[Transcript] – FORMER GOVERNOR LARRY HOGAN: I was struggling, because my heart was telling me to run. My head was telling me, no, that just does not make sense for a whole host of reasons. And my gut was flipping back and forth. So it really came down to, if I wasn’t 100 percent convinced, then I shouldn’t do it.

ROBERT COSTA: Toughest decision of your political career?
FORMER GOVERNOR LARRY HOGAN: Absolutely, toughest decision I ever made.
ROBERT COSTA: Politically, by staying out of the race, it’s a smaller field, may be tougher for Trump to get the nomination?
FORMER GOVERNOR LARRY HOGAN: I didn’t want to have a pileup of a bunch of people fighting. Right now, you have Trump and DeSantis at the top of the field soaking up all the oxygen, getting all the attention, and then a whole lot of the rest of us in single digits. And the more of them you have, the less chance you have for somebody rising up.

Hogan turned into a democrat.
He was a moderate Republican in a deep blue state (MD). You are not going to get much better than him or Bob Ehrlich for Governor, around here. He did provide the valuable service of knocking out Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, his Democrat opponent for his first term. He did govern pretty well in conjunction with a centrist Democrat Comptroller Peter Franchot, who could not get out of his own Democrat primary to run for Governor, this election cycle. The state is that far gone. But don’t worry: Virginia (which was red when we moved here 25 years ago) may take the lead in insanity.
That said, he doesn’t have what it takes to be a national leader, because he would have to be more right-wing than he is to fit the electorate and do what needs to be done. He could never win the Republican primary coming from where he has been.
He could have just done his job and made non-committal remarks about Trump instead of going out of his way to piss on him, which was done to polish his credentials for the national political commentariat. He ticked off more than a few of his Republican base in MD, which are pretty conservative on the Eastern Shore and western panhandle. They would be quite happy to secede and join West Virginia.
But he was never going to be more than a single digits kind of guy. He probably would not have carried Maryland in the general election, for that matter.

It was funny when the SCOTUS ruled against “good and substantial reason” for concealed carry permits he grudgingly acknowledged he had to obey the law and let anyone get a permit. That was fun to see people paste his quotes in the box asking why you had a good and substantial reason to get a permit. LOL.

Maryland legislature is controlled by Baltimore and DC suburban democrats. When Hogan was elected, he was looked at as a counterweight to the tax and spend legislature. However, it became immediately evident that he was a RINO who wanted to play nice with the dems. When the Federal income tax was overhauled under Trump to increase the standard deduction, the Maryland legislature refused to change its tax code to align with the Federal. All they did was increase the personal exemption by a puny $500. Thus Maryland taxed my Federal tax savings by over 50%. Excuse by Hogan and the weak-kneed Republican legislators claimed that they would ‘fix’ the problem in the next legislative session. Never happened. I see the ‘fix’ is still held up in committee in 2023. Hogan should have vetoed the whole budget due to the blatant pot of money grab by the state, forcing the dems to own it. Instead, Hogan joined the gang of money grabbers.
Moved to West Virginia in 2019. No disappointment from me on Hogan not running.
To be (slightly) fair, with the Two Mikes in the legislature controlling things, we were never going to get anything done. At least he didn’t run around promoting transgender rights or some such. LOL.
