For many people Salman Rushdie is perhaps the most well-known free speech defender in the current generation. He certainly is one of the bravest people who originally spoke out against Islamic extremism with his 1988 book Satanic Verses.
Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death over what he claimed were blasphemous references to Islam. A $3 million bounty was placed on his head for anyone who kills him. The fatwa was never rescinded, and Rushdie spent well over a decade hiding under protective custody.
In recent years Rushdie has been a visible advocate for free speech and has given multiple speeches on issues around the need for freedom of expression. During a speech yesterday he was attacked and stabbed multiple times.
[New York] – Author Salman Rushdie is likely to lose one of his eyes and is currently on a ventilator after he was attacked on stage at a literary event in upstate New York on Friday, a report said.
“The news is not good,” the 75-year-old writer’s agent, Andrew Wylie, told The New York Times. “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged,” said Wylie.
Rushdie, who is still unable to speak, was attacked by a lone man while speaking at an event at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY, about 55 miles south of Buffalo.
He was scheduled to speak about the United States as a place for exiled authors “as a home for freedom of expression,” according to the institute. After the stabbing, he was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he underwent surgery.

Clearly, you are not on the literary circuit. He has been on book tours quite a bit, with the recent Quichotte, as a poster mentioned below. He did not have security at these events & appeared like any other author, meeting with high school student writers before events & signing afterward. Gloria Steinem had more security at her book signing than Rushdie. If there were no threats recently, then this attack is quite out of the blue.
I doubt anyone notified the local police Rushdie would be in town. The book was published about 35 years ago.

It shocked the world when Iran ordered a hit on Salman Rushdie just because he had written a book “The Satanic Verses” and the author had to go in hiding. It showed the world how insane and evil these people are.
Flash forward to 2022 and is anyone surprised at the attack on this author? We see these types of attacks all the time now. It illustrates how these Islamic Extremists have gained access to widespread areas of the world to murder and maim those who don’t ascribe to their sick religious views. We can thank Obama for giving them a life spring with secret plane loads of unmarked cash and now Biden for arming them with $85 Billion in advanced weaponry that he arranged to donate to them in the manner he chose to withdraw from Afghanistan. God knows what will happen next in our country as the FBI has admitted there have been over 200 people on the terrorist watch list in Afghanistan that Biden brought to the US with the evacuees. Note Biden left behind Americans and many of our allies, condemning them to death and torture at the hands of the terrorists, but he brought these terrorists out of there to come into our country. How many additional terrorists are sauntering across our southern border right now as we speak? But don’t worry folks. I’m sure the FBI is on it and has this all under control. <gagging> Likely they are in the process of recruiting them.
Instead of spending time hunting down ‘White Supremacists’ the real question is why the FBI does nothing about the islamic terrorists roaming around the US. BTW, I read one book by Salman Rushdie, Quichotte, inspired by Don Quixote but I could only read less than a hundred pages and returned the book to the library. The main character is arrogant and doesn’t like conservative American values. IMHO he is a mediocre novelist.
Yes, I felt Quichotte was a critique of the US. He chose the form of the novel for a reason. Now, his older work is not mediocre at all.

I happened to catch a snippet about this on NPR (not by choice). They said something like the motive is unknown. I had to laugh.

It seems European S American and most non Muslim countries are quite horrified at the attack. And for once not blaming the USA. Good the assailant didn’t use a gun but a knife. So we don’t have to listen to a lot of scolding it’s the fault of the gun.
