Apparently these balloons can not only drop probes and deploy drones, they can also deploy a tactical nuclear bomb or EMP weapon. Those balloons are too low for any decent EMP footprint. I calculated the visible horizon for a nucdet at 80K feet,and it was 347 miles (radius,I think),so not a very big ground area for EMP. Essentially a point-source of EMP.
Any credible nuclear EMP is going to happen 200-250 miles out,up in space. that makes it possible for ONE 20 KT bomb to EMP most of the lower 48. (Wiki has a nice NEMP page,with a coverage MAP.)

A lot about this doesn’t add up. Especially the military operation. The DoD claims that they flew our best dogfighting jet to shoot a heat-seeking Sidewinder missile to splash a non-maneuvering craft that doesn’t dogfight or emit heat? Seriously?

They wanted to bring the balloon down fast while it was still within our 12 nautical mile territory.
Past history has shown that even with a lot of holes in it this type of balloon would normally take a long time to come down, even days. This brought it down instantly and the debris is fully within U.S. territory, thankfully in under 50 ft of water.

EMP in atmosphere at high altitude is limited to the visual horizon. a serious EMP will be detonated 200-250 miles out in space. a low altitude (below 20K ft.) nucdet’s EMP is about the same as it’s blast and thermal radius,due to the Compton Effect. the air’s too dense at lower altitudes,it soaks up the fast radiation before it gets wide.
the bad part is that US missile defenses are oriented towards warheads reentering or in mid-course,not anything headed out to 200-250 miles,near the orbit of the ISS. Also, our BMD response would not be quick enough before the warhead detonates in space.

Here is a possibility – electromagnetic radio frequencies that a satellite couldn’t capture because of distance.
If you are interested in taking pictures then a satellite can do as well as or better than a balloon. That’s why this balloon wasn’t interested in pictures. It was collecting radio frequency electromagnetic energy. Messages. Frequencies of radar installations.
For that kind of intelligence collection, being closer to the source that’s emitting the energy is very important. A balloon flies maybe 12 miles above the ground; a satellite flies 100 miles above the ground or more.
You could probably capture EM and radio emissions from a car on the county road. You can fly light planes over that country. Malstrom Air Force base is within few miles of a commercial airport.

This is <b>not</b> the first time a Chinese balloon has drifted through our air space; this balloon was first spotted entering our air space over the Aleutian Islands about a week or so ago. For some unknown reason, it wasn’t shot down then as it wobbled over the seas between Islands.
We weren’t informed of its presence then nor when it was spotted entering Alaska air space. The only reason it was announced publicly was due to a sharp eyed Gazette newspaper in Montana. As an infamous Democrat operative once said, ‘never let a crisis go to waste’ so our government decided to create a crisis and to use that crises to lambaste China.
As we used the corrupt Ukraine government as in excuse to weaken Russia with our lamebrained sanctions, we’re now preparing our citizens to support another lamebrained attack on China. Biden is going to end his term as President having failed at three military adventures: Afghanistan, Russia and China. Afghanistan came away with $8 billion dollars of munitions; Russia has increased their market for oil in Asia and the global south and the US has come away with $50 to $80 billion dollars in weapon sales.
The big losers in the Russian fiasco were Ukraine and Europe and if we push hard enough on China, Taiwan will be the biggest immediate loser, with the US bringing up the rear with our loss of the petrodollar and a big chunk of global banking.
Keep in mind, there are an untold number of spy satellites roaming through our air space hourly. ‘They’ say that the balloon technology is better than the satellite technology, but how much better? The spy satellites can count the number of people standing on a street corner, can the balloon count the buttons on their clothing? Oh, but the balloons can maneuver ‘they’ say; yeah, it can change directions but it can’t make the wind blow where it needs it to go.
All the other balloons were no big deal and neither was this balloon until it was spotted by a civilian in Montana. None of the other balloons were even remarked upon let alone shot down.
