In a way, I think this may have been a good thing considering there were no other repubs that came forward saying they wanted the speaker. With a slim majority, the conservatives were able to demand changes.

What I found most interesting about the whole thing, which btw gives more evidence of SD’s revelations of the ‘Fourth Branch‘s’ power and power of the administrative state, is that Gallagher wanted to go into a SCIF and talk to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs to discuss the threat to National security and was prevented because he didn’t have the proper or high enough ‘clearance.’
I cannot see how legally and constitutionally a bureaucrat can dictate to an elected member of Congress from having access to talk to the Chairman in a secure facility.
