Very few Americans understand how such a thing would likely play out. There are probably no more that 1-2% of Americans who are actually trained and experienced in close quarters ground combat, especially among the younger vets where the military logistical and non-ground combat specialties outnumber the infantry/spec ops vets by several orders of magnitude. Sadly, Americans as a people are now just about the polar opposite of our ancestors the “Minutemen.” The qualities that made them “patriots” as you describe them, most importantly “virtue,” are simply unknown to the average American, accustomed to all the luxuries and “pleasures” of our spoiled post-modern lifestyles.
While I know of many who call themselves “patriots” and even have vast arsenals and ammo that they often brag about, they do not have any real training or experience in hardship and killing humans and are, to put it mildly, “soft” in every way that is important for an infantryman—physically, mentally and morally. As such, I would not count on them to stay and fight when the heads of those around them are exploding in red mist.
I practiced the craft of close combat for 33 years in the Marines (of old—not the new model) and just do not see many Minutemen out there.

Every time some politician starts braying about “assault weapons,” it makes me think about WHY they want to disarm all of us in such a specific way. It doesn’t have anything to do with crime.
