maybe for you. Steady work because not many will do public schools. Administrators (usually double+ teacher salaries) get paid vacation and work 12 months.
All teachers need to move to NYS. The salaries and benefits negotiated by the unions there are off the charts. Benefits are huge. Top salaries over $100,000 in some places for the most senior teachers. We are talking K-12. It’s a major profession in NY and they are handsomely paid in certain counties. Now you know one of the main reasons why taxes are off the charts in NY.
oh, forgot to report that the kids reading and math scores are awful. Paying teachers more is not always productive.
NYC teachers receive a guaranteed 7 percent return on their tax deferred accounts (principals get 8 percent) , they pay no city or NYS tax on their required distributions nor do they pay city or state tax on their pensions.
Their health insurance is fully paid in retirement, they receive reimbursement for all their Medicare premiums including IRMMA premiums and this includes their spouses who are under their retirement health plan! Their union reimburse them for their extended coverage.

School teachers from my old stomping ground, Long Island, were offered a choice of getting their yearly pay spread out over 52 weeks a year or over the school year ending up with the exact same yearly pay. Teachers play stupid games by trying to pretend they aren’t being paid for the time school isn’t in session.
Well, guess what? I don’t get paid for hours when I am not actually working so by your logic, I guess out of 8,760 hours in a year (24 x 365=8,760) the actual time I’m paid for (40 hrs/wk x 50 weeks/yr = 2,000 hrs) means I’m not being paid for 9 months.
Only a school teacher working with the whole summer off and a week and a half off at Christmas and a week and a half off during the spring break would boohoo over NOT getting a “paid vacation”. For the rest of us, a “paid vacation” means we are being paid the same whether we are physically present or on vacation. We AREN’T being paid our agreed upon wage or salary and then on top of it all, being paid EXTRA because we are on vacation.
Most working people, let’s say, work all year with a paid 2 week vacation. What that means is that they still receive a paycheck even though they are absent from their job for those 2 weeks. Does it make a difference if they actually receive a paycheck for those 2 weeks or if those 2 weeks of vacation pay were spread out and evenly deposited in the other 50 paychecks? You are still being paid the exact same TOTAL amount either way.
I’m sorry! Maybe you are FORCED to teach school or didn’t know what the hours and job conditions were before you took the job and weren’t allowed to quit.
