When the republican Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives publicly supports a legislative change that would permit the republican Governor to run for the GOP nomination, it doesn’t happen without prior discussion.
FLORIDA – Top Republicans in the Florida legislature said Tuesday that they’d be willing to change state election law so that Gov. Ron DeSantis could run for president without resigning from his current job.
“I think that’s a great idea,” Florida House Speaker Paul Renner said in a press conference with reporters at the state capitol, when asked about potential changes to the state’s so-called “resign to run” election law in the forthcoming legislative session. “I think we’ll look at that.”
Senate President Kathleen Passidomo echoed Renner’s comments, saying it would be an “honor” to have someone from Florida running for president. She agreed with Renner it would be a “good idea” to change the law. “I think he should be allowed to do it,” she said.
Under current Florida law, if DeSantis were to run for president then he would have to resign his post as governor — even if he eventually lost the presidency. Candidates have 10 days to resign after they qualify for federal office, but how exactly that is defined when it comes to the presidency isn’t clear and has been open to different interpretations, according to The Miami Herald.
[…] DeSantis hasn’t tried to tamp down speculation that he might seek a White House bid, and hasn’t committed to serving out all four years as governor. (read more)
This legislation should be DOA and any member who supports it must be primaried.
If DeSantis runs against President Trump I will no longer support him. He has stated that he is running for FL governor and that his attention would be there. If he becomes a tool for the establishment consider me out of the race.
Get with the fact that your governor is deep in the deep state.
If Florida Republicans do this, they are really foolish. And just as devious as Democrats. It will lose Republicans the election, and probably lose them Florida also. Being Democrat light, and pulling those kinds of tricks, is not what Republican voters are looking for. DeSantis will lose if he does that. And there will be a knock on effect in the Senate and House for some time to come. He does have a future as President if he continues his current path, and doesn’t dump Florida in such a cavalier way. By 28 and 32 his record will be much better established and he will be unbeatable.
Unbeatable? Taking corporate “never Trump” money should disqualify him from any support by any conservative. I don’t think I understand why anyone would support him when he’s made his allegiance clear. To my mind he has no future as president and we’re lucky to see him for what he is this early.
Precisely !
AND, anyone who refuses to arrive at your deduction has zero powers of discernment and is devoid of critical thinking skills which are necessary to remain “in willful denial” prolonging Battered Conservative Syndrome.
It’s also why we lose and why the swamp believes the electorate is stupid. Because they are.
Good governors don’t always make good presidential candidates. See Jeb!
Without the support of independents the republican party is dead in Florida. They need to tread more lightly than they have been.
There are now 300,000 plus Republicans more than Democrats in the state.
The whole thing seems rather Lulaesque to me.

IF they can do this, why not change their laws to allow him to run for VP instead?
The whole thing smells and opens up Florida to having all of their Governors running for another position while supposedly putting Floridians 1st.
You need a #FloridiansFirst movement. 😉
We must also remember, there are a lot of people in Florida who want Amnesty for Illegals, and they almost got it courtesy of the Paul Ryan assist. It’s time for us to remind ourselves exactly who they are.

When, not if, our legislature changes the resign-to-run law , Desantis will declare his run.
If that’s not bad enough, our very liberal Ag Commish, who has been bought and paid for over and over again, Wilton Simpson will announce his run for governor. Simpson wrote our red flag laws, pushed for publicly funded abortifacients, and as senate president, placed three radical democrats in charge of key senate committees.
At a time when we didn’t need a single democrat to actually bring about ‘conservative’ laws, Desanstis and Simpson blocked most of those attempts and ran our most conservative politicians out of public office (Sabatini and Mike Hill).
This law was put in place for a reason. The reason is still valid. Don’t do it Republicans.
“30 pieces of silver DeSantis”
I’m thinking that the huge amounts of proven voter fraud discovered by Florida patriots – and shown with proof to deSantis, who ignored it all – was used to gilve him his “huge red margins’ needed to kick off a run for POTUS
The picture is missing Liz Cheney, and Megan McCain.
